Izvorni naučni rad Josip MILETIĆ (Zadar) University of Zadar [email protected] Tea TEREZA VIDOVIĆ-SCHREIBER (Split) University of Split [email protected] DALMATIA – BETTIZA’S LOST HOMELAND The paper analyses the potential of Bettiza’s fiction for the deve- lopment of Croatian and Italian cultural relations as well as tourist promotion of the Croatian historical region of Dalmatia. Particular attention is focused on the novel Exile, in which the author writes a family chronicle by evoking his Split roots. At the same time, he describes the atmosphere, customs and picturesque figures of Dal- matian towns in the interwar period, the encounter of Slavic and Roman culture, as well as the destiny of the Italian population there who, due to the turmoil of war and socialist revolution, decided to leave their homeland. Reception of Bettiza’s work, as an account of an individual history that is completely different from the written (national), the collective history, can positively affect the Italian perception of Dalmatia as a tourist destination, and it can improve the distorted image of Croats living there, which has been created for decades in Italy, through the activist action of extreme groups, therefore it can be of multiple use. Proving that not all Italians for- cibly left their former homeland, but that a part of them left freely seeking a better life for themselves and their families not seeing any perspective in the upcoming communism, allows for the constructi- on of bridges between Slavic and Roman culture, and an even better and more effective tourism promotion of this Croatian region in the context of Italian tourist interests. -

Book Art in Croatia BOOK ART IN CROATIA National and University Library in Zagreb, Zagreb, 2018 Contents Foreword / 4 Centuries of Book Art in Croatia / 5 Catalogue / 21 Foreword The National and University Library in Croatia, with the aim to present and promote the Croatian cultural heritage has prepared the exhibition Book Art in Croatia. The exhibition gives a historical view of book preparation and design in Croatia from the Middle Ages to the present day. It includes manuscript and printed books on different topics and themes, from mediaeval evangelistaries and missals to contemporary illustrated editions, print portfolios and artists’ books. Featured are the items that represent the best samples of artistic book design in Croatia with regard to their graphic design and harmonious relationship between the visual and graphic layout and content. The author of the exhibition is art historian Milan Pelc, who selected 60 items for presentation on panels. In addition to the introductory essay, the publication contains the catalogue of items with short descriptions. 4 Milan Pelc CENTURIES OF BOOK ART IN CROATIA Introduction Book art, a constituent part of written culture and Croatian cultural heritage as a whole, is ex- ceptionally rich and diverse. This essay does not pretend to describe it in its entirety. Its goal is to shed light on some (key) moments in its complex historical development and point to its most important specificities. The essay does not pertain to entire Croatian literary heritage, but only to the part created on the historical Croatian territory and created by the Croats. Namely, with regard to its origins, the Croatian literary heritage can be divided into three big groups. -

Inscribing the 'Self in the City: Stelio Mattioni and Trieste Katia Pizzi University of Kent at Canterbury Trieste is perhaps best known for its geographical eccentricity. Perched on the upper N o r t h - E a s t e m comer of t h e Adriatic sea, Trieste has enjoyed or, perhaps, suffered almost since its foundation around the fifth c e n t u r y B.C., the status of border city. The proximity of the border is cmcial. The border has shifted at different times (owing to changed historical circumstances) bringing with it a redefinition o f i d e n t i t y at each move. The border has been, and in many respects still is, experienced as a source of permanent anxiety and displacement. The border, most importantly, acts in the literary realm a s a chronotope in the Bachtinian sense. ' The seemingly inescapable presence of t h e border is considered to be one of t h e distinctive features which are most ingrained in Triestine writing. 'Triestinità' (='Triestinness', the quality ofbeing Triestine) is however not merely confined to the presence of the border.2 Other ingredients of 'triestinità' include conspicuous references t o an outmoded Uterary tradition; an emphasis on details of t h e landscape or local topography; an interest in the local dialect; an eagerness to produce an 'epic'. I do not wish to dwell further on the many facets of 'triestinità', but intend to focus on a predilection for autobiography displayed by virtually all Triestine authors. My intention in this paper is to discuss the work of Stelio Mattioni, a little known contemporary Italian author from T r i e s t e . -

Death and Dying in the Works of Two Croatian Writers Iva Rineid-Lerga, M.A.pol. Amir Muzur, M.D., Ph.D. Rijeka University School of Medicine, Rijeka, Croatia ABSTRACT: The present paper elucidates the views upon death and dying expressed in the works of two Croatian writers, Dobrisa Cesarid and Miroslav Krleza. Both authors' concepts are materialistic, Cesari6's being more romantic and Krleza's more expressively cruel. Neither of the two mentions any religious element or fear. The paper concludes with a suggestion of an inquiry into the influence of the works by Cesaric and Krleza upon the ideas of modern elementary school and high school generations on death and dying. KEY WORDS: death; dying; bioethics; medicine and literature; Croatia. Despite the aggressive advancement of other communication media more appropriate to modern life style and tempo, literature has remained an important factor in human education. It is not usual to intermingle literature, and particularly fiction, with scientifically explored topics. However, in those rare areas where science still cannot offer any answer, as in thanatology, we must search for such answers and compile them from alternative sources, such as religion, philosophy, and literature. The experience of saying one’s goodbyes to the thin line of Dalmatia that has strung itself under the mountain’s crest, that viewed from the sea looks like Atlas’ brothers, is repeated, not without poetic chills, by dozens of travel writers. To define the cultural denominators of Zagora, the Dalmatian inland, is today a difficult task, as the anthropological fabric of the wider Dalmatian hinterland is still too often perceived through the utopian aspect of the Renaissance ideal, the cynicism of the Enlightenment, or the exaggeration of Romanticism and the 18th century national revival. After the fall of medieval feudalism, life here has started from scratch so many times - later observers have the impression that the local customs draw their roots from some untroubled prehistoric source in which the silence of the karst on the plateau towards Promina, behind Biokovo, the gurgling of the living waters of the Zrmanja, Krka, Čikola and Cetina Ri- vers, the quivering of grain on Petrovo, Hrvatac and Vrgorac Fields, on 4 Zagora the fat lands along Strmica and Sinj, create the ide- al framework for the pleasant countenance, joyous heart and sincere morality of the local population of which many have written, each from their own point of view: from abbot Fortis and Ivan Lovrić during the Baroque period, Dinko Šimunović and Ivan Raos not so long ago to Ivan Aralica and, in his own way, Miljenko Jergović today. -

I provide evidence of the emergence in their work of a distinctly transnational approach to literary writing (narrative in particular), founded on a creative way of addressing questions of estrangement, the body, and memory. I consider the work of three authors, who have yet to be fully acknowledged in the Italian literary landscape: the Italophone writers Jarmila Očkayová (1955-present; Italo- Slovakian) and Ingrid Beatrice Coman (1971-present; Italo-Romanian living in Malta), and Marisa Madieri (1938-1996; Italo-Hungarian from Istria), whose native language was Italian. It develops a novel framework that calls both primordialist and modernist approaches to nationalism and national identity into question before applying that framework to Croatia. In doing so it not only provides a new way of thinking about how national identity is formed and why it is so important but also closely examines 1990s Croatia in a unique way. An explanation of how Croatian national identity was formed in an abstract way by a historical narrative that traces centuries of yearning for a national state is given. The book goes on to show how the government, opposition parties, dissident intellectuals and diaspora change change groups offered alternative accounts of this narrative in order to The formation legitimise contemporary political programmes based on different visions of national identity.
