  • Inside the Secret World of the Geisha
2019 Spring Semester Inside the Secret World of the Geisha Section 1 Instructor/Title Professor Arif Iqball 【Course Outline / Description】 Painted by Picasso, sculpted by Rodin, entertainers to Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, and US Presidents, yet the role and image of the Japanese Geisha has often been misinterpreted outside Japan, and has shaped Western stereotypes about Japan and Japanese women. Being historically closed in a world of secrecy, not many Japanese either have been able to get access to this world with its own rules and etiquette, and with very little documentation. This course examines the primary role of the Geisha in Japan as an artist and an entertainer encompassing a variety of important social, cultural, and historical elements. Leveraging the instructor’s personal connections and research, a field trip to a seasonal dance performance, and conversations with current Geisha, as well as use of academic literature and visual documentation including historical photographs, documentaries and movie representations, this course attempts to provide a complete cultural experience to the Asian and Japanese Studies student on the true role and place of these artists in Japanese culture, and in a traditional world which runs parallel (and yet is completely different than) to the modern Japanese world of manga, anime, and robots. With emphasis on the Geisha of the five Kagai (performance districts) in Kyoto, this course not only explores the historical and cultural elements, but also introduces this relatively unknown and closed

  • Hdounderstandingbalancing Seminar
Dr. E.M. Richmond-Garza Parlin 119, 512-232-5708 [email protected] Understanding and Balancing Motivations Focus: Ethics and Leadership 16 September 2016 Overview: Literature, especially performance, provides concrete and practical cases that help us to understand how ethical decisions are made and to see how ethics and leadership intersect. This professional seminar will use performance texts and approaches to question the nature of the ethical challenges we face in today’s diverse and dynamic workplace. We will focus on competing motivations, using methods and cases studies with practical applications. We will investigate examples, both artistic and actual, presented in a multimedia environment. These cases allow us to recognize and understand varied and competing identities and motivations. We will explore how to achieve balance so as to ensure successful management in the modern workplace. We will develop strategies for asking ourselves productive questions which lead to positive outcomes for conflicted situations in which competing ethical and personal agendas might otherwise lead to negative, or even tragic, consequences. The goal is to develop attentiveness to those patterns of motivational conflict, which might jeopardize the health and productivity of the organization and/or community in question, and to experiment with approaches for managing them. Hands-on experience with analyzing fictional conflicts will allows us to develop our own strategies for responding to real-life tensions and pressures in a self-aware and constructive manner. Exercises will involve applying Stanislavski’s system and developing ways of defining and negotiating competing motivations and ethics, while remaining aware of the subject position of each of us in the process.

Master’s thesis, 84 pages. Appendix, 2 pages. Cultural history May 2019 Summary The subject of my master’s thesis is the depiction of everyday life in the post-war films of Japanese filmmaker Ozu Yasujirô (1903-1963). My primary sources are his three first post- war films: Record of a Tenement Gentleman (Nagaya shinshiroku, 1947), A Hen in the Wind (Kaze no naka no mendori, 1948) and Late Spring (Banshun, 1949). Ozu’s aim in his filmmaking was to depict the Japanese people, their society and their lives in a realistic fashion. My thesis offers a close reading of these films that focuses on the themes that are central in their everyday depiction. These themes include gender roles, poverty, children, nostalgia for the pre-war years, marital equality and the concept of arranged marriage, parenthood, and cultural juxtaposition between Japanese and American influences. The films were made under American censorship and I reflect upon this context while examining the presentation of the themes.

Wilson, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2015 During the mid-1950s to the early 1970s a subversive cinema, known as the Japanese New Wave, arose in Japan. This dissertation challenges critical trends that use French New Wave cinema and the oeuvre of Oshima Nagisa as templates to construct Japanese New Wave cinema as largely male-centered and avant-garde in its formal aesthetics. I argue instead for the centrality of the erotic woman to a questioning of national and postwar identity in Japan, and for the importance of popular cinema to an understanding of this New Wave movement. In short, this study aims to break new ground in Japanese New Wave scholarship by focusing on issues of gender and popular aesthetics.

Over time, Japanese New Wave Cinema has come to occupy a central position within the narrative history of Japanese film studies. This position has helped introduce many significant films while inadvertently ostracizing or ignoring the much broader landscape of film at this time. This thesis seeks to complexify the New Wave’s central position through the career of Daiei Studios’ director, Masumura Yasuzo.
