Cameron had been director of the school for almost ten years at the time; with his ambitious and fertile im- agination, he had no trouble seeing splendid new buildings amid the dark woods and stars or a committed supporter in Harvie. The two men walked on into the night, spinning out grand visions of an educated, cultured cit- izenry arising from the inspirations of Banff. Envisioned as an educational institution and world centre for art and culture in the Canadian Rockies, the Banff School was conceived as “the Salzburg of America” by its long-time director Donald Roy Cameron (1901–89).
