Tapolca Basin and Region West-Hungary For hundreds of years poets, novelists and painters have been calling the Badacsony and its vicinity the most beautiful landscape in Hungary. One of the greatest achievements of the Hungarian nature conservation movement is that the basalt quarries opened here in 1903 have finally been closed down. The famous playwrighter Ferenc Herczeg made powerful efforts in the Upper House in the 1920s to have them closed. A press campaign was also launched, but the last quarries where only finally closed in 1964. Those on the Gulács and Tóti Hills were abandoned at the end of World War II and in the early 1950s. The Szentgyörgy and Csobánc Hills are more fortunate: their basalt was not found suitable for building purposes, so there are only small wounds on their flanks. Tapolca Basin, map – magnifies The monadnocks are peculiarly shaped results of the volcanic activity towards the end of the Pannonian Age. At the edges of the Csobánc, Szentgyörgy and Badacsony Hills, which from a distance resemble coffins, typical formations of solidifying basalt: the basalt columns can be seen. The most beautiful examples are the Stone Gate of Badacsony and the basalt organs of the Szentgyörgy Hill. At the slopes of Badacsony, huge rock-glaciers and block fields are to be found, where the large-leaf linden and the mahaleb cherry forest can just establish themselves. The picturesque cones of the Gulács, Tóti and Vár Hills resemble sugar loafs. The basalt mountains of the area are not only unique and picturesque geological relics, they are also the habitat of many rare plants and animals.

  • Geologica Hungarica. Series Geologica
A REVIEW by J. H aas Lying on the southwestern margin of the Bakony, between the Little Hungarian Plain (Kis alföld) and the Tapolca Basin, where mountains and plain meet, Sümeg is a favourite touristic highlight abounding with cultural and historical monuments of the Lake Balaton region (Fig. 1). Few of the visitors to and even of the residents of Sümeg are aware of the opulence with which this region has preserved the records of the geological past, the traces and marks left over by geological phenomena. The diversity of geological formations is worthy of attention not only from scientific viewpoint, but some of them can be exploited as raw materials for the building industry and aluminium industry, proving eventually suitable for being used even to fuel future power plants. As evidenced by archeo logical finds, the Mogyorós-domb to the south of the town was the scene of an extensive flint mining already in prehistoric times. Geoscientists have for a long time been aware of the geological significance of the area. In his travelogue of Hungary published in 1825, Beud ant, the famous French geologist, did already mention some formations from the study area, describing limestone beds with Hippurites and Radiolites from the vicinity of Sümeg. The first regular geological survey was carried out in the 1870’s. On the 1:144,000-scale map of János B öckh published in 1875 the geological features and the major formations of the Mesozoic block of Sümeg were already well outlined. The discovery of the Upper Cretaceous coal seams of Ajka also falls in the fifties of the last century and this development pushed the exploration of the Sümeg area, with its geology similar in many respects to the former, into the fore.

Abstract. The desei.[ theory of the basin evolution was first sounded by L. Ló c zy Sen. (1913) and J . C h o 1 n o ky ( 1918). Their hypothesis was based primarily on geomorphological features jndicating desert conditions. Several geomorphologisls, geologists and paleontologists set up working hypothe- sis on geomorphologic evolution during this deserŁ period. Recently ii has been held that the desei.tiri- cation of Pannonian Basin corresponds to the Messinian Salinity Crisis. Until the end of ihe `90s only geomorphological features and mammal fossils had been known as evidence to the long-debated dry-warm semidesert climate in [he Carpa[hian Basin following ihe filling up of the Pannonian Lake. Ą comparison of samples wi[h deserl varnish collected NE of Budapest (Mogyoród si[e), Tapolca Ba- s.in, Keszthely Hills and Hassi Zegdou (Algeria), Maktar (Tunesia) supports the desert theory. Our in- \.estigation meihods on desert varnish were X-ray fluoi.escence (XRF) analyses and thermal analyses {TG, DTG). Our opinion is that during drier climatic periods i.e. Late Miocene, Early Pliocene desert cli- mate as well as Pleistocene glaciations the material iransport of the wirids played an importanŁ role.

Travellers start to feel the harmonious blend of past and present at the moment of their arrival. Historic traditions play a crucial role in the life and attitude of the inhabitants of the town and of those who were regular visitors. The town is a tourist attraction for ages and it became a so-called healing resort in 1971 when the acidulous spring water of the town was officially accepted as healing water. Balatonfüred achieved the title of International Town of Grapes and Wine from 1987 on. The town is mainly known by its climate which is very similar to the Mediterranean and its spring waters containing carbonic acid. Balatonfüred and its surrounding settlements lie in the so-called Balaton Riviera . This expression refers to the special micro-climate prevailing at this location. The town is infinitely rich in historic memorial places. These were mostly renovated and restored. It may happen that some of these have been appointed different roles nowadays than their original one but they are part of its cultural life anyway. There are numerous villas and mansions in the town that contributed to the special beauty of Balatonfüred and made the town famous in faraway places of the Earth.
