Also known as Vale Tudo, No Holds Barred (NHB), Cage Fighting, Ultimate Fighting, Pride Fighting, Sougo Kakutogi Focus Various Hardness Full contact Olympic sport No Mixed martial arts (MMA), popularly known as cage fighting or ultimate fighting is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of other combat sports, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of both striking as well as grappling techniques, both while standing and while on the ground. Such competitions allow fighters of different backgrounds to compete. The roots of modern mixed martial arts can be traced back to various mixed style contests that took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. The combat sport of Vale Tudo that had developed in Brazil from the 1920s was brought to the United States by the Gracie family in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Professional MMA events had also been held in Japan by Shooto starting back in 1989. In due course the more dangerous Vale Tudo style bouts of the early UFCs were made safer with the implementation of additional rules, leading to the popular regulated form of MMA seen today. Originally promoted as a competition with the intention of finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations,

GAUL IV* The Ultimate Fighting Championship (“UFC”) is the premier mixed martial arts (“MMA”) promotion in the world and is the most recent athletic organization to attain a dominant market share that arguably constitutes a monopoly or monopsony. Antitrust law prohibits organizations from restraining trade or intentionally stamping out market place competition to attain or maintain monopoly power. The UFC’s behavior has raised significant concerns about competition in two separate markets: the MMA Promotional Market and Elite MMA Labor Market. While the MMA Promotional Market appears more competitive than it has ever been, the Elite MMA Labor Market has seen significant reductions in competition.

‘THE @UFC AND THIRD WAVE FEMINISM? WHO WOULDA THOUGHT?’: GENDER, FIGHTERS, AND FRAMING ON TWITTER by ALLYSON QUINNEY B.A., The University of British Columbia, 2012 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF JOURNALISM in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) October 2015 © Allyson Quinney, 2015 Abstract Most professional sports, such as hockey, tennis, and basketball, separate men’s and women’s sports leagues. In 2013, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) disrupted this pattern by showcasing its first women’s mixed martial arts (MMA) fight in a once male-only fight league. While the UFC’s inclusion of female fighters is a step forward for gender equality, the change does not come without issues. This essay focuses on the framing of female UFC fighters on Twitter over a four year period. Through an intersectional feminist analysis, it examines how Twitter users frame female fighters’ bodies in relation to gender, race, class, and sexuality. It argues that there is an imbalance in attention paid to female fighters in regards to gender, race, class, and sexuality, and this constructs contradictory messaging about feminism, female fighters’ bodies, and the UFC on Twitter. ii Preface This thesis is original, unpublished, independent work by the author, Allyson Quinney. In 2013, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) disrupted this pattern by showcasing its first women’s mixed martial arts (MMA) fight in a once male-only fight league. It’s Time for the UFC to Offer Individual Fights for Purchase Nick Cornor Abstract A bedrock principle of U.S. Copyright law normally dictates that when a person steals your original work of authorship, a court should issue an injunc- tion and require the violator to pay damages. For centuries this principle has sufficed; however, a lack of deep-pocket defendants and continued lobbying efforts by internet service providers have made this principle untenable when applied to illegal online streaming. This is especially true for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a mixed martial arts promoter that has seen its live broadcasts pirated over the internet at an alarming rate, thereby threaten- ing the bulk of its revenue. This Comment advocates that the UFC unbundle its current pay- per-view business model in favor of charging market-based prices for each individual fight. The primary benefit of this approach includes increased rev- enue for the UFC by enticing consumers away from illegal online streaming with lower prices. Potential adjacent benefits include reforming fighter com- pensation schemes, incentivizing fighters to promote their own individual fights, easing controversies regarding unionization efforts by the fighters, and providing the UFC with greater marketing data.

  • Cage Fighting Is Not a Sport: Fact Sheet
Cage Fighting is Not a Sport: Fact Sheet I. Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, is a spectacle of violence in which severe bodily harm and humiliation are possible outcomes. Unlike established martial arts such as judo, MMA, whose most prominent promoter is the Las Vegas- based Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), is a hybrid of traditional and non-traditional fight maneuvers (e.g., boxing, kicking, kneeing, elbowing, wrestling and strangling) that do not fit into a comprehensive system of self-defense. a. Punches and elbows to grounded opponents are not prohibited under the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), a uniform set of rules for professional cage fighting events in the United States.1 b. The types of strikes that are permitted in cage fighting in the U.S. include blows with hands, feet, knees and elbows.2 In the UFC, cage fighters have knocked out opponents with punches or kicks to the head.3 According to a 2006 study, facial laceration was the most common injury in professional MMA competitions, accounting for nearly half of all injuries (47.9%) followed by hand (13.5%), nose (10.4%) and eye (8.3%).4 c. In the UFC, a cage fighter is allowed to deliver a flurry of strikes to a grounded opponent, which is known as “ground and pound.”5 By contrast, punching and other strikes are prohibited in international judo competitions. d. Competitors in MMA are allowed to quit a fight by tapping the ground or the opponent with their hands. This is known in MMA as “tapping out” or a “tapout.”6 However, fighters who tap out also lose the contest, which can be a blow to their reputation and earnings.
