Hale Spring 2016 Illusion and Instrument: Problems of Mimetic Characterization in Dostoevsky and Tolstoy © 2016 By Chloe Susan Liebmann Kitzinger Abstract Illusion and Instrument: Problems of Mimetic Characterization in Dostoevsky and Tolstoy by Chloe Susan Liebmann Kitzinger Doctor of Philosophy in Slavic Languages and Literatures University of California, Berkeley Professor Irina Paperno, Chair This dissertation focuses new critical attention on a problem central to the history and theory of the novel, but so far remarkably underexplored: the mimetic illusion that realist characters exist independently from the author’s control, and even from the constraints of form itself. How is this illusion of “life” produced? What conditions maintain it, and at what points does it start to falter? My study investigates the character-systems of three Russian realist novels with widely differing narrative structures — Tolstoy’s War and Peace (1865–1869), and Dostoevsky’s The Adolescent (1875) and The Brothers Karamazov (1879–1880) — that offer rich ground for exploring the sources and limits of mimetic illusion. I suggest, moreover, that Tolstoy and Dostoevsky themselves were preoccupied with this question. Their novels take shape around ambitious projects of characterization that carry them toward the edges of the realist tradition, where the novel begins to give way to other forms of art and thought. -

Shattering Fragility: Illness, Suicide, and Refusal in Fin-De-Siècle Viennese Literature Abstract How fragile is the femme fragile and what does it mean to shatter her fragility? Can there be resistance or even strength in fragility, which would make it, in turn, capable of shattering? I propose that the fragility embodied by young women in fin-de-siècle Vienna harbored an intentionality that signaled refusal. A confluence of factors, including psychoanalysis and hysteria, created spaces for the fragile to find a voice. These bourgeois women occupied a liminal zone between increased access to opportunities, both educational and political, and traditional gender expectations in the home. Although in the late nineteenth century the femme fragile arose as a literary and artistic type who embodied a wan, ethereal beauty marked by delicacy and a passivity that made her more object than authoritative subject, there were signs that illness and suicide could be effectively employed to reject societal mores. -

Jewish Fates: Richard Fuchs and Karl Wolfskehl By Friedrich Voit After three years of providing a varied programme of theatre, opera, concerts and lectures the Jüdische Kulturbund in Deutschland (Jewish cultural League in Germany) invited the leaders of its branches to a national conference in Berlin for stocktaking and planning of the future direction of the League. The Kulturbund was founded in 1933, a few months after the Nazi regime had come to power which began to purge the theatres, orchestras and other cultural institution from their „non-Arian‟ Jewish members. Almost overnight hundreds of Jewish actors, singers, musicians etc. found themselves without employment. Two of them having been dismissed from their positions at the operatic stages in Berlin, the production assistant Kurt Baumann and the conductor Kurt Singer, proposed a new organisation serving the Jewish community in Berlin and other major cities where most of the Jewish minority lived. They realized that the roughly 175.000 Jews, most of them well educated and with an active interest in the arts, would provide a big enough audience to support their own cultural institutions (theatre, opera, and orchestras). More importantly they also gained the support of the Nazi authorities, especially of Hans Hinkel, the newly appointed head of the Prussian Theatre commission. Their very particular kind of intensely colorful, expressive paint- ing, using a dense formal idiom that was moving toward abstraction, was based on a unique spiritual approach that opened up completely new possibilities for expression, ranging in style from a height- ened realism to abstraction. -

Ihrer beider Leben weist Ähnlichkeiten auf, die über das übliche Maß von Zeitgenos- senschaft und ähnlicher Profession hinausgehen: Beide sind im Dezember geboren, beide wählen, aus dem Ausland stammend (Österreich/Tschechien bzw. Schweiz), München als Ausgangspunkt für ihre künstlerische Entwicklung, Rilke kommt 1896 in die Stadt, Klee zwei Jahre darauf, 1898. Rilke heiratet 1901, Klee verlobt sich im Jahr darauf, beide haben ein Kind (in der Einstellung zur Familie unterscheiden sie sich jedoch krass: Während Rilke sich schon nach einem Jahr von seiner Familie wieder trennt, benutzt Klee die Bürgerlich- keit der Ehe als Schutzschild, betreut die ersten Jahre als malender Hausmann den Sohn, während seine Frau mit Klavierstunden Geld verdient). Beide sind von der Kunst Cezan- nes sehr beeindruckt, Rilke 1907, Klee 1909. Beide reisen nach Kairuan, wieder ist Rilke der frühere (1910/11, Klee 1914). Beide lesen mit großer Zustimmung Worringers Buch ‚Abstraktion und Einfühlung‘ (1908 erschienen), sie bewegen sich in München in densel- ben geistigen Kreisen, haben gemeinsame Bekannte (z.B. Hausenstein, Wolfskehl). Beide schließlich sterben in der Schweiz, die sie als Exil und Heimat wählen an einer seltenen Autoimmunkrankheit (Rilke 1926 mit 51 Jahren an Blutkrebs, Klee 1940 mit 60 Jahren an Sklerodermie, wobei die Art der Krankheit ein Spiegel ihrer jeweiligen Lebensführung ist: die Exaltiertheit des Gefühls bei Rilke, die Zurücknahme und Verschlossenheit des Gefühls bei Klee). -
