Description of Project (No more than 300 words) This narrative should include evidence of impact in at least three of the four SELEP Federated areas and links to sector based working groups England’s Creative Coast is SECEN’s flagship tourism project to create an innovative new immersive visitor experience driven by world class art, which aims to build the volume and value of visitors to the federated area. The project is Pan-LEP and the partnership includes Turner Contemporary (Margate), Visit Kent, East Sussex County Council, Kent County Council, Southend Borough Council, Essex County Council, Visit Essex, Southeastern, Metal (Southend) and Estuary Festival, Whitstable Biennale, Creative Foundation (Folkestone), Towner Art Gallery (Eastbourne), De La Warr Pavilion (Bexhill on Sea), Jerwood Gallery (Hastings) and The Historic Dockyard Chatham, as well as. Pallant House Gallery, Cass Sculpture Foundation and Arundel Castle in West Sussex who are promotional partners. It will help deliver the growth potential identified within the SELEP Creative Economy Prospectus and that of the newly emerging Tourism Working Group. Predicted visitor growth from this project is 3% in East Sussex, Kent and Essex by 2020, enabling 4.700 direct and indirect jobs across the region. Led by Turner Contemporary and Visit Kent, investment has already been secured from Arts Council England’s Cultural Destinations programme (£500k) and 1 Sector Support Fund (SSF) VisitEngland’s Discover England Fund (£350k) as well as many of the local authorities. England’s Creative Coast is designed to respond to current visitor behaviour trends, tap into new markets and will create a step change for the galleries and the tourism sector across the area. It addresses the challenges of the South East as a destination with no one major urban centre and builds practical and scalable initiatives and interconnections across the South East and beyond. The project will continue to stimulate further innovation and growth beyond the lifetime of this project by delivering: World class art featuring a minimum of 7 art commissions creating a connected South East coast trail; Two itinerary-planning online platforms (one B2B, one B2C) which aim to increase income opportunities for tourism businesses across the South East; A multifaceted international and national tourism marketing campaign; Local engagement programmes capturing a “sense of place” delivered by the cultural partners; Artists’ “bnb” audit, training and toolkit; Increased opportunity for spend of new visitors attracted to the Turner Prize (Margate 2019), Folkestone Triennial 2020, Estuary Festival 2020, Whitstable Biennale 2020, and the new National Coast Path; Promotion of sustainable travel and accessibility to visitors, encouraging use of different modes of transport and eco-friendly options as part of their trip, such as bicycle hire and train travel brokered through sponsorship such as with Southeastern trains and working with cycle tour operators such as The Carter Company and is open to any business providing cycle hire. Accessibility will be key to the development of the art commissions – ensuring that everyone is able to access the works in some way (through level access or through film); An iterative learning programme, knowledge sharing events, training and development; Research (quantitative and qualitative) – There will be an assessment and report on the Volume and Value of tourism activities across the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP) region and West Sussex (this is the first time this baseline data has been collated in one report), as well as a report on current perceptions of the SELEP region with collation of data from existing perception research and some primary research targeted at French and Dutch markets. Furthermore, the cultural partners will undertake research into tourists visiting their venues through a shared survey; Scalable options for Associate Partners to utilise such as the new geocaching activity. 6. Project links to SELEP Strategic Economic Plan Please identify which objectives within the current SEP that this project will assist in delivering England’s Creative Coast drives growth, innovation and prosperity by linking the federal areas through an innovative and collaborative project that taps into one of the fastest growing sectors – the creative industries. The project encourages business growth through tourism and culture and exposes the South East to the international market place. It will particularly target the French and Dutch Markets. Building on economic strengths: The creative industries are worth more than £87.4bn in GVA to the UK and the creative economy employs one in every 11 working people (approx. 24% of the workforce). Tourism generates £106 billion a year to the British economy, employing over 2m people and supporting thousands of businesses. The project is rooted in partnership working, connecting people, businesses and places, and building a new offer that will create resilience and growth. It aims to contribute to a 3% growth in the visitor economy across the SELEP area. Building skills, sharing knowledge: British tourism is expected to grow to £257 billion by 2025. This project will enable knowledge exchange across the creative industries and tourism sectors on a region-wide level, delivering growth in information and skills. This will stimulate cross-sectorial working between partners and tourism businesses and enable the two sectors to work together to maximise the opportunities to increase visitors to the SELEP region. Investment of £150,000 from SELEP will lever in £1.02m match. 7. Total value (£s) of SSF sought (net of VAT) The total value of Sector Support Funding sought will be £150,000. INTRODUCTION Anthicidae are a cosmopolitan family of small to medium-sized, fast-moving beetles of the superfamily Tenebrionoidea. Anthicidae are represented in the World fauna by approximately 100 genera, and about 3500 species (Chandler, 2010). Only a few species are known from the fossil record. The last revision of the British Anthicidae was published by F. D. Buck (1954) in the well-known series Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects. Since then, there have been numerous nomenclatural changes within Anthicidae, and some additional species (introduced) have been recorded from the UK, making Buck’s key out of date. During 2004 and 2005 a total of 3356 specimens of Anthicidae from the UK and Ireland were examined by the author, mainly from the collections of The Natural History Museum (London), Oxford University Museum of Natural History and National Museum of Ireland. Additional data for more than 2100 specimens were received from other British museums and private collections between 2005 and 2007. A new key and short diagnoses for the genera are presented, as well as data on habitats and general distribution of species.

    University of Westminster Duncan Bowie January 2017 Reflections, Issue 19 BEYOND THE COMPACT CITY: A LONDON CASE STUDY – SPATIAL IMPACTS, SOCIAL POLARISATION, SUSTAINABLE 1 DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL JUSTICE Duncan Bowie Senior Lecturer, Department of Planning and Transport, University of Westminster [email protected] Abstract: Many urbanists argue that the compact city approach to development of megacities is preferable to urban growth based on spatial expansion at low densities, which is generally given the negative description of ‘urban sprawl’. The argument is often pursued on economic grounds, supported by theories of agglomeration economics, and on environmental grounds, based on assumptions as to efficient land use, countryside preservation and reductions in transport costs, congestion and emissions. Using London as a case study, this paper critiques the continuing focus on higher density and hyper-density residential development in the city, and argues that development options beyond its core should be given more consideration. It critiques the compact city assumptions incorporated in strategic planning in London from the first London Plan of 2004, and examines how the both the plan and its implementation have failed to deliver the housing needed by Londoners and has led to the displacement of lower income households and an increase in spatial social polarisation. It reviews the alternative development options and argues that the social implications of alternative forms of growth and the role of planning in delivering spatial social justice need to be given much fuller consideration, in both planning policy and the delivery of development, if growth is to be sustainable in social terms and further spatial polarisation is to be avoided.

In 1970 the shingle beach, now owned by the Environment Agency, was declared a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) by the County Council, who also appointed a Management Committee to administer the LNR. This was the beginning of Rye Harbour Local Nature Reserve. Since then further land has been added by agreement with neighbouring landowners and the County Council and by purchase of land by the Sussex Wildlife Trust with the help of the Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. It is hoped that further areas of the SSSI will become part of the Nature Reserve and so this report covers the whole area. The present extent of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, some 326ha, includes the seaward shingle ridges extending inland to, and including, the gravel pit known as Ternery Pool and the nearby excavation known as the Quarry (Beach Reserve), a large gravel pit (Castle Water), a large area of meadow land and shingle ridges around Camber Castle (Castle Farm) and a small area of saltmarsh fringing the western bank of the River Rother between Rye Harbour and the river mouth.

    THE COMPELLING CASE FOR CHANGE The new Kent and Medway Local Enterprise Partnership July 2015 1 2 This document sets out a compelling case to change the geography of the South East Local Enterprise Partnership. It proposes the establishment of a new Kent and Medway LEP – one which is highly relevant to business and which builds on a cohesive economic geography, a deep understanding of our economic challenges and opportunities and an excellent partnership between business and government. Our new Partnership will deliver faster and better for Kent and Medway and for the UK. This document sets out how we will build a new approach to delivering the skills, the infrastructure and the innovation for a highly productive economy – and how we will work together strategically and with strong governance across the county to deliver long term growth. The existing South East LEP slows down the delivery of our ambitions. We will be more focused and more effective through a Kent and Medway Local Enterprise Partnership. But we are committed to working together with our neighbours in Essex, East Sussex and London. We are working with our partners to ensure a smooth transition from the South East LEP to better arrangements. It’s time for change. We have a compelling case for a better future.     A Summary of the New UK Biodiversity Action Plan Priority Moths Introduction The following species have been published as new UK BAP Priority Species (see the Species and Habitat Review 2007 on www.ukbap.org.uk ). The purpose of this document is to provide a brief overview of the status and ecology (where known), as well as identifying initial conservation priorities, although some actions are already underway for some of these species. 71 Stigmella zelleriella Ecology The larva mines the leaves of Creeping Willow on coastal sandhills during July and again in September – October. The mine is a gallery which follows the leaf margin before widening to a small blotch. It can be confused with that of S. salicis . Past Distribution Only known in the UK from Sandwich Bay, Kent and an unconfirmed record from Lindisfarne, Northumberland. Current Distribution Reported from Lindisfarne in 1997. May still occur at Sandwich Bay but confirmation is needed. Initial Conservation Priorities - determine status, size of population, area of available habitat and threats at Lindisfarne - establish current status at Sandwich Bay - if still present at Sandwich Bay, liase with land owner over management to increase foodplant resource - raise profile to encourage survey at suitable sites on east coast of England 133 Lampronia capitella Ecology The larvae feed on the seeds of currant and Wild Gooseberry. Tenanted fruits appear prematurely ripe. In the following spring it feeds in a bud, usually causing the death of the developing shoot. The adult flies in late May and June. It is found in gardens and also woodlands where the foodplants occur.
