The research conducted by author reveals that anti -systemic electorate is less interested in politics and more likely to be influenced by electoral TV spots. The study also confirms the relation between emotional atti tudes to political actors and political preferences. According to the results of expe riment anti-systemic voters expressed more positive feelings towards candidates from out of the political mainstream, and the other way round, the pro-systemic electorate rather liked the candidates presented by parliamentary parties. LSE European Politics and Policy (EUROPP) Blog: What are the prospects for Poland’s radical right Confederation? Page 1 of 4 What are the prospects for Poland’s radical right Confederation? Poland’s October election saw the unexpected success of a strongly pro-free market and nationalist radical right challenger to the ruling party. However, as Aleks Szczerbiak writes, the new grouping’s youthful, anti-establishment core electorate is notoriously fickle, and its ideological eclecticism – and the presence of highly controversial personalities among its leaders – makes it an unstable political construct. Formally constituted at the beginning of 2019, the radical right-wing ‘Confederation’ (Konfederacja) grouping is a political conglomerate comprising an eclectic mix of economic libertarians clustered around the veteran political eccentric Janusz Korwin-Mikke and radical nationalists from the National Movement (RN) party. The Confederation’s first electoral outing was in the 2019 European Parliament (EP) elections, when one of its leaders summed up the grouping’s policy platform as: ‘we don’t want Jews, homosexuals, abortion, taxes and the EU’. But the Confederation’s signature issue was its criticism of the alleged failure of the government, led since 2015 by the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party, to stand up to the United States and Israel over the question of Jewish wartime reparations – something the Confederation views as being emblematic of the government’s inability to defend Poland’s international interests effectively (a charge the ruling party denies vehemently). The Confederation narrowly failed to cross the 5% parliamentary representation threshold for parties, winning 4.6% of the votes, and most commentators expected it to once-again fail in the October parliamentary election last year. -

In the Shadow of Plagues:2020 Presidential Elections in Poland

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the turnout in the 2020 presidential elections was the second-highest since 1989. The glib answer might be that voters were simply availing themselves of the opportunity to leave the house, however briefly, since COVID-19 measures had largely confined people to their homes for most of the year. More likely, albeit paradoxically, heightened voter interest was triggered by political autocratisation, the other plague that Poles have been struggling with, in this case since 2015. The election was won by the incumbent, Andrzej Duda, whose advantage was credited to his appeal among less-educated and older people living in rural areas. In the end, the governing Law and Justice (PiS) party, which had backed Duda’s campaign, managed to avoid cohabitation-related inconvenience for the second time. Key words: Presidential elections, voting behaviour, autocratisation, pandemic, Poland Introduction residential elections in semi-presidential systems seem to be as important as par- Pliamentary ones. This claim is grounded on the observations that all political par- ties invest their effort and resources to win these elections and that citizens tend to vote for a candidate for head of state more often than for prospective deputies. -

If none of the 11 candidates running manages to win an absolute majority a second round will be organised two weeks later - on 24th May. The Virus of Hate: Brown Book of the Epidemic A selection of xenophobic incidents documented by the “NEVER AGAIN” Association in the context of the coronavirus epidemic in 2020 Warsaw, May 2020 The Virus of Hate: Brown Book of the Epidemic A selection of xenophobic incidents documented by the “NEVER AGAIN” Association in the context of the coronavirus epidemic in 2020 JANUARY WARSAW. On 11th January, in an interview broadcast on Polish Radio 24 (public broadcaster), Dr. Jerzy Targalski, a columnist of the Gazeta Polska newspaper and a lecturer at the Centre for Eastern European Studies at the University of Warsaw, made a bizarre statement about the COVID- 19 epidemic, which included racial overtones. He said: “We have yet to see to what extent this epidemic will spread outside of China, as so far it is proven than the Chinese are more susceptible than representatives of the white race. […] I think it won’t spread”. Then, on 28th March, in an interview for the radical-right Fronda.pl website, Targalski was asked: “Could this pandemic be a result of factional infighting in China?” and he replied: “When you know Communism, you know that there’s no crime a Communist wouldn’t stoop down to in order to take or preserve power”. Targalski is a host of many television programmes on right-wing TV Republika and a co-author of the book, Children of Officials (2013), which presented modern Poland as ruled by a conspiracy of the post-Communist elite, often with Jewish background. This book was criticised for manipulation and antisemitic stereotypes. -
