Since the advent of file sharing, musicians have come up with a multitude of novel ways to fund their work, such as Pikup, the app that tracks users’ music listening habits and remunerates artists accordingly. Using the crowdfunding model, new startup Patreon enables fans to automatically donate money each time online content creators upload a new piece of work. Where platforms such as Kickstarter help to fund one-off projects for artists and new businesses, they don’t really help those – such as online musicians, film-makers and comedians – creating smaller pieces on a regular basis, requiring just as much time and financing. Created by Jack Conte – one half of the boyfriend-girlfriend band Pomplamoose, who achieved fame through their YouTube channel – Patreon gets fans to commit to donate a small amount for each piece of work completed by the artist. Fans set the amount they want to offer – usually USD 1 to USD 5 – and are able to set a limit for the month to stop from going over budget if the artist happens to have a prolific month. This means that the content creators on Patreon get a guaranteed sum for each piece of work, enabling them to continue investing time in their ongoing project. Interrogating Composition in the Age of Remix: the role of format in musical composition Anastasios Sarakatsanos post-viva submission for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Royal Holloway, University of London 2016 Abstract This thesis is concerned with composing audiovisual mashup pieces that involve filmed music performance and remix practices. I present here a number of audiovisual mashups I composed by separately filming and recording clips that were produced in other contexts and by later subsuming them into a new compositional form. These pieces, produced between 2011 and 2016, range from music clip inserts and music videos featured in television programmes, to urban development documentaries and self-commissioned projects. Focusing on hybrid audiovisual art-forms closely related to music videos, I examine the work of contemporary audiovisual artists, Ophir Kutiel (‘Kutiman’), Jack Conte (‘Pomplamoose’) and Mark Johnson (‘Playing for Change’), focusing on projects produced between 2008 and 2014, in relation to their composition techniques and methods of production and distribution. My research has included an examination of the way that music functions in this particular audiovisual context. As well as presenting my portfolio of compositions, I also perform a close textual analysis of certain specific samples from the portfolio, identifying the methods and techniques I adopted and adapted from the aforementioned artists and reflecting on their use and effects in my own compositions. Over the last decade, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of music artists who include video in their work and make it available through online streaming of their music, especially on audiovisual platforms such as YouTube.

Twelve short video clips are loaded onto the screen in a grid and playback is triggered by tapping any- where on the clip. This is similar to tapping the pads of an audio sample station, but extends that interaction to add visual sampling. Clips can be shot on-the-ﬂy with a camera- enabled mobile device and loaded into the player instantly, giving the performer an ability to quickly transform his or her surroundings into a sample-based, audiovisual instru- ment. Samples can also be sourced from an online commu- nity in which users can post or download content. The re- cent ubiquity of multitouch mobile devices and advances in pervasive computing have made this system possible, pro- viding for a vast amount of content only limited by the imagination of the performer and the community.
