The beginning of a real night of fifties Rock’n'Roll with many singers sitting in throughout the evening including Cliff Edmunds (the Avengers), a perfect rendering of ‘Move It’ and ‘Brand New Cadillac’; Pete Stockton ‘Girl Of My Best Friend’; Dave Sampson (the Hunters) sang ‘Love Me’; Danny Rivers, ‘Can’t You Hear My Heart’ plus Ray Lee (Dream Lover) and of course Rockin' Gerry Champion of the 2i’s coffee bar, rocked ‘I Go Ape’. Everybody was here not only to celebrate Keith’s birthday but also to thank him for all his great efforts in keeping the faith and attracting musicians from that magic time, way back when I was really young and played or jived the night away in Soho town. We even had a Skiffle group and Allan Bailey, (Soho Leg-ends) sang ‘Rock Island Line’. A friend shouted in my ear that “No tea chest bass sounded as good as the ones made for PG Tips!” In fact Ken Major had brought his original one from back in 1956. -

Talking Pictures TV www.talkingpicturestv.co.uk Highlights for week beginning SKY 328 | FREEVIEW 81 Mon 4th November 2019 FREESAT 306 | VIRGIN 445 The Young Ones on Talking Pictures TV Stars: Cliff Richard, Robert Morley, Carole Gray, Jet Harris, Hank B. Marvin, Tony Meehan and Bruce Welch, Richard O’Sullivan and Melvyn Hayes. Directed by: Sidney J. Furie. A swinging sixties British film musical, featuring Cliff Richard as a young singer, Robert Morley as his father and Carole Gray as the love interest. Legendary guitar group The Shadows perform as his band. A classic ‘the show must go on’ story, in which a group of young people find that their youth club is in danger of being flattened to make way for a new office block unless they can pay off the new owner, a ruthless property tycoon. To help raise the cash, Nicky, played by Cliff Richard, records a song and his friends broadcast it via a pirate radio station, calling him “The Mystery Singer” - the plan works and interest in their up and coming show is heightened by this new but unknown heart-throb. However, Nicky has an even bigger secret that he cannot share, even with his girlfriend Toni. Filmed in immaculate Eastmancolor with ambitious use of crane shots, the film stands out among the typical British pop vehicle of its day, paving the way for generations of youthful musicals. Freeview 81 Film Club Sky 328 newsletter Freesat 306 OCT/NOV 2020 Virgin 445 Dear Supporters of Film and TV History, Hoping you are all well in these strange times. It has certainly been a month of ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ here! We were so sad to hear the recent news of the sad loss of French singer and actress Juliet Gréco who was recently seen in Whirpool and The Big Gamble on Talking Pictures TV. Also, our own dear Dame Diana Rigg DBE sadly passed away recently; there is a tribute to her on page 12. Good news on the ‘lost film can’ front – we’ve found another episode of No Hiding Place on 16mm from a viewer’s private collection! Lots of interesting short films have also been brought forward – so do keep on checking your lofts, sheds and under the bed…. I’m very proud of our new DVD release this month - it’s a charming film with George Cole and Prunella Scales:The Ghost of Greville Lodge. A wonderful film for all the family and a nice gift. Noel was the Executive Producer on the film and we have very fond memories as a family of being on set with George and Prunella. I was actually supposed to play one of the parts, but alas I didn’t make it through to the final audition! It’s now presented with optional subtitles for the very first time and just £10 with FREE UK postage. Details on pages 2 and 3. The second project I’ve been working on this month is a wonderful AUDIO BOOK of SCROOGE narrated by dear George Cole himself. -

It argues that the biopic is a necessary category because producers, reviewers and cinemagoers have significant investments in biographical subjects, and because biopics construct a ‘public history’ for a broad audience. -
