Prayer for Vocations

Almighty Father: You have created for us some definite purpose. Grant us the grace to know the path You have planned for us in this life and to respond with a generous “Yes.” Make our archdiocese, parishes, homes and hearts fruitful ground for Your gift of vocations. May our young people respond to Your call with courage and zeal. Stir among our men a desire and the strength to be good and holy priests. Bless us with consecrated religious and those called to a chaste single life, permanent deacons, and faithful husbands and wives, who are a sign of Christ’s love for His Church. We commend our prayer for vocations to You, Father, through the intercession of Mary our Mother, in the Holy Spirit, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Fashion designer Asha Ama Bias-Daniels is making it her mission to celebrate African-American identity and style. The Avondale resident is the 34th annual Duncanson artist-in-residence at the Taft Museum of Art. During her residency, April 12-26, shared her talents through workshops, school visits and virtual events. And until June 6, Garments by Asha Ama Bias-Daniels will be on display at the Taft Museum, in addition to the exhibit Walk This Way: Footwear from the Stuart Weitzman Collection of Historic Shoes. A graduate of St. Ursula Academy and the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP), Bias-Daniels was a finalist on the "Project Runway" reality TV spinoff, “” in 2014 and competed in the newest “Project Runway All Stars.” Her designs have been worn by former Disney Channel star Zendaya and country music group Little Big Town. In her own line, Asha Ama, she is exploring what it means to be Black following 2020 – the year of the pandemic and the death of George Floyd in police custody. In addition, she has founded Created to Create to mentor Black underprivileged teenage girls. Bias-Daniels, 33, recently spoke with the Cincinnati Business Courier about her work. What is the theme of your Duncanson residency? Identity. I want it to be all-inclusive. I’m excited about the virtual tours and panel talks. I want to encourage everyone from all walks of life. Even though I’m speaking as a Black woman who is American, I want to challenge everybody to think about the way the world has misidentified us, and how we can take our power back and realize our identity. How do you interpret that in your collection? The collection has a modern-day afro-futuristic feel. (When) people think futurism, they think technology, but this is the opposite spin. It’s reconnecting us to nature. I entitled the (Negro Solstice) piece “Moon and Sea,” because it is inspired by the night sky with the moon and stars and sea, and that beautiful reflection of the moon when you look at the ocean at night. My inspiration came from doing research on my ancestors’ history. Slaves used the North Star to find freedom, so it’s that connection to nature and how that will help us find freedom. Have you traced your own ancestry? My dad (Charles Daniels) did the DNA test. There’s an interesting story. His father came from Huntsville, Ala., and had midnight jet black skin. His mother was passable for white and had freckles. They caught flack in public because people thought they were an interracial couple. There was word that they were going to get lynched. They had a Jewish friend who lent them money and told them to get out of town. They made it to Cincinnati, and they didn’t have anything. St. Joseph Catholic Church on Ezzard Charles Drive set them up. So that’s why I’m a Black Catholic. Do you have a favorite childhood memory? When I was a kid, I didn’t know I was going to be a fashion designer but I’ve always loved fashion. My mom, Pamela Bias-Daniels, taught me to sew. I used to hand-sew stuff with scraps for my sister. She was my life- size Barbie doll. When I went for my First Communion, my parents collaborated and made me a white lace Nefertiti hat. At the time, I was like, this is cool but kind of weird. Now that I’m an adult, I appreciate how much my parents allowed me to be creative, just by seeing how creative they were. How did DAAP prepare you for your career as a couture designer? DAAP prepared me for the rigor that comes along with this field of work -- getting used to not sleeping, working all day and working through the night. It also gave me great actual experience in the field. I love that they have a co-op program. I was fortunate enough to work in the corporate side of fashion, and then the couture side (with Marchesa). I loved the couture side of fashion, but you really don’t get paid (much) if you work for someone’s couture design house. I learned that if I’m going to struggle, I’m going to do it for my own namesake and not somebody else’s…. Is fashion an art form? Absolutely. Looking back on my experiences at DAAP and my career, I’ve often been misunderstood, because my approach to fashion has always been, this is an art form. This is an extension of self-expression, of giving a message behind what we’re wearing... Here at St. Joseph Catholic Church, we congratulate Ms. Bias-Daniels and her family on this marvelous achievement. Well done!
