PADMA AWARDS 2020 * Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, and Padma Shri. * The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. * ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service. * ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order. * ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year. * These awards are conferred by the President of at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year. * This year the President has approved conferment of 141 Padma Awards including 4 duo cases (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one) as per list below. * The list comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan, 16 Padma Bhushan and 118 Padma Shri Awards. * 33 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 18 persons from the category of Foreigners/ NRI/ PIO/ OCI and 12 Posthumous awardees.

Awardees to remember * Six-time world champion MC has been awarded the prestigious Padma Vibhushan whereas World Champion shuttler PV Sindhu has been conferred the Padma Bhushan. Mary Kom won a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics. Sindhu is a silver medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympics and is also the only Indian world champion in badminton. * The other six sportspersons were named for Padma Shri. They are cricketer , current Indian women's hockey captain , former Indian men's hockey player M P Ganesh, shooter , former Indian women's football team captain and archer . Rani Rampal has played more than 200 matches for India and she recently helped the country secure a Tokyo Olympics berth by beating the United States in the qualification match.

* Former union ministers Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj and George Fernandes have been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan. Former Mauritius Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth have been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan. * Former Defence Minister , industrialists and Venu Shrinivasan, former Nagaland Chief Minister S.C. Jamir and Jammu and Kashmir politician Muzaffar Hussain Baig have been awarded with the Padma Bhushan. * Producer Ekta Kapoor, director Karan Johar, actor Kangna Ranaut and singer Adnan Sami will receive the Padma Shri. * Late Abdul Jabbar, a 1983 Bhopal gas leak victim who ran an advocacy group for other victims and survivors. He provided vocational training to 2300 widows of gas leak victims and fought for medical rehabilitation of victims in courts, was awarded Padma Shri. * Kerala-born Sathyanarayan Mundayoor or ‘Uncle Moosa’, also awarded Padma Shri for social work, has been honoured for promoting education and reading culture in Arunachal Pradesh by starting a home library movement. * Tribal lady from Karnataka Tulasi Gowda with no formal education, has been awarded Padma Shri on account of her vast knowledge of various species of plants and herbs. * ‘Langar Baba’ Jagdish Lal Ahuja, a Padma Shri winner, has been serving food daily to hundreds of poor patients and attendants outside PGIMER hospital in Punjab. He sold off his properties to fuel his mission and was undeterred even by his stomach cancer. PADMA SRI
