Week17 E-Record .Indd E-Footy RECORD 9th August 2008 Issue 17 Editorial with Marty King FINALS FORMAT NOW SET FOR VELOCITY SPORTS CUP FINALS Countdown is on to the Velocity Sports Cup grand fi nal, which will be held at Carrara again this year on Sunday 21st September. It will be a double-header, with the reserves grand fi nal at 11am, followed by the seniors at 2.15pm. This represents a break from what has been a triple-header split by the Pineapple Hotel Cup grand fi nal. Instead, to help give the division two premiership decider its own identity, that will be played as a stand-alone event in conjunction with the PHC reserves on Saturday 13th September at a neutral venue in the region of the highest-placed team in the senior grand fi nal. This is a move supported by the Pineapple Hotel Cup teams and will ensure not one but two big days of State League grand fi nal footy in south-east Queensland. The schedule for the fi rst three weeks of the four-team fi nals format adopted for the Velocity Sports Cup this year presents many different scenarios with three home-and-away rounds still to play, but essentially we’ve adopted the following guidelines. • The First Semi-Final (3rd v 4th) will be played on the weekend of 30-31 August at the homeground choice of the highest ranked club, noting that Morningside and Mt Gravatt will use Coorparoo as their preferred hosting venue, and the Gabba will not be available because the Lions play in Sydney that weekend. If the Suncoast Lions were involved, this game would be played on Sunday 31 August. If the Suncoast Lions do not fi nish 3rd or 4th it will be played on Saturday 30th August. • The Second Semi-Final (1st v 2nd) will be played on Saturday 6 September at the venue of the highest ranked club – unless the Brisbane Lions make the AFL fi nals and the Suncoast Lions are involved. Then the day will be determined in conjunction with Lions AFL commitments. • The Preliminary Final (Winner 1st S/F v Loser 2nd S/F) will be played on Sunday 14 September at a neutral venue in the region of the highest ranked club – Brisbane or Gold Coast. Again, this is dependent on possible Lions commitments. In the fi rst three weeks all reserves fi nals will start at 11am, with the seniors at 2pm to allow extra time in the event of a tie. Only grounds which are properly fenced and so can charge admission are eligible to host fi nals matches. This precludes Morningside and Mt.Gravatt. Enjoy the last three weeks of the H&A season – it promises to be a fantastic battle. PINEAPPLE HOTEL CUP E-FOOTY RECORD ROUND 16 E-Footy RECORD 2nd August 2008 Issue 16 Editorial with Marty King GET INTO THE SPIRIT OF KICK AROUND AUSTRALIA DAY Next Thursday, 7th August, is the 150th anniversary of the fi rst recorded match of Australian Football between Melbourne schools Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar at Richmond Paddock, at what is now Yarra Park next to the MCG. As part of the celebrations of this wonderful occasion the AFL is staging ‘Kick Around Australia Day’ and I hope footy fans throughout Queensland will join the party. It’s an opportunity for all Australians to come together through football, and to wear your team colours or club scarf and have a kick of the famous Sherrin. There will be a stack of celebrations right across the country, but please, wherever you are and whatever you are doing, be part of it. Introduce friends, workmates and school friends to AFL and all that makes it the No.1 sport in Australia. Schools around the country have been busy making preparations for the day, with thousands of kids set to take part in football themed lessons, designed in line with the curriculum. Businesses and community organizations, too, are encouraged to get into the spirit and help recognize football’s 150th birthday, which is part of the Tom Wills Round, dedicated to one of the founding forefathers of our game. For further information on this and other 150th year celebrations, visit www.150years.com.au AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE QUEENSLAND COUNTRY SIDE Special congratulations to the Queensland Country side which won the division two title at last week’s Australian Country Championships in Shepparton, Victoria.

  • The Story of Jim and Phillip Krakouer. by Sean Edward Gorman BA
Moorditj Magic: The Story of Jim and Phillip Krakouer. By Sean Edward Gorman BA (Hons) Murdoch University A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy At Murdoch University March 2004 DECLARATION I declare that this dissertation is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work, which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. …………………………………. Sean Edward Gorman. ii ABSTRACT This thesis analyses and investigates the issue of racism in the football code of Australian Rules to understand how racism is manifested in Australian daily life. In doing this, it considers biological determinism, Indigenous social obligation and kinship structure, social justice and equity, government policy, the media, local history, everyday life, football culture, history and communities and the emergence of Indigenous players in the modern game. These social issues are explored through the genre of biography and the story of the Noongar footballers, Jim and Phillip Krakouer, who played for Claremont and North Melbourne in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. This thesis, in looking at Jim and Phillip Krakouers careers, engages with other Indigenous footballer’s contributions prior to the AFL introducing Racial and Religious Vilification Laws in 1995. This thesis offers a way of reading cultural texts and difference to understand some Indigenous and non-Indigenous relationships in an Australian context. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have often wondered where I would be if I had not made the change from work to study in 1992. In doing this I have followed a path that has taken me down many roads to many doors and in so doing I have been lucky to meet many wonderful and generous people.
