The show ranks as the longest running musical revue in theater history and, despite its age, still keeps things current. The 37-year-old got his start playing Jimmy Yancey blues covers on piano and now records with his own band, Sonny and the Sunsets (he lives in the Sunset neighborhood of SF). A riot of music and art, his latest, most ambitious project "100 Records" blends all of his talents. Sonny dreamed up 100 imaginary bands — complete with their own personalities and musical styles — then produced an album for each. There's Zig Speck and the Specktones, Petite La Fille, Bandango Fandango. There's a girl group, a metal crew, an R&B band and a Jamaican Jet Austin guy called Walter the Goat. Jet Miami/Fort Lauderdale Smith invited 100 artists such William T. Wiley, Chris Johanson and Tucker Nichols to design 7" record covers for each album.
