The warmth and generosity that so many in our Temple family have expressed toward us throughout this year have changed our lives. The number of people who welcomed yael and me soon after we arrived and offered us assistance was frankly staggering. while there remain many people for us to meet and become acquainted with, we often remark on the extraordinary support we have benefited from and the new friendships that our congregations has allowed us to launch and grow. I remain eager to meet members of our congregational family, and seize this opportunity to reiterate my invitation to all who are interested in meeting and speaking with me to reach out to our clergy office. we will schedule a meeting as soon as practicable. In addition to the blessings our Temple has bestowed upon us, formal moment of welcome and celebration have left us with memories for a lifetime. The first service of welcome last July, the High Holy days, and the entire Installation Shabbat are highlights of a year that we, and I especially, will always cherish. Throughout these past months, our family has gradually been settling in our new home and environment, creating new habits and routines, and whenever possible venturing out to explore this rich and fascinating city and all it has to offer. Our children are starting their second school year here, now in more familiar and comfortable settings. For all three, the Temple rituals of Friday night service, holiday celebrations, as well as learning and cultural events have turned the “new” Temple into a place of ease, safety, and deep connection. In late July, in a moment of fatigue and frustration while traveling overseas, one of the children cried and for the first time asked “when are we going home to Cleveland?” yael and I immediately looked at each other and knew: we will soon head back HOme. Beyond the personal welcome, embrace, growing friendships and ongoing support, The Temple has also offered us the opportunity to engage in important conversations, especially about our place and mission as Reform Jews and members of our Temple in the greater community today, the shifting and porous boundaries and strictures of Jewish identity and congregational engagement, and our relationship with Israel. Congregational conversations on these and related issues involved hundreds of our members during the Installation weekend, and these demonstrated the interest in and call for continued learning and exchange. The events of the last year have rendered these discussions all the more relevant and urgent. Last October, we witnessed a terrorist attack that cut short eleven lives in the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, and forever scarred so many others both there and throughout this country; In the winter, especially in the weeks following Representative Omar’s tweet about the “Benjamin’s,” we experienced another difficult chapter in the national debate surrounding Jewish support for Israel, anti-Israeli sentiment, and anti-Semitism in the public sphere; in April, on the last day of Passover, the Synagogue in Poway, California, was attacked. At the same time, mass shootings and various expressions of racial, religious, and ethnic hatred have proliferated throughout this land, and again claimed lives in el Paso and dayton recently. Throughout the past year, foundational values such as acceptance of the other, solidarity, and embrace of diversity, gender equality, and freedom of religion – values that are at the core of our American and Reform ethos, seem to have been challenged and undermined. Against the backdrop of rising ethno-religious hatred in general and anti-Semitism in particular, increasing polarization and division, and a decline in the commitment to certain core American values, our ability to articulate our mission and enhance our impact in the greater community become all the more important. As we prepare ourselves for the new year, we also plan to offer a series of opportunities to continue the conversations we started to engage in may, and to introduce new programmatic initiatives. yael and the children join me in thanking you for offering us the extraordinary opportunity to become part of this congregational family, and send each and every one of you our best wishes for a healthy, fulfilling, and productive end to 5779, and a good, sweet start to 5780. we look forward to seeing you during the High Holy days and celebrating the holiest moments of our calendar with you. may the next year bring us the blessings of greater love and understanding, dignity, and respect. with all good wishes, Rabbi Jonathan Cohen new AduLT LeARnIng OPPORTunITy wITH RABBI COHen! SHABBAT mORnIng TORAH STudy discussion led by Rabbi Klein Begins Saturday, September 7 at 9:15 AM PARSHA And POeTRy This year we return to a study of the Torah Portion of the week. There are 54 Torah portions in the Humash (The Torah, The Five Books of moses, The Pentateuch), one for each week of the year. The Torah as a whole features a wide variety of genres: story, law, ritual, genealogy, poetry, instruction, lament and more. In addition, there are several master themes that weave their way through the Torah as a whole. Among them are: the formation and fortunes of covenant between human beings and g-d, the [incomplete; incompletable?] journey from vulnerability (the patriarchal and matriarchal period) and slavery (in egypt) to security and freedom, the development of the ethical, ritual and historical foundations of community, the interplay between human assertion and divine command, the meaning and purpose of the historical process. The Torah’s stories are exciting, the laws and ethics challenging, and the leading personalities and their complex and deeply human relationships. we will begin each session with a brief reading and discussion of a biblical psalm. This means that over the many months of weekly Torah study, we will cover almost a third of the Psalter’s 150 psalms. After a consideration of the psalm, we will take up the Torah portion for that week. Since the new cycle (starting with the Creation Story at the beginning of genesis) does not commence this year until October 26, we will have plenty of time for an overview of the Bible: its formation; its structure, contents and high points; its many uses throughout our history; its “demand” for interpretation and for personal response from the reader. And then we will explore the final portions of The Book of deuteronomy. Bagels and coffee are served • All Are Welcome! • Open to long-time participants and newcomers alike. LIvIng ROOm LeARnIng discussion led by Rabbi Klein and Participants Meets the second Tuesday of each month, from 7:30 to 9:30 PM GOD IN THE QUR ’AN By JACK mILeS An opportunity for Temple members to learn together in a small group which meets in homes once a month for eight or nine Tuesday evenings. This year we will read God in the Qur’an by Jack miles. miles is the author of the highly regarded God: A Biography (The god of the Hebrew Scriptures), Christ: A Crisis in the Life of God (The god of the new Testament) and now, the third of miles’ considerations of god in the various scriptures, God in the Qur’an . Quoting from the book’s dust jacket: “who is Allah? what does He ask of those who submit to His teach - ings? In the spirit of his two earlier books, God , a trailblazing ‘biography’ of the protagonist of the Old Testament, and Christ , a brilliant portrait of the biblical Jesus, miles undertakes to answer these questions with his characteristic sensitivity, perspicacity, and prodigious command of the subject.” The first session will take place on Tuesday, September 10 at a home to be determined. The group is limited in size and there are only a few openings. To put your name on our waiting list, call Rabbi Klein’s assistant, Cyndi Wilson, at 216.455.1695 . www.FACeBOOK.COm/THeTemPLeTIFeReTHISRAeL page 7 THe BROTHeRHOOd IS FLIPPIng OveR OPenIng dAy OF TemPLe LeARnIng! THe TemPLe LeARnIng CenTeR Soak in the Words of Torah we are taught that, prior to studying words of Torah, we should begin with a beautiful blessing that ends with the words “Laasok B’divrei Torah” which is most often translated to engage in or to be busy with the words of Torah. One of my teachers and mentors Cantor ellen dreskin actually encourages us to play with the sound of the Hebrew words that encourage us to soak in the words of Torah. It's not about mastery. It's not about getting it right. It's not about proving others wrong. It's about having the willingness to immerse ourselves fully and deeply, sometimes seriously and sometimes playfully, in the lessons and teachings of our faith and tradition. One of the major ways to do this is by living in Jewish time by experiencing the holidays and the values they emphasize. This year all of our children in ganon gil, Sunday Learning, Shabbaton and the Teen Programs will have an opportunity to soak in the Torah through more focused attention to a handful of holidays and mitzvot (commandments) associated with them. Through experiential lessons and activities, we will celebrate the holidays together as a community and also engage in social action projects that emphasize the most important values in these holiday celebrations. There will be opportunities to engage in this meaningful learning during our formal learning times, and you will also be invited to join us for congregation-wide celebrations. In addition, our Sunday families will have an opportunity to join us for a grade level breakfast once during the year as a way to get to know other families, too. By building and strength - ening relationships, we hope it will be more meaningful to soak in the words of Torah. Our entire Learning Center Team wishes you a year of blessing and growth. – Rabbi Stacy Schlein, director of Learning

Comic Book Papercuts by Isaac Brynjegar d- Bialik On dISPLAy In THe HARTZmARK CenTeR Men of Steel and Women of Valor is an art exhibition made for Cleveland – literally. Isaac Brynjegard-Bialik created 15 new original works specifically for The Temple. Isaac has been working closely with Sue Koletsky, museum director, for months to bring these pieces to the congregation as our first exhibit of the new year. Blending pop culture and traditional Jewish narratives in seamless graphic compositions made of cut-up comic books, Isaac’s work is emblematic of the 21st century’s mash-up culture. Isaac includes comics in his work to draw parallels between comic book mythologies and religious traditions, delving into the stories that make us human. This exhibition focuses heavily on Superman, created in Cleveland in the 1930s by two Jews, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, portraits of whom are included in the show. Cut-up Superman comics from the past 90 years are incorporated into the artwork. At the heart of the exhibition is a series of large-scale portraits, as a nod to the Jewish custom of inviting guests into one’s sukkah during the fall festival of Sukkot. Isaac has turned comics featuring Superman and Lois Lane, dare - devil and elektra, the Fantastic Four and more, into the biblical patriarchs and matriarchs: Abraham and Sarah; Isaac and Rebekah; and Jacob, Leah, and Rachel. “The comics are a commentary on the stories of our ancestors,” says Isaac. “Jacob’s story involves the hiding of one’s identity, and the discovery of one’s true self, so his portrait is made of Clark Kent, Superman’s alter ego and the mask he wears.” The exhibition also includes portraits of golda meir, Israel’s first female prime minister, and Sally Preisand, America’s first female rabbi. The portraits share the walls with landscapes of Jerusalem, stories of fire and water and clouds, and explorations of the mishnah – all made out of cut-up comic books. Isaac has shown his papercuts in galleries across the united States, and his work is in the hands of collectors around the world. Isaac was the artist-in-residence at the 2013 uRJ Biennial, has written on art and Judaism for the CCAR Journal, maintains an annual summer residency at uRJ Camp newman, and is the co-founder, with his wife, Rabbi Shawna Brynjegard-Bialik, of Paper midrash. Bonnie notes, “In the last several years I have been working on abstract paintings that are all about color, shape and line. There is no reference by Bonnie dolin to any form of realism. That was a big departure for me as I had been doing pastels and paintings of cityscapes and landscapes. It began when a cityscape I was working on, gradually became more abstract and less detailed. That work sent me in a new direction and I eliminated all reference to realism. I found I enjoyed working that way – it afforded me the freedom to be more creative.” Bonnie graduated from The Cleveland Institute of Art in painting and has a mFA from Kent State university. Her awards include an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artists Award, a three month Fellowship from the State of Ohio to paint at the Fine Arts work Center in Provincetown mA, and a u.S. State department distinction to visit artists in moldova. She has been show - ing her painting and pastel work throughout Cleveland and Ohio and her work is represented in galleries, museums and private collections including the Cleveland museum of Art, The Progressive Corporation collection and the Pin Ball by Bonnie dolin Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland collection.
