This October we’ll also be hosting a listening party using our award- winning podcast series EXITED. Produced by the WXXI News’ Inclusion Desk, the podcast shares the journey of eight young people with disabilities as they transition into adulthood. The first of four EXITED listening parties planned throughout the year will focus on the different tracks available to special education students in high school. It will be hosted at our station on October 4. (More information about the listening party is on the inside back cover of this magazine.)

October 4 is also the premiere date for Season 15 of our national health care series, Second Opinion, airing that evening at 8:30p.m. on WXXI-TV. The new season tackles complex health issues including alcoholism, biologics in orthopedics, and HIV. The HIV episode (airing in November) features Olympic diver Greg Louganis, who was diagnosed with HIV in the late 1980s.

October promises to be a busy month of programming with a lot of important issues on radio, television and on-line. Thank you for your support. It’s what makes our service to the community possible, and we certainly couldn’t do it without you!

Sincerely,

Norm Silverstein [email protected] | @normWXXI Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Located in Victor, GANONDAGAN STATE HISTORIC SITE is dedicated to sharing knowledge about the Seneca and their relationship to the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy. Spanning 569 acres, Ganondagan is the original site of a 17th century Seneca town that existed there peacefully more than 350 years ago. Today, visitors can enjoy hiking trails, a full-size Seneca Bark Longhouse, and the Seneca Art & Culture Center. WXXI connects with G. Peter Jemison, historic site manager, to learn more about Ganondagan and the Haudenosaunee.

Q. What are the defining principles of the Haudenosaunee? The message of peace, power and righteousness. Q. Tell us about the Iroquois White Corn Project. The goal is to get our people eating our traditional food by making it available ready to cook. We G. PETER JEMISON, also want to encourage our farmers to grow the corn so we can process it and bring it back into the HISTORIC SITE MANAGER communities. In addition to many community building programs such as annual husking bees and community meals, the project also acts as a job readiness program. EVENTS Q. How is the design of the Seneca Art & Culture Center and its landscape significant? Mirroring a traditional Seneca Bark Longhouse, the Center is built on an east to west axis, has high ceilings and skylights similar to smoke holes. The Center houses permanent and changing exhibits; our current exhibit is “Hodinöhsö:ni’ Women from the time of Creation.” Q. Ganondagan appears in PBS’ Native America. Tell us about its involvement in the production. The flmmakers were interested in the message that united the Haudenosaunee people, the Great Law of Peace. They wanted to learn about the roles of the three individuals who were responsible for sharing the message, the principles, and to understand what happened when the Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga and Mohawk accepted the message of peace. Native America premieres 10/23 at 9pm on WXXI-TV. Q. Anything else you’d like readers to know? Friends of Ganondagan is a not-for-proft organization and through community support, provides year- round programming, manages the Iroquois White Corn Project, and the Center’s gift shop. Upcoming events: 10/6-7th – Women of Ganondagan, 11/11 – Canandaigua Treaty Commemoration, 11/17 – Wampum Bracelet Workshop, 12/8 – Native American Winter Arts Festival

FRANK ON THE COVER OF WXXI’S Frank Calandra received the Charles M. Wise Volunteer of the Year award AUGUST 1989 PROGRAM GUIDE, CHARLES M. WISE A SPOOF ON PLEDGE DRIVES. at our Volunteer Recognition Event. This award is given to an individual who exemplifies the same enthusiasm and dedication to the station that Charles had. Frank VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR has been volunteering in many capacities for WXXI for approximately 35 years. We had the opportunity to talk with him about his long history with the station. How did you get involved with WXXI in the first place? FRANK A group I belonged to was asked to take pledges during a TV membership drive. I thought, “Sounds like fun!” It was. CALANDRA Share a couple of your favorite volunteer stories Whenever volunteering for a radio drive, I always chose the 6am spot during Simon Pontin’s shift on Classical 91.5. Back then, the phone banks were right inside Simon’s studio. When he put a record on, we could talk, and Simon would always join in the conversations. He’d have us laughing, and then when a call came in or the music stopped, we all had to stifle our laughter. WXXI’s Auction was a huge event years ago, broadcasting live, with a high excitement level. Once someone called in a rather high bid, but would only place it if a certain talent got a pie-in-the-face on the air. So they did it, taking him by surprise and he laughed harder than anyone. Sometimes volunteering leads to opportunities, like when I met Bruce Austin while assigned to WXXI’s Appraisal Fair. I shared that I enjoyed old cameras and was part of a club that hosted the PhotoHistory Symposium. Bruce had been to it, and was disappointed when I told him we stopped hosting them. That’s when he got his employer, RIT, to take over the event, and it was a huge success. Tell us a little about yourself I spent many years as a special machine designer & manufacturing engineer for Rochester companies. That led to a decade of working for design software companies in the San Francisco Bay area and NYC. I retired in 2001. I live in Webster with my wife Karen, who recently joined me in retirement. We have two grown children – my daughter is a Senior Associate Registrar at Temple University in Philadelphia and my son manages a heavy equipment service and rental business in Sarasota. WRUR-FM 88.5 Spotlight CONGRATS TO GUMBO VARIATION’S RICK SIMPSON Rick Simpson, retired host of WRUR-FM’s Gumbo Variation, received the Golden Microphone award at WXXI and the Little Theatre’s Volunteer Recognition Event in late August. The Golden Microphone award recognized Rick’s long-term and invaluable service and dedication to WRUR. Rick’s love affair with radio started when he was 10 and his parents gave him one of those little 9-volt transistor radios for Christmas. In the late 60’s, he discovered FM radio and that cemented his love. He did college radio at Oneonta State on WONY and at Geneseo State’s WGSU for a total of 6 years. He longed for the opportunity to return to the airwaves and when he started working at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at RIT, he had the opportunity to do so on WITR. During the next few summers he also filled in on the All Weather Lunch on WRUR and was given his full- time slot in 2010. Rick retired from hosting his show Gumbo Variations earlier this year, but still fills in occasionally for Open Tunings with Scott Regan.
