Whitenton, Ph.D ABSTRACT Hearing Kyriotic Sonship: Rhetoric and the Characterization of Mark’s Jesus Michael R. Whitenton, Ph.D. Mentor: Kelly R. Iverson, Ph.D. This study utilizes a host of tools, from ancient rhetoric to modern cognitive science, in order to best approximate the diverse audience reactions to Mark’s Jesus within a hypothetical first-century audience present at a public reading of the entire Gospel. In order to delimit the scope of the study, I focus particularly on those episodes that prime or activate scripts from cultural memory grounded in the LXX, which hearers may associate with David and God. These two figures have often been downplayed in recent research because they do not receive much explicit attention in the Markan narrative itself. However, I demonstrate that the rhetorical culture of the first-century Mediterranean world prized what I have termed the “rhetoric of inference,” that is, those figures that lead audience members to making inferences and judgments that go beyond what is made explicit by the text itself. After grounding the rhetorical, performative, and cognitive aspects of this study in ancient and modern research, I trace the characterization of “kyriotic sonship” over the course of the entire Gospel. Kyriotic sonship refers to the characterization of Mark’s Jesus vis-à-vis assimilation to David and the God of Israel. This complex portrait, overlooked by modern readers (though not, it seems, by Matthew and Luke), is gradually and carefully unfurled over the course of the narrative, from prologue to passion, in a way that allows each audience member to join the perspective of the Gospel in her or his own time. In many ways, this study sets out to explore the Markan question, “If David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his ‘son’?” (Mark 12:37). The answer, I argue, lies in the use of the rhetoric of inference to prompt audience members to infer that Mark’s Jesus is the kyriotic Son, the one who is portrayed as a figure as Davidic as he is divine, as one who is ultimately enthroned upon the cross and then at God’s right hand. His new book attempts a survey of the formal principles of Homeric epic (in practice this means simply the Iliad—the virtual omission of the Odyssey is defended, though inadequately, on p. 21). It follows the lead of Arend, Fenik, Krischer, and others surveyed in the methodo- logical foreword. P. does, however, go beyond purely formalist analysis, with extensive sections on the use of similes, the conventions of the battlefield, and the intervention of the gods in the action. The book does not altogether fulfil the expectations aroused by the title. The first section (pp.23–86) is an extensive account of the hexameter and of the ways in which Homeric language is adapted to this metre and presumably to oral composition.

The bibliographical test compares the closeness of the Old and New Testament’s oldest extant manuscripts to its autographs (the date each book was originally penned) and the sheer number of the Biblical extant manuscripts with the number and earliness of extant manuscripts or other ancient documents like Homer, Aristotle, Herodotus and so on. Since the Bible outstrips every other ancient manuscript in sheer number and earliness to the autograph, then the Old and New Testaments have a solid basis to evaluate how accurately they have been transmitted. However, although apologists have stayed abreast of the dates of the earliest extant manuscripts and latest New Testament Greek manuscript counts, we haven’t kept up with the increasing numbers of manuscripts for other ancient authors that classical scholars now recognize. For example, although apologists rightly claim that there are well over 5,000 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament, they have reported the number of manuscripts for Homer’s Iliad to be 643, but the real number of Iliad manuscripts now is actually more than 1,800.

    CHRISTOPHER EVANS Christopher Francis Evans 1909–2012 THREE YOUNG MEN—two Anglican, one Methodist—studying Theology at Cambridge at various times in the 1930s were destined, though they did not know it, to become the three most influential British New Testament scholars of their generation. All were to become Fellows of the British Academy. The first was Charles Francis Digby Moule (always known as ‘Charlie’), who read classics at Emmanuel College, but then studied Theology at Ridley Hall in preparation for ordination; he became Lady Margaret’s Professor of Divinity in 1951. Youngest of the three was Charles Kingsley Barrett (known by his friends as ‘Kingsley’), who stud- ied mathe matics at Pembroke before switching to Theology and preparing for the Methodist ministry at Wesley House; he spent almost all his teach- ing career in Durham, where he became Professor of New Testament.1 In between them, and overlapping with Charlie Moule, was Christopher Francis Evans, who was for a short time Lightfoot Professor at Durham before moving to the University of London, as Professor of New Testament at King’s College. ‘Overlapping with’, and perhaps overshadowed by, Charlie Moule, who had gone up to Cambridge a year before him.     What will happen to God? Part 11 GERALD BRAY This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased These are famous words attributed to the Father, who, as the Synoptic Gospels record, pronounced them at the moment when the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus immediately after his baptism. The event is also recorded in the Fourth Gospel, but there we are told only that John the Baptist bore witness to the fact that Jesus was the Son of God. John's relative reticence is an argument in favour of granting him priority over the Synoptic account because it is so much less expansive on the subject of these extraordinary happenings. At the same time, John's account confirms that there is an important link between the Baptism of Jesus and the revelation that he is the Son of God. Students of early Church history may recall that Paul of Samosata was condemned at a Synod of Antioch in 268, apparently because he believed that the Baptism of Jesus was the point at which God adopted Jesus of Nazareth as his Son. The descent of the Holy Spirit, according to Paul's interpretation, was the seal which God put on this new relationship into which Jesus had entered. It is not difficult, of course, to see why Paul of Samosata should have fallen into this particular error. Paul was a firm believer in baptismal regeneration, and it seemed to him to be only logical that Jesus' baptism should have the same effect on him as it does on us.
