News From.... Behind The RedCurtain Dear Members and Patrons, If we went by the weather in Cape Breton, no one would believe that the summer season is upon us. However, if you go by the Savoy Theatre’s schedule you’ll see that the season is indeed in full swing. We’re pleased to present a summer line-up that, as usual, offers a little something for everyone.

We’ve got an exciting summer ahead of us. The arrival of the White Stripes will mark the biggest show the Savoy has ever seen. This Detroit-based rock band will celebrate their 10th anniversary here with us, and have been quoted on their website as saying their show in Glace Bay will be the highlight of their tour. They’ve even got Cape Breton roots, claiming relation to Ashley MacIsaac and the MacMaster family. Ashley will be opening the show, and many distant relatives of the band will be in attendance. It should be a family reunion and a show to remember.

This season is a great time to see some of your favourite Cape Breton artists like Ashley MacIsaac and Gordie Sampson, who often perform while they’re home during the summer months. We’ve got everything from ghosts, to dancers, to rappers, and some tributes. And of course, we’ve got some traditional Cape Breton shows chock full of comedy and music. We’re also hosting some unique fundraisers like the ‘Sit Back and Relax’ Chair Auction and The Price is Right. Battle of the Bands is also back again, so there are lots of ways to come out and support the Savoy Theatre.

The Savoy is proud to produce two of its own shows this summer. The Dance Last Night was written by Howie MacDonald with Maynard Morrison and Bette MacDonald. It stars Howie, Mac Morin, Dave MacIsaac, John Chiasson. Stealing the spotlight from Howie is Molly Rankin, the very talented daughter of the late John Morris Rankin. Also, there’s a new ghost taking up residence at the Savoy Theatre, but only for a few days. Sir Simon is the star spook of The Canterville Ghost, a Red Curtain Production directed by Brian Gallivan. It’s running this weekend - June 21, 22 and 23.

The theatre is also an active member of the community. During the winter, we hosted breakfast meetings for the newly formed Glace Bay Rotary Club. Dance recitals have been going strong in the theatre for most of the spring, and school field trips will soon be upon us. Graduation and retirement parties are also being hosted in the lobby. We are also very pleased to be hosting Brystock this year at the theatre, and be sure to watch for an art event showcasing talented local artists coming in the fall.

So, if you don’t go by the weather – you can see that the summer is in high gear at the Savoy. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions about the Savoy, or the summer line-up please don’t hesitate to call us at 842-1599 or check out our website at www.savoytheatre.com

Sincerely, Donald Ferguson, Manager The White Stripes The White Stripes are coming to Glace Bay. And even if you’ve never heard of them, this is a big deal for the Savoy Theatre. The White Stripes are prob- ably the biggest act to grace our stage and we are very excited for this show. The White Stripes are a Detroit-based rock band and are touring Canada in a way that’s unusual for a band of their caliber. They’re hitting all the smaller venues from Iquialit to St. John’s. The Glace Bay stop is the highlight of their tour, as they celebrate their 10th anniversary with us. So what does this mean for the Savoy? For starters, the show sold out in 12 minutes. People camped outside the theatre all night to get tickets. We’ve already received national media coverage in publications like The Globe and Mail and McLean’s magazine. We’ve been mentioned in many regional newspapers. Tickets have been set aside for MuchMusic. People are coming in from as far away as Ohio, South Korea, Seattle, New York and California. People living in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario have re-scheduled their trips home for this concert–those who were lucky enough to get tickets. Corporations are showing a new-found interest in the theatre, offering sponsorships and proposing ways to be further involved with the Savoy, like buying tickets throughout the year to give away as staff incentives. And besides all of this, the lead singer has Cape Breton roots! His family name is Gillis and they left the North Sydney area in the 50’s to work in the Detroit car plants. His distant ‘cousin’ Ashley MacIsaac is opening for them! As you can see, this show has done wonders for the Savoy and needless to say we’re really looking forward to July 14th!

The Savoy is very pleased to present Brystock this year. Brystock is a concert and variety show which takes place annually on August 29th in Glace Bay, N.S. The show includes skits, auctions, and other onsite activities. It is dedicated to the memory of Bryan Patrick Lynk of the Glace Bay area who died on October 10th, 2003 at the I.W.K. children’s hospital in Halifax, after losing his life long battle with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The money raised during the evening is donated equally among the 5 major high schools in the surrounding area in the form of bursaries. Donations are also made to Shinerama, a nation wide university fundraiser for CF. The goal of the event is two-fold: to raise awareness and interest in CF., and to ensure the memory of Bryan lives on. Local bands are asked to participate and young people show up in droves to help out. Stop by the theatre on August 29th and check out the Brystock merchandise, see a band or make a donation. This show is organized by Bryan’s friends, an extraordinary group of young people who carry on their friend’s memory by giving back to the community in a way so fitting to this young man’s life. Kudos to them. Summer Students The Savoy is pleased to welcome four summer students. Tyler Lynk, Greg MacNeil, Nicole Bisson and Arlene MacIntyre are back again this summer to lend a hand during this busy season. white stripes contest the savoy theatre and cambridge suites have teamed up on a contest that provides the lucky winner with 2 tickets to the show, a night at the cambridge, dinner at goody’s and transportation to the show in the sheldon natahanson hummer. fill out your ballot at the Savoy or the cambridge suites summer fundraisers As many of you know, the Savoy relies heavily on fundraisers and box office revenue to stay afloat. The Savoy is a million dollar facility to maintain and we only get about $100,000 from various government agencies. So that leaves $900,000 for us to come up with. This summer the theatre will be holding three unique fundraisers with the intent on not only raising money for the theatre, but giving back to the community.

Battle of the Bands III Battle of the Bands is a popular event with the youth of the area. The first one was held last summer, and was followed up with a wintertime version called Battle of the Bands: Snow Jam. We generally take 8 -10 high school bands, and it’s based on the concept of the Idol shows. Performances are judged by a panel of volunteer judges, and one band goes home each week until two are remaining for the grand finale. Not only do the bands get great experience, they hone their performance skills and are presented with many opportunities like opening for touring bands and even going on tour themselves! It starts July 3 at 7 p.m. and runs every Tuesday with the exception of August 7th.

‘Sit Back and Relax’ Chair Auction Last year was our first year for this fundraiser and it went very well. This year, instead of getting the same artist to paint all the chairs, we’ve enlisted the help of talented artists to paint 50 adorindack chairs sponsored by local businesses. They’ll be on display with their sponsors and then they’ll be auctioned off at a gala evening. These chairs are one of a kind, and make a perfect addition to your backyard or deck. Watch for the chairs at a busi- ness near you. They’ll have a list of other sponsor locations so you check out all the chairs and see which one you’d like to bid on! The date of the auction will be announced once all chairs are delivered to their sponsors.

The Price is Right Yes, if you heard the rumor, its true. The Savoy is pleased to bring back its popular version of the game show The Price Is Right, complete with Bob Barker and his beauties. If you attended the Christmas version, you know what a fun night this is. A great way to kick off the summer, it will include eight games and two showcases, with prizes donated from generous local businesses. The show will be followed by an auction for prizes that haven’t been claimed. The show is Friday July 6 at 7 p.m., admission is $12. Savoy Summer Nights Line Up The Canterville Ghost -This Weekend! The Dance Last Night : A Red Curtrain Production When it comes to comedy and music, Cape Breton has no short- age – especially in fiddler Howie MacDonald. Together with Bette MacDonald and Maynard Morrison, he’s put together a new Red Curtain production called ‘The Dance Last Night,’ a loose stage version of his album of the same name. The story takes place at a dance in ‘Upper Lower Northeast-Southwest’ Community Hall with someincredible talent providing the musical soundtrack to this production. The show will star Mac- Donald, Mac Morin, John Chiasson Dave MacIsaac, with Colin Grant and also contributing. Another star of the show is Molly Rankin, the talented daughter of the late John Morris Rankin. And her genetics haven’t let her down as she sings, dances and plays the fiddle as well as two characters in the production. It’s already sold out shows all over the Island, but don’t worry, it’s coming back to the Savoy on August 6 & 7 at 8 p.m. It’s also going on the road, and you can catch it in Truro, Dingwall, St. Peter’s, Mabou and many other places. Tickets are $20. 4 Men in a Tub: Lots of Dates to Choose From! July 15, 16, 23, 29 & 30 August 20, 26 & 27 Showtime: 8 p.m. $20 Four Men in a Tub were a late season addition to the Savoy’s Summer Line up last year, and were an unexpected surprise. Rave reviews and great local talent are bringing this musical/comedy back to the Savoy’s stage in July. ’s 4 Men In A Tub is one of the most laughed about and talked about music and comedy theatre productions ever to be pro- duced on Cape Breton Island. The show is writ- ten, directed and performed by Duncan Wells, Brian Martin, George MacDonald and Shawn MacDonald. 4 Men In A Tub is the perfect evening out for friends, family and co-workers. Tourists and home-from-away visitors agree that 4 Men In A Tub was the highlight of their past summer vacations. The show is a unique blend of original and tradition songs, jazz standards, fiddle tunes and character driven sketches. This summer 4 Men In A Tub will celebrate Councillor Vince Hall, the new CBRM compost bins, along with the comings and goings of Cape Bretoners to Fort MacMurray. Diggy & Stewie are back at it with the do’s and don’t of fishing and Mucky Martin gets a new job as a volunteer fireman. This year’s show includes a special performance by Sniffy MacDonald. Don’t miss out on the fun!
