Songs about that most universal of all emotions, love, strike a chord with anyone who has or has had stars in their eyes. Of course your partner is the most wonderful person in creation — and why not? Such a relationship heightens your awareness and you really do look at the What is This Thing Called Love? through rose-coloured glasses. As the Thirties yielded to the Forties, subtle changes were taking place on the popular music front. The general trend was away from the livelier tunes to slower, more laid-back numbers. During the war years too, the personality vocalist came to the fore in a big way. Ella Fitzgerald, out of respect for Chick Webb who had died in carried on fronting his band for a while, before she too became a solo attraction in The big bands continued for a few more years until December when inside the space of a few weeks, eight American bandleaders disbanded. For some it was a temporary measure, for others it was for good. Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey were among the casualties, reflecting the shift in public taste. Perry was vocalist with the Ted Weems Orchestra for six years before embarking on his remarkable solo career. Hawkins had not long returned from a five year sojourn of Europe and was now at the peak of his powers. A protege of the great Harlem stride pianist James P Johnson, Fats progressed in leaps and bounds, gaining international stardom with his series of Fats Waller and his Rhythm recordings from Dinah Shore was one of the best of the popular vocalists, witness her smooth caressing tones on Body And Soul. That unmistakeable gravelly voice plus those effortless golden trumpet tones combine to give us a sample of the beloved Louis Armstrong, one of the What is This Thing Called Love? figures What is This Thing Called Love? classic jazz. He was far more besides, and an untiring ambassador for jazz and popular music with his All Stars from until his death in His place was eventually filled by John Senior.     Anna Pauline is a jazz vocalist and songwriter who sings straight from the heart. Born in Kalmar but raised in Höganäs, she grew up in a musical family, with a father who is a well-known trumpet player and a Danish mother familiar with the wealth of Denmark’s rich musical tradition. Anna Pauline’s multicultural identity has enriched her artistry, and her linguistic abilities have made her something of a world citizen in the jazz sphere. As a vocalist, Anna Pauline’s early inspiration came from the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day, Peggy Lee, Doris Day and Marilyn Monroe, as well as from singer/songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris. Her debut as a singer came at the tender age of four, and she went on to perform in a number of amateur musicals and reviews. Anna lived and studied for a time in Copenhagen, and in 2012 she completed her master’s degree at the Malmö Conservatory. Anna sees it as her mission not only to preserve the rich heritage of vocal jazz, but to contribute to it with her own compositions and lyrics, a process she began during an extended stay in France in 1996. Her debut album, “Meant to Be”, was recorded live at Dunker’s Auditorium in Helsingborg in 2011, followed by a series of concerts in Scandinavia, as well as the US. The album was nominated that same year for the prestigious Golden Record award by Orkester Journalen, and became the readers’ choice.     Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues. They appear as far back as book one of the Copyright Record Book. In that book, publisher A. Wundermann registered entry number 40, the waltz Isola Bella (Isle of Beauty), composed by Elise S. Hamilton, on July 15, 1870. Also in book one, Fanny Haskell registered the musical composition Nineteen Hundred, Charlotte Blume registered the musical composition My Desire (written by J. William Pope), and Mrs. G. De la Matte registered her book Piano and Musical Matters. While men were more well-known as Bobby Vee, The Drifters, Herman’s Hermits, jazz composers in the early twentieth The Chiffons, The Monkees, and Aretha century, a handful of women wrote Franklin.
