2009 Football Media Guide.Indd SHIRK FIELDat Musselman Stadium 1 23 4 5 6 Photos 1-6 track the evolution of Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium from natural grass to the state-of-the-art artifi cial surface pictured below. Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium State-of-the-art artifi cial turf has been installed at Musselman Stadium thanks to the generosity of Richard D. Shirk ’67, starting quarterback of the 1966 squad that won the Lambert Cup as the top College Division program in the East. Musselman Stadium retains its long-time name, but the fi eld itself has been named in recognition of the Shirk Family Foundation’s gift. “Artifi cial turf returns Musselman Stadium to the status of an elite venue at the NCAA Division III level,” said Director of Athletics David Wright. Shirk Field features an in-fi ll synthetic grass surface called AstroPlay, produced by makers of the original AstroTurf. Shirk – now the retired president and chief executive offi cer of Cerulean Companies, Inc., parent of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia – was a two-year football letterwinner. As a junior in 1965, he was a starting defensive back as well as the backup for 1985 Hall of Athletic Honor inductee and future NFL quarterback Jim Ward ’66. The next season, Shirk was one of three team captains who led the Bullets to a 7-2 record and the region’s top team honor. He was also a starting catcher on the Bullets base- ball team. “Dick Shirk’s wonderful gift couldn’t have come at a better time as we begin a major initiative to enhance athletic and recreational facilities at the College,” said former Vice President for College Re- lations Lex McMillan. “I hope Dick’s generosity will be an inspiration to many others who had similar strong experiences as athletes at Gettysburg College.” – Jim Hale TABLE OF CONTENTS/QUICK FACTS TABLE TABLE OF CONTENTS Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium ....................... The thrills and fascinations of his athletic exploits were chronicled by the mass media beginning in 1917 through the 1920s in a way that addressed the central themes of the mythic Great American Novel. Killinger’s personal and public life matched the cultural medley that defined the nation in the first quarter of the twentieth-century. His life plays outs as if it were a Horatio Alger novel, as the anxieties over turn-of-the- century immigration and urbanization, the uncertainty of commercializing formerly amateur sports, social unrest that challenged the status quo, and the resiliency of the individual confronting challenges of World War I, sport, and social alienation.

  • Tony Latone: the Hero of Pottsville
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 9, No. 10 (1987) TONY LATONE: THE HERO OF POTTSVILLE By Joe Zagorski He came out of the coal mines to play pro football – a shy but rugged individual whose actions did his talking for him. He was a true-to-life hero in a town where heroism meant making it through a 12-hour work day in the mines. His name was Tony Latone. During the 1920's, Latone played for the Pottsville Maroons of the National Football League, competing against athletes who'd earned glittering reputations on college gridirons. Although he never attended college, Tony was considered one of the league's top players. Remembering the balding, Lithuanian-Italian fullback, the late George Halas claimed: "If Latone had gone to college and played college ball, he would certainly have been one of the greatest pro players of all time." In the Anthracite Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania, mining provided rugged men in places like Pottsville, Frackville, and Shenandoah with a way to make a living. Pro football provided early century coal miners with a brief respite from their hard lives. Like most of the men, Latone entered the mines not because he wanted to but because he had to. His father died when Tony was 11-years-old, leaving the Latone family without a breadwinner. Tony went to work in the mines immrdiately after his father's death. The cold, the stench, and the pain crushed many; in Tony's case it turned him into a strong man. "That's how Tony got his strength," said Russ Zacko, the son of the Maroons' number one fan and the one who supplied the uniforms that gave the team its name.
