The Paradox of Interactive Fiction A New Approach to Imaginative Participation in Light of Interactive Fiction Experiences Thesis submitted for the degree of doctor in Philosophy at the University of Antwerp to be defended by Nele Van de Mosselaer Faculty of Arts – Department of Philosophy Supervised by prof. dr. Arthur Cools & prof. dr. Arthur Cools & prof. dr. Erik Myin Antwerpen 2020 Acknowledgements “My friends are my power!” – Sora, Kingdom Hearts (Square Enix 2002) Writing this dissertation on our interactions with the fictional worlds, characters, and objects represented in videogames was in many ways a fun endeavor. This is the case not only because it involved some actual videogame play, but also because I learned a lot in the last three years. I sincerely hope this dissertation also provides its readers with interesting insights, and helpfully contributes to the philosophy of fiction, which still has a remarkable focus on non-interactive works of literature, theatre, and film. At least in that way, my fearful encounters with zombies, stressful rescue missions of aliens, and countless deaths also gain some relevance outside of the respective fictional worlds in which they occurred. Although my interactions with videogame characters often inspired me to criticize established philosophical ideas on emotions, actions, and desires towards fiction, these characters were particularly unhelpful when it came to philosophical discussions, moral support, and constructive feedback on my manuscripts.

VIDEO GAMES: PERSPECTIVE, POINT-OF-VIEW, AND IMMERSION By LAURIE N. TAYLOR A THESIS PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2002 Copyright 2002 by Laurie N. Taylor To Pete ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I have many people to thank for this thesis: my friends, family, and teachers. I would also like to thank the University of Florida for encouraging the study of popular media, with a high level of critical theory and competence. This thesis also would not have been possible without the diligent help and guidance from my committee members, Dr. Terry Harpold and Dr. Jane Douglas. They are both brilliant and insightful in their approach to new media and their understanding of too many areas to list. This thesis would also not have been possible without my mom, who thought video games would cause eye strain and only agreed to let me play without time limits after I got straight A’s in fourth grade. She put me on the path to the academic study of video games. Thanks go to Colin for making me even more competitive by cheating when we played video games together and for being kind when I needed him. Thanks go to Eric for always keeping everything in perspective with his dry wit. And, thanks go again to Pete, for helping with research, discussion, and giving me love and support. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS page ACKNOWLEDGMENTS ................................................................................................. iv LIST OF FIGURES ..........................................................................................................

  • Why Do New Platform Technologies Fail? the Paradox of Technological Superiority
Why Do New Platform Technologies Fail? The Paradox of Technological Superiority Abstract Technological superiority provides more functional value for users, and is a critical dimension that challengers can leverage to dethrone incumbent technological platforms. We argue that while technological superiority might help accelerating adoption on one side of the market by driving early user adoption, it also causes greater innovation challenges for complementors who face time compression diseconomies due to the learning of the new technological environment. This limits their contribution of complementary products, which creates unfavorable expectations and slows down platform adoption. Eventually, these platforms fail. We develop this logic conceptually through a qualitative analysis of the US video game console industry. A number of studies have documented a puzzling result that it is often the inferior technology to become the dominant standard. In the context of platform markets, our study highlights that what is perceived as ‘superior’ from a technological perspective is in fact ‘inferior’ from an ecosystem perspective that accounts also for complementors. 1 “We recognize that our technical architecture has initially made Sega Saturn more difficult to develop for than other next generation formats, including the Playstation. But that is also why we know that Sega Saturn is a superior gaming platform”. – Tom Kalinske, CEO of Sega of America, August 1995 INTRODUCTION Many high-tech markets are nowadays organized around platform technologies, which provide value to final customers not only through their standalone functionalities, but also by allowing third-party firms to build upon and develop complementary products that extend the reach and value of the core platform technology to users (see Gawer 2014 for a review).

  • Sony's Battle for Video Game Supremacy John Sterman, Kahn Jekarl, Cate Reavis
07-046 Rev. December 8, 2011 Sony's Battle for Video Game Supremacy John Sterman, Kahn Jekarl, Cate Reavis As Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony Corporation, settled in for his flight back to Japan from New York, a number of pressing issues occupied his mind about Sony’s future. At the forefront, Sony’s next generation video game console, the PlayStation 3 (PS3), was set to launch worldwide on November 17, 2006, a mere week away. Despite PlayStation 2’s (PS2) dominance in the last generation of gaming consoles, Stringer understood that past successes were no guarantee of future success in the intensely competitive game industry. Microsoft had launched the first volley in the last console war by releasing the Xbox 360 in the fall of 2005. Within one year, almost 4 million Xbox 360s had been sold worldwide, giving Microsoft a significant head-start in the race for market dominance. Meanwhile, Nintendo, a competitor thought to be dead due to the lackluster sales of its previous console, the Nintendo Gamecube, had generated significant “buzz” around its new entry, the Nintendo Wii (pronounced “we”). Targeting more of a mainstream audience than Sony and Microsoft, the Wii, scheduled to launch just two days after the PS3, posed a serious threat to Sony’s market share, particularly due to its $249.99 retail price, half the price of the PS3. Stringer also knew that there was much more at stake than winning the console war. The next generation of the DVD market was at stake as well. In addition to being a gaming console, the PS3 was a Blu-Ray disc player.

  • Proposal for Video Games Around the World
Proposal for Video Games Around the World Mark J. P. Wolf, editor Communication Department Concordia University Wisconsin 12800 North Lake Shore Drive Mequon, WI 53097, USA phone: (262)243-4262 e-mail: [email protected] When the history of video games is told, it most often centers around video games in the United States, with perhaps a bit of Japanese and European video game history thrown in. But this, of course, is only a part of the whole story, and Video Games Around the World is the first book to attempt truly global coverage of the topic, with essays on video games in 35 different countries and regions, from every inhabited continent, most of which are written by scholars native to the areas discussed. While the essays include the video game history for their particular region, each also discusses concerns important to their culture of origin and how video games are informed by them, collectively examining the different ways video games interact with culture as well as educational and governmental institutions. As no other book on video games has such a broad, international scope, Video Games Around the World fills a niche and has no competitors, while at the same time the book has the potential to reach a worldwide audience, in not only game studies but other areas of cultural studies and technology studies, with a tone and style appropriate for an undergraduate audience. Although the content of the essays will vary considerably due to the variety of situations and contexts from one country to another, contributors have been asked to include such things as the history of video games in their country or region, the influence of national history on video games, the reception of foreign imports, domestic video game production and exports, indigenous video game culture, video game company profiles, video game content description, video game studies in the country or region, and the future of video games in the country or region.
