Evanston occupies 8.55 square miles and is located just north of the City of Chicago, along the shore of Lake Michigan. Twelve miles from Chicago's Loop, Evanston is served by Metra's commuter rail line (formerly the Chicago and North Western Railway) and Chicago Transit Authority buses and trains from Chicago. The major north-south arteries connecting Chicago and Evanston are Sheridan Road, Chicago Avenue, and Ridge Avenue. Located just north of Evanston's central business district, the Northeast Evanston Historic District is predominantly single-family

Garc´ıa,PhD.2 1Graduate Research Assistant 2Professor and Director, Ven Te Chow Hydrosystems Laboratory July 2014 Executive Summary Purpose and Scope In the Chicago Area Waterways (CAWS) drainage area, there are 255 Combined Sewer Outfalls (CSO) owned by the City of Chicago, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC), and surrounding municipalities. Chicago-area CSOs discharging to the CAWS currently drain away from Lake Michigan during most wet weather conditions. Consequently, the majority of CSO events in the Chicago metropolitan area do not affect Lake Michigan. However, the gates at the waterway controlling works that separate the Chicago-area waters and Lake Michigan are opened during certain heavy rainfall events in order to prevent local flooding. At the same time, there is a growing interest in controlling the potential migration of invasive species towards the Great Lakes.

    D.Baciu, Chicago School, OSF Preprints June 2, 2020, pg. 2 Introduction Among the architectural historians of the modern movement, Sigfried Giedion was the most internationally active. Born in Prague to Swiss-Jewish parents, Giedion studied in Vienna and Munich, where he earned his doctorate under Heinrich Wölfflin. 1 A luminary in early modern art history, Giedion's mentor taught methods for the com- parative study art. Wölfflin juxtaposed artworks taken from different time periods and geographical settings, evaluating formal similarities and differences between them. This comparative approach went hand in glove with applied psychology that added a new, scientific perspective to art and architectural history. Giedion later adapted juxta- positions of images from in-class lecturing to print publications,2 and he found his own voice as spokesman in a network of artists and architects who united art and science in the service of cultural transformation. The scientific worldviews of the Vienna school together with Bauhaus design and Gestalt psychology formed some of the greatest achievements of this midcentury European vanguard that surrounded the enthusiastic Czech-Swiss historian. Immigrating to the United States in 1938 at age 50, Giedion expected to publish a global history of architecture and industrialization, tentatively titled "The Life of Archi- tecture."3 When weaving American architecture into his narrative, he emphasized the importance of the Chicago school as a future-oriented movement in the late 19th cen- tury. The Chicago school was one of the happy moments in American architecture, in no other country could be seen in the 15 years between 1879-1893 such a vigor to push into the future as shown by the Chicago school.4 These laudatory lines, used by Giedion to open a symposium held at New York University (NYU) in 1939, certainly attracted and pleased the general audience, but they also entangled Giedion into a dispute that he may not have fully foreseen.

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, a fraternal organization, launched a competition to design a fitting memorial to its 1000+ fallen members. Marquette University, 2010 Although most reaches of the Chicago Waterway System (CWS) meet the General Use Water Quality Standards a high percentage of the time, dissolved oxygen (DO) standards are not met in the CWS during some periods for both the WYs 2001 and 2003 as representative of wet and dry years. Several methods were used to solve this problem; however, they were inadequate for achieving the proposed DO standards. Therefore, a method of integrating the alternative DO remediation methods into one integrated strategy for improving water quality is considered in this study. The main purpose of this study is the application of the DUFLOW model to improve DO concentrations in the CWS during the WYs 2001 and 2003. Two sets of DO standards needed to be achieved: 90 and 100% compliance with the IEPA’s proposed DO standards, and the MWRDGC’s proposed DO standards.

    Allen Memorial Art Museum Teacher Resource Packet – Frank Lloyd Wright House, 1949 Frank Lloyd Wright (American, 1867 – 1959) Weltzheimer/Johnson House, 1949 Redwood, brick, glass, concrete American architect Frank Lloyd Wright is regarded as one of the greatest modern architects, with a career spanning over fifty years. He is best known for his Prairie Style homes, which emphasized a long, horizontal line and organic incorporation into the surroundings, inspired by the prairie of the Midwest. Through the course of his life, Wright became equally well known for his personal life as his architecture. Biography Frank Lloyd Wright was born in 1867 in rural Wisconsin, the son of a lawyer and a teacher. Dying in 1959 at the age of 91, he was regarded as one of the most prolific and acclaimed architects of all time. His early childhood was marked by his parents’ divorce in 1885, after which his mother lavished the young Wright with affection. He left his home to attend the University of Wisconsin, Madison for two terms before leaving for Chicago to try his luck with architecture. His earliest experience once there was with the architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee, an architect of religious buildings. Perhaps one of Wright’s most influential early working experiences was with Adler and Sullivan firm. Louis Sullivan was one of the most respected architects of the day, known for his mysticism and towering steel skyscrapers. Terming the phrase, “form follows function,” Sullivan was a direct influence on Wright’s development of his famous Prairie Style. Wright in 1947, the same year construction began on the W/J House Wright was deeply dedicated to the idea of an ‘organic’ architecture which would integrate nature, man, and design into a unified and interrelated final product.
