Hollingdean News Update: New Editors I’m excited to be a new editor of Hollingdean News! It’s been a packed summer and it looks like a busy autumn to follow. Romeo and Juliet wowed crowds and there’s talk of much more (page 4), the Lucky Dip was a great success (page 7), the pop-up Library opened (see below), the community centre defibrillator was installed and Hollingdean News received two new editors (myself as editor and Simon as listings editor) to name a few! We are very pleased to circulate what’s on in Hollingdean. There’s so much that it’s hard to know where to start: the ‘library of things’ continues to gather momentum (page 3), volunteers protect, manage and encourage our green spaces (page 4), there’s plans for a soup and a stomp across (page 6) and much more (see the listings on the back page). The Hollingdean News requires a Delivery Coordinator – if you are interested please get in touch. As always a big thank you to those that support us through advertising and contact us if you want advertising space in the newspaper (our circulation is over 3200!). I hope you enjoy this and future issues and are inspired to explore and enjoy Hollingdean even more. Duncan – Editor. [email protected]

Céza’s Autumn Update: Hollingdean Community Worker Library and digital hub in Hollingdean Opening times: Thursdays 10:00-14:00 at the Community Centre. ollingdean’s pop-up library and digital hub was officially launched on the 1st August. Over 60 adults and children turned up to celebrate and take part in activities. Some took H the chance to join City Libraries. This new community library is a collaboration between Brighton & Hove City Libraries, Hollingdean Community Centre and the Trust for Developing Communities. It includes books for adults and children to borrow, free Internet and wi-fi. There’s something for everyone - so come along! Every Thursday we are seeing new faces, and regulars, at the Community Centre asking about the library. The Real Junk Food Project café guests are also delighted as they can read a book or use a computer and/or access wi-fi on their devices, before or after their meal – the opening event was their busiest day since Christmas dinner 2018! It has been a very successful start and the impressions are that the library is meeting a real need in Hollingdean, as well as an encouragement to join and visit this invaluable resource. We need more volunteers so we can keep it running longer and hopefully open on another day.

Library of Things: Results are in! hanks to everyone who responded to my survey about whether a Library of Things or Borrowers Co-op could be viable in Hollingdean. I received lots of thoughtful responses, so I T wanted to share some of the headlines with you! Encouragingly, 83% of respondents would borrow from the library if one was nearby. I asked if an annual reward for members would make people more likely to use the scheme. Interestingly, the majority (71%) felt that a reward would not make them more likely to use the service. In fact 92% felt they would opt to re-invest their reward. Everyone said they would contribute a small fee to join the scheme. I asked what sort of items people would find most useful to borrow. As expected, the most popular were tools, gardening and other DIY equipment. People suggested their own ideas for more ways to share in the community. A bank of loose screws and nails was a particular favourite of mine. Many also offered their second hand items as a way to kickstart the inventory. As many also pointed out, maintenance and care of the equipment to ensure it’s safety will be key to a scheme’s success. I plan to consult with experts to make sure this is considered. Thanks again for everyone’s enthusiasm, it’s really heartening to see a scheme like this might work in Hollingdean. I’ll continue to update as the idea progresses. In the meantime, if you’d like to contact me, please feel free to email me, Ed Baker, at [email protected] Where the Wild Things Are …continued from page 1. ILD members aim to reclaim disused local spaces, restore local ecology, chill out in nature, gain enterprise W skills and earn money working in the community enterprise eco-café. A beautiful decked space is included in the plans, looking out over Brighton and the coast. Everyone will be welcome. Dog walkers are particularly pleased with the idea! How is this all coming about? Local resident and fundraising consultant Julia Blagbrough, (WILD Director) talked to local people and others who use the area about the disused skate park and how it could benefit Hollingdean. It is clear that local young people want a safe space to hang out in, and to make a positive difference to the environment on our doorsteps. A growing community membership is stepping forward to get involved, including Hollingdean resident and architect, Stuart Hoyle. Local permaculture hero Stephan Gherels will head up WILD’s ecological restoration programme. WILD is also working together with Friends of Hollingdean Park, Hollingdean Ecological Action Project, Brighton Permaculture Trust, and Youth Strikes4Climate Change to name a few. Ruby Orsola, Sonny Da Luz and Joe Evershed are founder members of the Youth Council who are sending out a call to action asking everyone who wants to join to get in touch. The Youth Council meets next on Wednesday 18th September, 17:30, at Hollingdean Park. It’s an exciting time! Want to join in? WILD want to hear from Youth Council and adult community members as well. Chainsaws at Dawn: Volunteering opportunities and plans for parks riends of Hollingdean Park (FOHP) & Hollingdean Ecological Action Project F (HEAP) have been busy planting trees in the park and also around Hollingdean Estate. We are always looking for new people from the local area to get involved and help us with practical tree care & building projects as well as fundraising. Plans are in action to make a new pond in the top right corner of the football pitch above Hollingdean park, build stiles for fences around the orchard and into the football pitch from the park, create a new wooden balance trails/stepping stones up near the new bench by Dan Cordell (see photo). One local resident is exploring the opportunities for a wheelchair swing and another is exploring ways to develop the park as more of a community garden. Email [email protected] for more info and to share ideas or find us on Facebook. Friends of Hollingbury and Burstead Woods e are very lucky in Hollingdean to have two areas of woodland, Hollingbury and Burstead Woods. Both of these woodlands, and the Butterfly Bank at the top of W Hollingbury Park, are managed by a voluntary group called the Friends of Hollingbury and Burstead Woods (FHBW) under the watchful eye of the Brighton and Hove Rangers. The group works hard to increase biodiversity in the woods by creating glades of short grass where sunlight can reach the ground, enabling low lying plants such a Dog-Violets and Creeping Thistle to flourish. These plants provide nectar for bees and also for butterflies such as the Orange Tip and the White-letter streak, both of which are now quite common in the woods. Other tasks include litter-picks, bulb planting, and even bench making. If you are interested in volunteering with FHBW then please email us at [email protected]. Or, check our website at http://www.fhbw.org.uk/index.html for the dates of Working Sessions and just turn up. We also have a Facebook page. We are always on the look-out for new volunteers and have a range of tasks to suit everyone. The next dates we meet in 2019 are Saturday 5th October, Sunday 3rd November and Saturday 7th December and even further ahead in 2020: Sunday 5th January, Saturday 1st February. Join us at the shed in bottom of Roedale Valley Allotments at 10am and finish at 1pm.
