    Duke Ellington Kyle Etges Signature Recordings Cottontail. Cottontail stands as a fine example of Ellington’s “Blanton-Webster” years, where the ​ band was at its peak in performance and popularity. The “Blanton-Webster” moniker refers to bassist Jimmy Blanton and tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, who recorded Cottontail on May 4th, 1940 alongside Johnny Hodges, Barney Bigard, Chauncey Haughton, and Harry Carney on saxophone; Cootie Williams, Wallace Jones, and Ray Nance on trumpet; Rex Stewart on cornet; Juan Tizol, Joe Nanton, and Lawrence Brown on trombone; Fred Guy on guitar, Duke on piano, and Sonny Greer on drums. John Hasse, author of The Life and Genius of Duke ​ Ellington, states that Cottontail “opened a window on the future, predicting elements to come in ​ jazz.” Indeed, Jimmy Blanton’s driving quarter-note feel throughout the piece predicts a collective gravitation away from the traditional two feel amongst modern bassists. Webster’s solo on this record is so iconic that audiences would insist on note-for-note renditions of it in live performances. Even now, it stands as a testament to Webster’s mastery of expression, predicting techniques and patterns that John Coltrane would use decades later. Ellington also shows off his Harlem stride credentials in a quick solo before going into an orchestrated sax soli, one of the first of its kind. After a blaring shout chorus, the piece recalls the A section before Harry Carney caps everything off with the droning tonic. Diminuendo & Crescendo in Blue. This piece is remarkable for two reasons: Diminuendo & ​ ​ Crescendo in Blue exemplifies Duke’s classical influence, and his desire to write more ​ grandiose pieces with more extended forms.

    Anna Pauline is a jazz vocalist and songwriter who sings straight from the heart. Born in Kalmar but raised in Höganäs, she grew up in a musical family, with a father who is a well-known trumpet player and a Danish mother familiar with the wealth of Denmark’s rich musical tradition. Anna Pauline’s multicultural identity has enriched her artistry, and her linguistic abilities have made her something of a world citizen in the jazz sphere. As a vocalist, Anna Pauline’s early inspiration came from the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day, Peggy Lee, Doris Day and Marilyn Monroe, as well as from singer/songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris. Her debut as a singer came at the tender age of four, and she went on to perform in a number of amateur musicals and reviews. Anna lived and studied for a time in Copenhagen, and in 2012 she completed her master’s degree at the Malmö Conservatory. Anna sees it as her mission not only to preserve the rich heritage of vocal jazz, but to contribute to it with her own compositions and lyrics, a process she began during an extended stay in France in 1996. Her debut album, “Meant to Be”, was recorded live at Dunker’s Auditorium in Helsingborg in 2011, followed by a series of concerts in Scandinavia, as well as the US. The album was nominated that same year for the prestigious Golden Record award by Orkester Journalen, and became the readers’ choice. Anna Pauline has performed with a number of artists over the years including Peps Persson, Viktoria Tolstoy, Nils Landgren, Siw Malmqvist, Gösta Linderholm, John Pohlman, Papa Bue’s Viking Jazzband, Jesper Thilo, Gunhild Carling, Jazzin’ Jacks, Peter Asplund, Magnus Lindgren, Claes Jansson, Andreas Öberg and Anders Bergcrantz, among others.

    Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues. Schrijver/criticus Nat Hentoff produceerde voor de Timex TU Show in studio 58 van CBS in NYC 'The sound of Jazz' die in deze tijd toen er nog geen video bestond, op 16 mm film met aparte geluidsband werd opgenomen. Q.a. de Count Basie band in speciale bezetting en Thelonious Honk met een trio traden op, Hentoff had het briljante idee om Billie Holiday te laten zingen met een ook weer speciale formatie. Roy Eldridge speelde solo-trom- pet, naast hem Doe Cheatham. Dp trombone Uic Dickenson, dal liJaldron natuurlijk piano, verder Danny Barker-rhythmguitar, Milt Hinton-bas,Osie Johnson-drums. En er waren vier saxofonis- ten. Gerry flulligan op bariton en -dat was Hentoff's gouden greep- Ben Webster, Lester Young en Coleman Hawkins-tenorsaxo- foon. Solistisch in die volgorde. First Dance, F/D Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have time to locate sheet music and audio of the song(s). In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. Clients are not obligated to submit a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and/or avoided. If you desire the highest degree of control (asking the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we would ask for a minimum 80 requests from the band’s songlist.
