A total of 204 research projects are being implemented to bridge the technology gaps in the most sensitive and hitherto under served geophysically and bio-ecologically constrained areas of Bangladesh. Out of these projects, 110 are already completed, while 54 Page 1 of 11 The World Bank Report No: ISR14680 will be completed by June 30, 2014 and 40 others - by November 30, 2014. The study on the "Institutional reforms and Research Management", one of the two critical studies for the operationalization of the Amended BARC Act, has been completed, validated and disclosed. However, the second study on "Financial Management Code" suffered from important delays which is a critical backdrop to lay the foundation for the follow up operation. Moreover, CIGs have emerged as valuable village level farmer organizations for implementation of the decentralized demand-led extension services promoted under the project, thus laying a solid foundation for strengthening the effectiveness of producer organizations. Also, the special drive for improving farmers access to quality seeds led to establishment of many farmer groups as seeds producing SMEs. The home grown model of Farmer Information and Advisory Centers have proved their effectiveness as single window access closer to the farmers and housed within the local government complex. The pilot on Supply Chain Development business model has been expanded from 10 to 20 upazilla with a broadened package of 42 post- harvest technologies along with a network of 25 Commodity Collection and Marketing Centers. The processing of all procurement packages are about to be completed, except for BARC and HORTEX which may hold back the current rising trend of disbursement. An action plan has been agreed with the project team for proper completion of all unfinished tasks. The disaster killed an estimated 160 persons, including 115 persons in Rangamati alone. According to the Chittagong Divisional Health Office Control Room Report, a total of 187 injured persons were admitted in local level hospitals. Approximately 85% of patients were admitted in Rangamati. While landslide related disaster occurs nearly every year, the second highest death toll of 127 deceased persons was recorded in 2007 [Disaster Forum, June 2017]. Monsoon rains caused severe flooding in low-lying areas to significantly damage road and communication infrastructure. Flood water rendered remote communities in Bandarban, Chittagong, and Rangamati districts were inaccessible by road. On June 14th, mudslides in southeast Bangladesh claimed additional lives in Cox's Bazaar and Khagrachari districts to further damage homes and infrastructure.
