Zur Person 3,4, 38, 39, 50 Abergläubisches Treiben, Selbsttraumatisierung, intellektuelles Ausklinken, Gruselsucht im gedankenlos- gefahrfreien Raum aufgeklärter Absicherung, der Hypnose oder den Drogen verdankte Fiugimaginationen, wollüstig provozierende Exzentrik, dümmlicher Mummenschanz, viel Ernsthaftigkeit neben halbseidenem Schnickschnack - all diese Momente (und einige mehr) formieren das Hexenbild und die Hexenpositur unserer Tage, die als einheitlich und eindeutig zu bezeichnen mehr als naiv wäre. Hexe ist nicht gleich Hexe: die Skala reicht von der dumpf erlittenen Selbstquälerei bis zur kichernd-glitzernden Schickeria; begleitet von einem Wortgebrauch, der nur noch vagen Kitzel verspürt, und überzuckert von allerhand appetitlichen Hexlein, die auf ihren Kosenamen kommoder reiten als auf den weiland Besen. Bereits in vorchristlicher Zeit scheint man den Zauber und vor allem den Zaubernden selbst - der in den meisten Fällen eine Frau war - trotz seiner Nützlichkeit mit einem gewissen Argwohn betrachtet zu haben. Sicher war es schon immer eine Tatsache, daß magische Praktiken sowohl zu guten als auch zu bösen Zwecken eingesetzt werden konnten. Tatsache ist aber auch, daß gerade die in geheimen Künsten besonders bewanderten Frauen ihren männlichen Zeitgenossen offenbar besonders unheimlich waren. Aber schon in der römischen Kaiserzeit überwiegt bereits die Furcht, die in den ,sagae' (Wahrsagerinnen), die .strigae' (eulenhafte Vögel), .veneficae' (Giftmischerinnen) und ,malae mulieres' meist eindeutig Schadenzauber treibende böse Frauen sieht. Zunehmend erhalten die Großen Göttinnen negative Züge; die ihnen heiligen Tiere - zu denen vor allem Eule und Katze gehören - wandeln sich zum Hexenattribut. So wurden die alten Gottheiten zwar degradiert, aber doch nicht aus dem Bewußtsein der Menschheit vertrieben; auch als Herrscherinnen der Finsternis waren sie noch immer Zeichen für die Macht des Weiblichen, das auf magische Weise mit den Kräften der Natur in Verbindung zu stehen scheint. Uralte Vorstellungen von der Großen Mutter, alter Erdmutterglaube, wonach die Priesterinnen der Magna Mater ihren Zauber auf Grund einer magischen Erdverbundenheit ausübten und in Vegetationskulturen die mantisch-magischen Funktionen der Erdmutter übernehmen, sind für die Gestalt der späteren Hexe entscheidend wirksam geworden. Die alten Vorstellungen von weiblichen Unholden und Zauberern haben Jahrhunderte überlebt - noch heute verbindet sich mit dem Wort Hexe das Bild einer durch Zauber Schaden stiftenden Frau; die Bezeichnungen Hexer und Hexenmeister sind etymologische Analogiebildungen zu dem zugrundeliegenden Wort ,Hexe', womit immer eine weibliche Person gemeint ist. Männlichen Zauberkundigen wird zudem meist günstiges Wirken zugeschrieben: wenn sie auftreten, dann nur in den seltensten Fällen als Schädiger, sondern mehr als Weise und Gelehrte, deren Kunst gerade darin besteht, schädigende weibliche Hexen abzuwehren. Das Wort „Hexe" findet sich im deutschen Sprachraum erst relativ spät. Die älteste Bezeichnung in Glossen des 9. und 10. Jh. ist .hagazussa' (Zaunweib) und meint wahrscheinlich ein dämonisches Wesen, das in den Bereich des Menschen einzudringen und über den Zaun zu klettern versucht, der Haus und Hof vom Wirkungsbereich der bösen Geister trennt. In mittelhochdeutscher Zeit ist der Begriff selten; erst im 16. Jh. drang ,Hexe' von der Schweiz her endgültig vor, verdrängte im Deutschen andere Zauberer- und Dämonennamen und faßte als Sammelbegriff sehr komplexe Erscheinungen zusammen. Frühmittelalterliche Schriftquellen verwenden hauptsächlich lateinische Bezeichnungen wie Jamia' (blutgieriger Dämon), .malefica' (boshafte Frau), ,venefice' und .herbaria' (Kräuterfrau), die magische Einzelpraktiken charakterisieren und damit der Wirklichkeit wohl sehr viel näher kamen. Nach einer Umfrage des Instituts für Demoskopie Allensbach vom Jahr 1973 glaubt in der Bundesrepublik fast jeder zehnte, daß es „Hexen vielleicht doch gibt"; Berichte über die kriminellen Folgen gegenwärtigen Hexenglaubens füllen immer wieder die Spalten der Zeitungen. Nicht nur in Amerika wuchern Satanssekten, finden Hexenkonvente, Schwarze Messen und spiritistische Sitzungen statt. Die Idee vom Teufelspakt basiert auf der Vorstellung einer Möglichkeit von Verträgen mit der Geisterwelt, deren Motive teils materiellen, teils ideeller Natur sind. Die gesteigerte religiöse Aufregung des Spätmittelalters, die weitgehend auf den Teufelsglauben fixiert war, kam auch in Zusammenhang mit dem allmählich einsetzenden Umbruch auf wissenschaftlichem Gebiet zum Ausdruck. Mit den Anfängen des Humanismus begann die Wissenschaft sich endgültig von der Theologie zu lösen; damit trat das Motiv der wissenschaftlichen Neugier als Grund für das Erlernen „magischer Künste" in den Vordergrund. Der Teufelspakt wurde zur willkommenen Möglichkeit, tiefere, dem Menschen sonst nicht zugängliche Einsicht in die Naturvorgänge zu erlangen - selbst wenn der Betreffende dafür auf sein Seelenheil verzichten mußte. Anfällig für einen solchen Pakt war zunächst nur der Gelehrte, der aus der Einheit des scholastischen Erkenntnisdogmas heraustrat und sich damit der Ketzerei verdächtig machte. Alle weltliche Forschung hat anfangs unter diesem Vorzeichen des schlechten 1 Gewissens gestanden; fast alle großen Gelehrten der Übergangszeit gerieten in den Ruf, Magier und Zauberer zu sein. Viele der von Heilern angewandten Mittel und Methoden gehören jedoch zu den bewährten Beständen schon der frühen Arzneiwissenschaft; oft liegen ihnen uraltes, wohlerprobtes Wissen um die heilenden Kräfte der Natur, gediegenes empirisches Können sowie eine ausgezeichnete Beobachtungsgabe und Menschenkenntnis zugrunde. Der Streit um die Frage, was unter heilkundlicher Tätigkeit, unter „un"- und „außerwissenschaftlichen" Heilmethoden eigentlich zu verstehen sei, ist schon alt und bis heute nicht entschieden. Bereits im späten Mittelalter gab es neben einer zahlenmäßig sehr geringen und entsprechend teuren Ärzteschaft mit Universitätsausbildung ein Subsystem halbprofessioneller oder auch nur interessierter Laien, die die medizinische Versorgung der breiten Volksmassen übernahmen und mit ihrer Kenntnis natürlicher pflanzlicher Mittel und unter Zuhilfenahme des gesunden Menschenverstandes, garniert mit allerlei Zauberformeln, eine Art vorwissenschaftlicher Heilkunst betrieben. Zu ihnen gehörten etwa Barbiere, Wundärzte, Bader und Apotheker, außerdem Schäfer, Zigeuner und vor allem die .Weisen Frauen', deren Nachfolgerinnen auch in Deutschland noch heute zu finden sind, vor allem in ländlichen Gebieten. Als Ärzte ohne Titel haben sie jahrhundertelang manches praktisches Wissen weitergegeben - selbst Paracelsus sagte von sich, er habe von Quacksalbern, Kurpfuschern, Scharfrichtern und alten Weibern manches Gute und Nützliche gelernt. Teils ins Mythische überhöht, steht die Gestalt der heilkundigen Frau schon in der Frühzeit der Medizin im Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Die keltische Göttin Cerridwen, die in ihrem Zauberkessel magische Pflanzen kocht, ist insofern bereits der Prototyp der späteren Kräuterhexe. Die griechische Hekate ist Patronin der Zauberinnen; von ihr hat Medea die Kenntnnis der Gifte und Zauberkräuter erlernt, und noch in der berühmten Hexenküchen-Szene in Shakespeares Macbeth tritt sie als Herrin der Hexen auf, die auf magische Weise mit den Kräften der Natur in Verbindung stehen. In der ausgehenden Antike gab es zahlreiche heil- und kräuterkundige Frauen, die sich auch auf Giftmischerei und Magie verstanden. Ihr Bereich war vor allem die Frauenheilkunde: als Geburtshelferinnen nahm man sie ebenso in Anspruch wie zu Abtreibungen sowie zur Bereitung von Verhütungsmitteln und Liebestränken. In der antiken Dichtung und dann auch im beginnenden Mittelalter werden diese Frauen bereits als Zauberinnen bezeichnet und mit entsprechendem Argwohn betrachtet, wenn sie auch noch nicht als Teufelsbündnerinnen gelten. Die germanische Literatur kennt ebenfalls Weise Frauen, die sich mit Heilkunst befassen. In spätmittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Quellen zum Hexenwesen ist nicht selten auch von einem positiven Wirken der Hexe die Rede: sie kann nicht nur schaden, sondern auch heilen, freilich nicht mit Hilfe der anerkannten Medizin und vor allem - nach Ansicht der mittelalterlichen Theologie, die in Krankheiten eine Strafe für begangene Sünden sah und sie deshalb
