HARVARD SCHOOL OF DENTAL MEDICINE STUDENT HANDBOOK 2020-2021 © July 2020 Harvard School of Dental Medicine Mission The mission of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) is to develop and foster a community of global leaders dedicated to improving human health by integrating dentistry and medicine at the forefront of education, research and patient care. Vision Its vision is to transform dentistry by removing the distinction between oral and systemic health. Harvard School of Dental Medicine Student Handbook 2020-21 2 Special notes regarding the COVID-19 pandemic: The public health crisis occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented social and economic disruption worldwide, in the United States, and in the Boston/Cambridge area. Anticipating that continued in-person, on-campus instruction would increase the risk of infections in our community, the University acted promptly in March 2020 to “de-densify” its campus and transition to online instruction. Harvard reached this decision after careful (but time-pressed) deliberation, drawing on insights and expertise from public health experts worldwide — including on the Harvard faculty. As we look ahead to the new academic year (AY 2020-21) and beyond, we are planning for several contingency scenarios that would protect the health and safety of our community, preserve our ability to adapt to evolving circumstances, and ensure the continuity of our teaching and research mission. Harvard School of Dental Medicine continues to retain the discretion to apply its considered judgment to the question of how best to pursue its educational programs during the COVID-19 crisis, which may include, among other things, making recourse to online instruction and instituting compulsory testing and tracing programs as required conditions for accessing the Harvard campus or Harvard facilities. Effective August 3, 2020: Given the heightened risk of the spread of COVID-19 and other viral infection inherent in the practice of dental medicine, it is critical that all members of the HSDM community observe mandated safety guidelines and infection control protocols while working and training onsite. These updated protocols are outlined in the Harvard Dental Center (HDC) Staff, Student, and Faculty Guide during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Given the evolving nature of the pandemic, additional guidance has also been provided in school-administered email communications related to building and facilities access, social distancing guidelines, required PPE, testing protocols, as well as travel guidance. It is imperative that these guidelines are reviewed carefully and properly observed by members of our community. Effective the week of August 3rd, 2020, infractions that occur in the clinical or preclinical setting will result in a critical incident. When a critical incident is issued and recorded in AxiUm, it will be directed to the attention of the student’s Senior Tutor or Program Director, who will advance the incident to the Committee on Promotions or Committee on Advanced Graduate Education for review and determination of appropriate disciplinary action. Disciplinary measures will be dependent upon the severity of the reported incident and the number of previous critical incidents incurred. Disciplinary action may range from: placing a student on Monitored Status or Probation (see page 63 of this handbook for the full list of rules governing monitored academic status and probation); to clinical suspension; to possible dismissal from the program.
