ESSAYS Modern Architecture in Thailand BY PONGKWAN LASSUS The influence of modern architecture became more visible in Thailand after the country shifted from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy in 1932 and also as a result of economic circumstances and world trends. The first generation of Thai Modernist architects (or the pioneers of modern architecture in Thailand) had their education in Europe because of the necessity to modernize Thailand. The second gener- ation were Thai architects who received their architectural education in Thailand as well as some continuing their studies in the USA. Their works reflect the International Style with a concern for a tropical architecture vocabulary and local material utilization based on economics. As the architectural profession was declared a protected profession in 1965 for Thai architects only, there was very little modern architecture in Thailand designed by foreign architects. Introduction: the Pre-Modernism Western During the reign of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI, 1880-1925; Architecture in Thailand (1851-1917) reign: 1910-1925), there was an economic recession in Siam. Architecture in the Kingdom of Siam (former name of The first university in Siam was established in 1916. Construction of influences during the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV, 1851- luxury Western architecture in this period slowed down 1868). All neighboring countries were colonized by either and changed from grand symmetric planning into a more Great Britain or France. In 1955, King Mongkut (1804-1868) asymmetric floor plan.

Abdülhamid döneminde İstanbul’a gelen Raimondo D’Aronco’dur. D’Aronco 1893 yılında II. Abdülhamid’in düzenlemeyi plan- ladığı Dersaadet Ziraat ve Sanayi Sergi-i Umumisi’nin tasarım ve uygulamasını yapmak üzere İstanbul’a gelmiştir.

  • Bangkok Tourist Attractions 9 April 2018
Bangkok tourist attractions 1. Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha The Grand Palace The Grand Palace has an area of 218,400 sq. metres and is surrounded by walls built in 1782. The length of the four walls is 1,900 metres. Within these walls are situated government offices and the Chapel Royal of the Emerald Buddha besides the royal residences. When Siam restored law and order after the fall of Ayutthaya the monarch lived in Thonburi on the west side of the river. Rama I, on ascending the throne, moved the centre of administration to this side of the Chao Phraya; and, after erecting public monuments such as fortifications and monasteries, built a palace to serve not only as his residence but also his offices--the various ministries, only one of which remains in the palace walls. This palace came to be known as the Grand Palace, in which the earliest edifices contemporary with the foundation of Bangkok were the two groups of residences named the Dusit Maha Prasat and the Phra Maha Monthian. The Chapel Royal of The Emerald Buddha Just north of the Royal Residence of the Maha Monthian from which there is a connecting gate lies The Chapel Royal of The Emerald Buddha. It consists of all the architectural features of the monastery without however the residential quarter, for monks do not live here. The Assembly Hall, or Ubosoth, serves as the monarch's private chapel. Hence the partition on either side of the main altar intended as a retiring room, which is never to be found anywhere else but the only other chapel royal, that of the King of Thonburi, which serves now as the Assembly Hall of the monastery of Arun within the former grounds of the palace of that king.

Mäkelä ABSTRACT Modern architecture is a creation of the West. In a non-Western context, it normally reflects a direct intervention of Western powers through colonization. Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is an exception. Thai people have argued that they adopted and assimilated modern architecture into their unique cultural tradition without being physically colonized. The shift toward Western culture and Modernity is evident in 19th and 20th century Thai architecture, particularly in the capitol city of Bangkok. Major public buildings signify the country’s domestic political circumstances, its Westernization and Modernization processes, in addition to the discourse of colonialism and anti- colonialism.
