But the widened scope needn’t take in only the majestic, as conjured up in lofty concepts such as planetarity or world-historical totality. Sometimes the scale of world can produce a multifocal optic that helps us pay renewed attention to the literary commonplace. Taking script, the most basic component of literature, as one of the lenses through which to view the world literary landscape, this chapter will examine if, and how, ideas about writing can influence both our close and distant reading. Script is something that usually escapes notice under traditional classifications of literature, which organize subjects along linguistic borders, whether as English, French, or Spanish, or as Anglophone, Francophone, or Hispanophone studies. The construction of literatures by discrete language categories supports a wide-spread view that differences between languages are not just a matter of different phonemes, lexemes and grammars but of distinct ways of conceiving, apprehending and relating to the world. This was a view that was developed into a political stance in Europe in the nineteenth century.1 It posited a language as an embodiment of cultural or national distinctiveness, and a literature written in a national language as the sovereign expression of a particular worldview. One of the facets this stance obscured was the script in which the texts were written. -

The name was assigned by the French epigraphist JeanVincent Scheil in the early 20th century, who believed it to be the predecessor of a ‘proper’ Elamite script, which would have been used for recording the Elamite language, simply on account of the location of the tablets at Susa, which was the capital city of Elam. While no ‘proper’ descendent of the script has been identified, scholars continue to use the name ‘ProtoElamite’ as a matter of convention (Dahl 2012: 2). ProtoElamite is believed to have been developed from an accounting system used in Mesopotamia, in a manner similar to the development of ‘ProtoCuneiform’. -
On the Origin of Alphabetic Writing

Wilson-Wright Radboud University, Nijmegen November 2019 On the Origin of Alphabetic Writing Over the past few years, several scholars have advanced new theories regarding the origin of the alphabetic writing. Douglas Petrovich (2016) and Paul LeBlanc (2017), for example, both argue that the ancient Israelites invented the alphabet during their sojourn in Egypt.1 And in a 2019 article for Bible and Interpretation, Robert Holmstedt suggests that the inhabitants of Byblos developed the alphabet from the earlier Byblos Script, an undeciphered writing system found at the Phoenician city of Byblos. As part of this article, he articulates several important questions about the invention of the alphabetic writing that should guide all future inquiries into the topic: Who invented the alphabet? Where did they come from? Were they familiar with any of the other writing systems used in the ancient Near East? In this article, I will review the inscriptional and historical data that can help us answer these questions, evaluate Holmstedt’s arguments, and present my own theory of alphabetic origins. I. Review of the Evidence The earliest alphabetic inscriptions furnish the primary evidence regarding the invention of the alphabet. These inscriptions come from the Egyptian sites of Serabit el-Khadem and Wadi el-Ḥôl (see map). In 1905, Sir Flinders Petrie (1906: 129–30) discovered ten early alphabetic inscriptions while excavating the Egyptian temple and turquoise mining facility at Serabit el-Khadem. Subsequent excavations at Serabit el-Khadem—from 1920s to the 2000s—have uncovered an additional 37 early alphabetic inscriptions (Lindblom 1931; Butin 1932; Starr and Butin 1936; Gerster 1961: pl. -

It has been not infrequently mentioned by Semitists that a few graphemes of the West Semitic consonantal alphabet had been multifunctional. This is witnessed, in particular, by transcriptions of Biblical names in Septuagint, Demotic transcriptions of Aramaic as well as by the Arabic alphabet, Aramaic by its origin, which twen- ty two graphemes were ultimately developed into twenty eight ones through inventing additional diacritics. The oldest firmly deciphered and convincingly interpreted variety of the West Semitic consonantal script was employed in Ugarit as early as the 13th century BC. Being contemporaneous with the epoch of the invention of the West Semitic consonantal script the most significant evidence is provided with Se- mitic words occasionally transcribed in Egyptian papyri from the New Kingdom. Examples collected (J. Hoch) demonstrate that one and the same Semitic consonant could be recorded variously with different Egyptian consonants used; even more crucial is that various Semitic consonants could be recorded with the same Egyptian one. E. de Rougé was the first one to state that the immediate proto- types of Semitic letters were to be sought among the Hieratic char- acters. W. Helck and K.-Th. Zauzich determined that the West Se- mitic alphabet comprised only those characters which had been used in “Egyptian syllabic writing”. Summarizing philological and histori- cal evidence does allow us to conclude that the Canaanite consonantal alphabet developed as a local adaptation of the Egyptian scribal prac- tice of recording non-Egyptian words. -

COLLESS [email protected] Massey University Palmerston North, New Zealand Summary: The Origin of the Alphabet Since 2006 the discussion of the origin of the Semitic alphabet has been given an impetus through a hypothesis propagated by Orly Goldwasser: the alphabet was allegedly invented in the 19th century BCE by illiterate Semitic workers in the Egyptian turquoise mines of Sinai; they saw the picturesque Egyptian inscriptions on the site and borrowed a number of the hieroglyphs to write their own language, using a supposedly new method which is now known by the technical term acrophony. The main weakness of the theory is that it ignores the West Semitic acrophonic syllabary, which already existed, and contained most of the letters of the alphabet. -

DRAFT Unicode technical note NN Auxiliary character decompositions for supporting Hangul Kent Karlsson 2006-09-24 1 Introduction The Hangul script is very elegantly designed. There are just a small number of letters (28, plus a small number of variant letters introduced later, but the latter have fallen out of use) and even a featural design philosophy for the shapes of the letters. However, the incarnation of Hangul as characters in ISO/IEC 10646 and Unicode is not so elegant. In particular, there are many Hangul characters that are not needed, for precomposed letter clusters as well as precomposed syllable characters. The precomposed syllables have arithmetically specified canonical decompositions into Hangul jamos (conjoining Hangul letters). But unfortunately the letter cluster Hangul jamos do not have canonical decompositions to their constituent letters, which they should have had. This leads to multiple representations for exactly the same sequence of letters. There is not even any compatibility-like distinction; i.e. no (intended) font difference, no (intended) width difference, no (intended) ligaturing difference of any kind. They have even lost the compatibility decompositions that they had in Unicode 2.0. There are also some problems with the Hangul compatibility letters, and their proper compatibility decompositions to Hangul jamo characters. Just following their compatibility decompositions in UnicodeData.txt does not give any useful results in any setting. In this paper and its two associated datafiles these problems are addressed. Note that no changes to the standard Unicode normal forms (NFD, NFC, NFKD, and NFKC) are proposed, since these normal forms are stable for already allocated characters. -

First, the place of writing among the various systems of human inter communication is discussed. This is followed by four Tchapters devoted to the descriptive and comparative treatment of the various types of writing in the world. The sixth chapter deals with the evolution of writing from the earliest stages of picture writing to a full alphabet. The next four chapters deal with general problems, such as the future of writing and the relationship of writing to speech, art, and religion. Of the two final chapters, one contains the first attempt to establish a full terminology of writing, the other an extensive bibliography. The aim of this study is to lay a foundation for a new science of writing which might be called grammatology. While the general histories of writing treat individual writings mainly from a descriptive-historical point of view, the new science attempts to establish general principles governing the use and evolution of writing on a comparative-typological basis.
