Executive summary

HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Virtualization has been designed to address one of today’s top priorities for IT organizations – deploying applications faster through virtualization but in a way that does not increase IT complexity. At first, virtualization efforts focused on optimization – making the server more efficient. These efforts transitioned into standardizing virtualization across the data center, including management of servers, storage and networking. Now customers are looking to use virtualization technology and all supporting infrastructure as a complete and extremely efficient system. Pre-configured to meet the needs of mid-market customers, HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Virtualization offerings can be easily, reliably, and rapidly deployed to support a variety of virtualized application use cases such as general IT infrastructure, decision support, collaboration or business processing. HP takes the complexity out of the virtualization solution, using standard, balanced building blocks of servers, storage, and networking, along with integrated management software and bundled support – all delivered as a single, proven solution with VMware support. Much of the hardware and software contained in the solution stack is partner-integrated. Close engineering links between HP and VMware have resulted in application programming interfaces (APIs) and other cross-intellectual property (IP) offerings designed to minimize complexity and simplify management and interaction. Leadership performance Powered by a range of Intel Xeon E5-2600 v2 processors, HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Virtualization is designed to provide the performance required by demanding data centers. Storage scalability and performance have been optimized through tight integration with HP StoreVirtual VSA provided storage.

Realistic sizing While the scalability of an HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Virtualization depends on the particular workloads being virtualized, HP considers the storage I/O load on each VM to be particularly significant. Thus, an estimation of the number of typical VMs that can be supported by a particular configuration should take into account the following key considerations:

• Number of logical processor cores: The solution design assumes a minimum of one VM per logical processor core equivalent on each server. With Intel Hyper-Threading Technology enabled, each server in the HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Virtualization Standard configuration has 32 logical processor core equivalents and each server in the Performance configuration has 40 logical processors core equivalents. • I/O workload: Each VM is typically expected to sustain an average storage load of 30 – 50 host IOPS based on random, small-block I/Os with 60% reads/40% writes. Based on the core density and sustained storage I/O performance delivered by HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Virtualization, each server can support 32 VMs in the HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Virtualization Standard configuration

2 HP StoreVirtual VSA software transforms the server’s internal storage into a fully-featured shared storage array.

4 Technical white paper | HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Virtualization

or 40 VMs in the Performance configuration. However, in practice, it is unlikely that a particular workload server would be consuming 100% of its storage resources at any one time. Thus, if 50% of storage resources were being consumed on average for the 3 servers in the Starter configuration, it would be able to support 192 VMs in Standard or 240 VMs in Performance.

Note If you need help sizing a particular workload, you can consult HP Services. Alternatively, the HP Sizer for Server Virtualization can be used to access the HP Sizer for HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Virtualization. The sizer will propose an optimized HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Virtualization solution based on workload characteristics specified by you.

Appendix B – HP management software

This appendix outlines the key capabilities of HP Insight Control.

HP Insight Control Insight Control delivers deep insight, precise control, and ongoing optimization to unlock the potential of HP Converged Infrastructure. This management software also provides comprehensive proactive health management, remote control, patch management as well as rapid server deployment, VM management, and power management in one easy-to-install package. Insight Control includes the following components:

• HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) • Performance management • Power management • Remote management – HP Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) Advanced • Server provisioning • Storage provisioning • Server migration • VM management

For example, the remote management component provides comprehensive lights-out remote management capabilities for HP ProLiant servers, with features that include:

• High-performance virtual keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) for routine and emergency remote administration • Remote access to server power control and event logs • Virtual media for the simple deployment and updating of remote servers • Single-server power measurement and regulation

The power management component is an integrated power monitoring and management application that offers centralized monitoring and control of data center power consumption and thermal output. Efficient, effective tools are provided to increase the capacity of your data center by reducing the power and cooling requirements of HP ProLiant servers based on their actual workloads, delivering performance when you need it and cost savings when you do not. In addition, Insight Control detects, analyzes, and explains hardware bottlenecks on HP ProLiant servers. For example, you can receive proactive notifications of impending bottlenecks or debug existing performance issues. Performance information can be provided as part of an interactive display or logged to a database for later analysis or reporting. Insight Control also offers a complete deployment solution for HP servers, automating the process for deploying6 and provisioning server software, which, in turn, helps you adapt quickly and easily to changing business demands. The deployment component includes the ProLiant Integration Module (PIM), which provides the following optimizations for HP servers:

• Scripting toolkit • Configuration jobs for leading operating systems • Sample unattended files • Support packs that include software drivers, management agents, and important documentation

Insight Control makes it easy to upgrade or replace your existing server, or implement virtualization. For example, you can automatically replicate a well-functioning but under-performing or over-provisioned server to HP ConvergedSystem 300 for Virtualization – accurately and affordably. For more information on creating a well-run infrastructure, refer to HP Insight Control.

6 Deployment can be achieved via scripting or imaging.
