  • In Kenyan Athletics
EVERY MEDAL HAS TWO SIDES ‘EVERY MEDAL HAS TWO SIDES’ Modernization, Dependency and the role of ‘the West’ in Kenyan athletics Master’s Thesis Human Geography Luuk van den Boogaard s0142379 Supervisor: Ton van Naerssen 30 September 2007 __________________________________________________________________________1 _ EVERY MEDAL HAS TWO SIDES Abstract In this thesis the author wants to give an answer to the question ‘What’s the role of ‘the West’ on Kenyan athletics?’. In order to accomplish this, the author conducts his research at the level of Kenya’s national culture, the national athletic system, and the individual athlete. Three concepts, which he derives from theories, described in the theoretical framework, are applied to the different levels of research. The three concepts are the transition-concept, the growth-concept (based on modernization theory) and the empowerment-concept (based on dependency-theory). In the empirical part of the thesis these three concepts are tested in the case of Kenyan athletics. On the level of Kenya’s national culture it becomes clear that the introduction of athletics by the British colonizer led to the replacement of Kenya’s indigenous movement culture. The author concludes, though, that the athletic culture is not full-grown in Kenya. Dependency theorists criticise ‘Western imperialising powers’, trying to colonise the world with more and more adherents to participation in athletics. The disappointing result is that Kenyan athletics is only growing in long distance running. In relation to Kenya’s athletic culture some ‘empowerment’ strategies are described. On the level of the national athletic system in Kenya, the author concludes that a modern sports system has been established, but it’s malfunctioning.

Acknowledging concerns expressed by some sociologists of sport about the role of celebrity athletes in the sport for development and peace movement, we suggest that in the particular contexts we studied, high-profile athletes played a crucial role in the organization of reconciliation events. Informed by interviews with former and current elite Kenyan runners and others involved in the organization of these events, we argue that the apparent effectiveness of the athletes in mobilizing resources, pursuing political opportunities and devising a collective action frame was possible because of the extant positioning of the athletes in the impacted communities, the active involvement in and personal investment of the athletes in the outcome of the peace-promoting activities, and the unique pre-Olympic moment in which the events took place.

  • Contribution of Sport Towards National Development
CONTRIBUTIONS OF SPORTS TOWARDS NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN KENYA BY ANDANJE MWISUKHA, NJORORAI, W.W.S. AND - ONYWERA VINCENT KENYATTA UNIVERSITY PHYSICAL & HEALTH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT P.O. BOX 43844 NAIROBI, KENYA. ABSTRACT After the attainment of independence from colonial rule in 1963, the priority issues on which the post-colonial Kenya Government focused its attention was eradication of poverty, improvement of healthcare facilities and expansion of education. National development plans in thefirst decade therefore addressed these three main issues. At that time, sport did not feature as a facet to development. Though people participated in sports, this was to a less extent and was generally regarded as pastime activity. In addition, sports were regarded as an activityfor children in schools. In the 1960 's, some athletes who excelled in major international competitions provided the impetusfor increased interest and participation in sports by Kenyans from all walks of life. Consequently, many sports federations and organization to manage and administer various sports disciplines wereformed and registered by the Government. At this moment in the history of Kenya, there has been tremendous development of sports. Its popularity has stemmed from the understanding of the Government and the people of Kenya of the role of sports as a vehicle for national development. Indeed, the contribution of sports towards social, economic, cultural and political development of Kenya has been immense.
