    Red Line South Track Renewal project Cermak-Chinatown to 95th Street Spring/Summer 2013 CTA is planning to rebuild the South Red Line from just north of Cermak-Chinatown to 95th Street. The work will benefit Red Line riders for decades to come—through faster travel times, increased reliability, and spruced-up stations with a variety of improvements. As part of the project, in Spring/Summer 2013 the Red Line will be completely closed from Roosevelt Road to 95th Street for five months. CTA will offer several alternative travel options during this closure to minimize the impact on customers as much as possible (see other side of this page). Cermak- Faster travel times Better reliability Improved stations Chinatown Project scope CTA will replace all of the ties, rails, third rails, drainage system and ballast (the stone material that holds the ties in place) in the Red Line right of way. Additionally, all nine stations along the Dan Ryan Branch will be improved, from basic enhancements like new paint and better lighting Sox-35th to additional customer amenities, like new benches and bike racks. New elevators will be installed at the Garfield, 63rd and 87th Street stations—making the entire South Red Line fully accessible. 47th Garfield Why is this work necessary? The Dan Ryan Branch was built in 1969, when Richard Nixon was in the White House, a gallon 63rd of gas cost 35 cents and Gale Sayers won the NFL rush- ing title. The original tracks are well beyond their expected Dan Ryan terminal dedication 1969 lifespan, and call for a complete replacement.

    FACT SHEET: Transit Light Rail Speed and Safety Enhancements Project Description The Light Rail Speed and Safety Enhancements study has reviewed a series of speed and safety features designed to enhance light rail operations and efficiency. This study has developed conceptual designs and recommendations for safety, speed, and reliability enhancements in three study areas: one along North First Street, one in Downtown San Jose, and one comprised of key, low-speed zones and specific spot locations throughout the system. Project Goals • Enhance safety, mobility, and access for all travelers • Improve travel times and reliability for transit passengers • Increase transit ridership • Support community input and adopted land use and mobility policies Current Activities • Advancing project definition, technical studies, and conceptual design • Stakeholder outreach • Advancing signal timing changes on North First Street • Final design of a pilot project in Downtown San Jose • Securing additional funding North First Street The project area is along North First Street between Interstate 880 (I-880) and Tasman Drive. Light rail currently operates at 35 mph in the median of this stretch of North First Street which includes eight light rail stations and over twenty intersections. The project is focused on transit signal priority and traffic signal programming. Green lights will hold as the light rail approaches the intersection which will improve travel time. Traffic signals will be reprogrammed to adjust timing based on traffic patterns. This will reduce the time a green light is held after vehicles and pedestrians have crossed an intersection. The removal of left turns on Tasman at North First Street will reduce wait time for light rail, vehicles, and pedestrians.

The only man who could accomplish the difficult task of bringing a common downtown terminal to the Chicago elevated rapid transit system, which used to end at a separate terminal for each company, was Charles Tyson Yerkes. He had enough political deftness and power to convince store owners to sign consent forms allowing construction of the overhead structures on their streets (although alley routes were briefly contemplated). Though it was difficult — two segments had to be obtained under the names of existing "L" companies while for the two other legs, two companies, the Union Elevated Railroad and the Union Consolidated Elevated Railroad, had to be created — Yerkes managed to coordinate it all. What does this project cost and how is it funded? A. The $2.1 billion RPM Phase One project is funded through a combination of federal and local funds including: $957 in federal Core Capacity funds (FTA); a federal $125 million Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) grant from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP); $622 million in Transit TIF (tax-increment financing) funds from the City of Chicago; and CTA financing. Q. Are updates and notices available in languages other than English? A. Yes. We regularly provide subtitled recordings of past community meetings in Chinese, Spanish and Vietnamese, as well as translated flyers distributed to local community organizations. Additionally, we offer live translation services for public meetings upon request. Q. When will the block-by-block meetings happen? A. They will be scheduled for April 2021. We will notify the public when the dates are finalized. Q. When will the project start? A. Stage A construction is expected to begin Spring 2021. Once construction schedules are finalized, we will notify the public in advance of important construction start dates. Station design/station and track construction Q. Why won’t you have temporary stations at Lawrence and Berwyn? A. There is not enough space available to build temporary stations at those locations, unfortunately.
