Audi’s classic Ur-Quattro still has what it takes for Arctic rally Supplied by Keith Barke A frozen world, cast in snow and ice. Ahead is Alaska, behind is the Yukon, both gripped in the deep freeze of an Arctic winter. The sky is slate-grey, no comfort coming from the distant sun, and as the road dips and weaves between mountain and valley, you can hear a characteristic five-cylinder growl. The landscape seems brutally inhospitable, but this is the natural habitat of the Quattro. And here it comes, an Ur-Quattro decked out for battle with quad rally lights up front to light the way and a set of studded Nokian Hakkipeliittas providing traction. Before I underline the team’s hopes and expectations for this event, I wish to acknowledge all the hard work that’s gone into putting on this rally in such a short amount of time. The efforts of AKK Sports and all the volunteers, particularly in the context of COVID-19, has really impressed me so a big thank you to them. It’s fair to say we showed our limits on Rallye Monte-Carlo and found ourselves licking our wounds and trying to get ahead. Unfortunately, it didn’t work there and after making some changes to our approach we start the second round of the season hoping it will be much better than the first. Having wished a fond farewell to Carlos del Barrio after Monte as he prepared for the next chapter of his career, we are pleased to welcome back Craig and Paul for the start of their half-season campaign in a Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. We know very well their ability and determination as they try to make a strong start to their season. As well as our regular World Rally Car drivers, we are giving a big chance to a really promising youngster, Oliver Solberg.

There is a review of recent race events and a few highlights from other aspects of motorsporting news. Matthew Mac Partlin Technical review Track safety devices – Run-offs and gravel traps Competitors and race vehicles can be fully prepared with safety equipment, but at some point or other a vehicle will unintentionally veer off the track. Sometimes the driver will be able to gather it up and rejoin the race, if there is sufficient space to do so. However, there is often a conflict between race track safety, spectator friendliness and geography. The safest track would probably be a straight road, with a wide run-off to either side and at either end and have no more Copyright Matthew Mac Partlin, 2010 Page 1 of 9 than a couple of cars competing on it at any one time. But it wouldn’t be terribly interesting to compete in or to watch.

    26. - 28. 8. 2011 www. Pravidelné vysoké hodnocení rally z organizačního a především bezpečnostního hlediska přineslo zasloužené ocenění, neboť Světová rally komise při FIA zařadila Barum Czech Rally Zlín opět do seriálu elitních soutěží evropského šampionátu.

FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE DE L'AUTOMOBILE 2021 FIA WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP CROATIA RALLY Pre-event FIA Press Conference April 22, 2021 Present: Kalle Rovanperä (FIN) – Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT Craig Breen (IRL) – Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team Adrien Fourmaux (FRA) – M-Sport Ford World Rally Team Pierre-Louis Loubet (FRA) – Hyundai 2C Competition Q: Kalle, we’re going to start with you as championship leader heading into the Croatia Rally. Big event for everyone, it’s a brand-new challenge out there. What can you say from what you’ve seen of the roads out there on the recce? KR: The rally is new for everybody and it’s nice to be starting first car on the road on a Tarmac event. But it looks like the conditions are going to be really tricky on the stages. The stages are mainly quite technical and fast all the time. The condition is quite good in some places but then some places when it was raining before the recce there was a lot of mud and dirt on the road so it won’t be so easy. Q: Is it like a gravel rally in parts or is it not that bad? KR: Some parts on Friday look like it’s not going to help us so much to be the first car. There are some stages in parts that are full mud after the recce and those parts will not be a big benefit for us but hopefully in some places it can help us also. Q: Do you feel any different being the championship leader or do you just feel like the normal Kalle Rovanperä? KR: Not really, it is not changing anything for me.

SNOW, ICE AND FROZEN GRAVEL FOR THE DEBUT OF THE PIRELLI SOTTOZERO ICE J1 IN FINLAND Pirelli’s Sottozero Ice J1 tyres face a wide variety of challenges in the new Arctic Rally Finland Perfect retention of studs in the icy conditions Ott Tänak leads from start to finish for Hyundai: excellent WRC debut for Oliver Solberg Milan, February 28, 2021 – Hyundai driver Ott Tänak led from start to finish of the Arctic Rally Finland, which replaced Rally Sweden this year. Toyota’s Kalle Rovanperä, aged just 20, finished second overall – his best-ever result – to take the championship lead, while teenager Oliver Solberg made an excellent World Rally Car debut (with a new co-driver as well) to finish seventh overall in another Hyundai. The winning tyre In contrast to Monte-Carlo, there was just one type of tyre available in Finland: the Sottozero Ice J1A, with 384 tungsten-tipped studs locked into the tyre thanks to a patented vulcanisation process. In total, the studs are 20 millimetres long, with seven millimetres protruding from the surface as per FIA regulations. These tyres are designed to work with ice and snow typical of Arctic Rally stages, by biting through the snowy surface and gripping into the ice underneath. The key stage With all the stages around 20 kilometres or longer – unusual for a world championship rally – they all played an important role in the final result. But the 22- kilometre rally-concluding Power Stage was particularly crucial as it was a repeat of the only other stage on Sunday, making it especially challenging with deeper ruts and more gravel, but also five extra championship points at stake.
