Epistolae Phalaridis (The Epistles of Phalaris), Latin translation by FRANCESCO GRIFFOLINI In Latin, decorated manuscript on parchment Italy (Northern?), c. 1460-1480 iii (modern paper) + 80 + iii (modern paper) folios on parchment, eighteenth- or nineteenth-century foliation in brown ink made before any leaves were removed, 17-88, 97-104, lacking 40 leaves: quires A, B, M, O and P (collation [lacking A-B8] C-L8 [lacking M8] N8 [lacking O-P8]), alphanumerical leaf signatures, Ci, Cii...Niii, Niiii, horizontal catchwords, ruled in brown ink (justification 95 x 57 mm.), written in gray ink in a fine humanistic minuscule in a single column on 16 lines, addressees of letters in red capitals, letter numbers in red in the margins, each letter begins with a very fine 2-line initial in burnished gold on a ground painted in red and blue, highlighted with white penwork, light scribbles in black ink on ff. 40v-41, f. 1 darkened and stained, further stains and signs of use especially in the lower margins at the beginning and the end, edges darkened, but in overall good condition. In modern light brown calf binding, spine almost entirely detached, slightly scratched on the back board. Dimensions 164 x 113 mm. The Italian humanists were fascinated by this collection of fictional letters by the monstrous Sicilian tyrant, Phalaris, famous for torturing his enemies inside a bronze bull and eating human babies. In keeping with the established tradition in Ancient Greece of epistolary fiction, these letters are a literary creation by a yet unknown author, who reinvented Phalaris and explored his public and private life through the fictional letters. -

His new book attempts a survey of the formal principles of Homeric epic (in practice this means simply the Iliad—the virtual omission of the Odyssey is defended, though inadequately, on p. 21). It follows the lead of Arend, Fenik, Krischer, and others surveyed in the methodo- logical foreword. P. does, however, go beyond purely formalist analysis, with extensive sections on the use of similes, the conventions of the battlefield, and the intervention of the gods in the action. The book does not altogether fulfil the expectations aroused by the title. The first section (pp.23–86) is an extensive account of the hexameter and of the ways in which Homeric language is adapted to this metre and presumably to oral composition. -

Senecan tragic characters and choruses often echo the language of Virgil’s epic in provocative ways; these constitute a contrastive reworking of the original Virgilian contents and context, one that has not to date been fully considered by scholars. -

After heaping together everything I could find about him in the library, I came to the conclusion that I still needed more information. So I decided to embrace my identity as a loyal member of the ‘Internet generation’ and began my virtual journey through the World Wide Web in search of articles on Nepos. -
On Translating Homer's Iliad
On Translating Homer’s Iliad Caroline Alexander Abstract: This reflective essay explores the considerations facing a translator of Homer’s work; in par- ticular, the considerations famously detailed by the Victorian poet and critic Matthew Arnold, which re- main the gold standard by which any Homeric translation is measured today. I attempt to walk the reader Downloaded from http://direct.mit.edu/daed/article-pdf/145/2/50/1830900/daed_a_00375.pdf by guest on 24 September 2021 through the process of rendering a modern translation in accordance with Arnold’s principles. “I t has more than once been suggested to me that I should translate Homer. That is a task for which I have neither the time nor the courage.”1 So begins Matthew Arnold’s classic essay “On Translating Ho- mer,” the North Star by which all subsequent trans- lators of Homer have steered, and the gold stan- dard by which all translations of Homer are judged. A reader will find Arnold’s principles referenced, directly or indirectly, in the introduction to most modern translations–Richmond Lattimore’s, Rob- ert Fagles’s, Robert Fitzgerald’s, and more recently Peter Green’s. Additionally, Arnold’s discussion of these principles serves as a primer of sorts for poets and writers of any stripe, not only those audacious enough to translate Homer. While the title of his essay implies that it is about translating the works of Homer, Arnold has little to CAROLINE ALEXANDER is the au- thor of The War That Killed Achil- say about the Odyssey, and he dedicates his attention les: The True Story of Homer’s Iliad to the Iliad. -

HUMANITIES INSTITUTE ANCİENT GREEK LİTERATURE Buckner B Trawick , Ph.D. Updated by Frederic Will, Ph D. The Age of Epic Poetry (c. 900 -700 B.C.)* Historical Background. Greek people inhabited not only the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula (Hellas), but also part of the coast of Asia Minor, part of Italy, and many islands in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas, including Crete and Sicily. On the Balkan mainland, mountains and the surrounding sea led to divisions into many petty local states, which carried on continual warfare with each other. The primitive inhabitants were a mixture of three strains: (1) Pelasgians or Helladics. The earliest known inhabitants of the Greek mainland, they were perhaps related to the inhabitants of Asia Minor, and they probably were not Indo-Europeans. Little is known of them except what can be learned from legends and from the archeological discoveries of Schliemann and Evans. (2) Aegeo-Cretans. They were probably of Mediterranean origin and probably blended with the Pelasgians c. 1800-1400 B.C. (3) Northern Indo- Europeans. Variously called Achaeans, Danaans, and Hellenes, these people probably migrated from the north of Greece c. 2000- 1000 B.C. After 1150 B.C. there were three rather distinct racial groups: (1) Dorians. Their main settlements were the Peloponnesus, the Corinthian Isthmus, the southwest portion of Asia Minor, Crete, Sicily, and parts of Italy; their principal cities were Sparta, Corinth, and Syracuse. The Dorians were warlike, reserved, and devout. Their dialect was terse and rugged. They perfected the. “stately choral ode.” (2) Aeolians. The principal Aeolian settlements were Boeotia, Lesbos, and northwestern Asia Minor. -

Galli / Mnemosyne 66 (2013) 800-808 De excidio Troiae by Dares Phrygius and Valerius Flaccus De excidio Troiae by Dares Phrygius is a short prose tale concerning the Trojan war,1) written probably between the 5th and the 6th centuries AD.2) In the first three chapters it starts by narrating the journey of the Argonauts to Colchis with the goal of conquering the golden fleece, presented as the remote cause of the Trojan war. In chapter one Dares narrates that Pelias, king of the Peloponnese, had a brother called Aeson and that, since his son Jason is a strong and brave man who could become a peril for his power, Pelias thought up the voyage to Colchis in order to kill him. In the second chapter Dares describes how Jason sailed with his fellows towards Colchis and landed first on the Phrygian coast where he suffered king Laomedon’s threats. Chapter 3 tells Hercules’ revenge on Laomedon with the looting of Troy, the murder of the king and the kidnapping of Hesione, his daughter. Hermann Dunger3) in 1869 was the first to recognize many similarities between these initial chapters of Dares’ tale and Valerius Flaccus’ Argonautica, advancing the thesis that they are the result of Dares’ familiarity with Valerius’ account; Dunger’s thesis has recently been restated by Andrew Zissos in his diachronic survey4) of the literary and artistic reception of Valerius Flaccus’ Argonautica from the Flavian period down to the 20th century. The most important similari- ties between the two poems pointed out by Dunger are the following: 1.
