At the age of six, my daughter was a good reader for her age, but refused to start reading “proper books” with chapters and no pictures. She was bored with “Horrid Henry” and fairies saving a rainbow yet once more and insisted that she was old enough to read proper books, but every one she tried was “too difficult”. It wasn’t she couldn’t read them, it was the concepts and storylines; they were all designed for nine and ten year olds. There was another problem too. She wanted to read about girls, yet all the books about girls we could find were twee and dull. My daughter is happy to read about a princess, along as she is a Ninja Princess; happy to save rainbows, as long as it involves a good sword fight or perhaps a well-planned heist. After a few months of this, my lovely daughter stopped reading. We tried most of the “first chapter books” that people recommend; all met with disinterest. So I asked her exactly what she wanted in a “proper book”. After much though, she wrote down: “Dragons, princess, zombies, vampires, ghosts, but not spiders and it should be funny and scary and have fighting in it.” We couldn’t find such a book with concepts and vocabulary suitable for a six year old – so I wrote one. I had written novels before, but not a children’s book, so I had help from my daughter to find the right level.

The inaugural best-and-fairest award for the new women’s competition will be presented at the same event as the J. J. Liston Trophy for the best player in the VFL for the first time. This historic night will acknowledge the most talented players across both state league competitions, with the Rising Stars, leading goalkickers and Team of the Year selections announced. A number of the players in contention for Monday night’s honours will take to the field in finals this weekend as our competitions combine at North Port Oval. On Sunday, a double-header will feature the Preliminary Final in the VFL Women’s competition, with St Kilda Sharks facing Melbourne Uni and the winner to meet Darebin in the first VFL Women’s Grand Final at Coburg on September 18. MEDIA RELEASE Friday 8 July, 2016 Macedon Football Club hop to unique experience with North Melbourne Football Club The Macedon Football Club is celebrating after last night winning an exclusive coaching experience with the North Melbourne Football Club thanks to the FOX FOOTY Club Rewards program. The Cats’ junior and senior clubs, who compete in the Riddell District Football Netball Association, yesterday visited North Melbourne’s training facilities for an experience hosted by the Kangaroos’ head coach, Brad Scott, and his coaching staff. The experience saw four Macedon club members from both the senior and junior club treated to a coaching seminar and tour of their Arden St Oval facilities, led by senior coach, Brad Scott, and senior assistant coach, Darren Crocker. The FOX FOOTY Club Rewards program is an initiative driven by Foxtel to support grassroots sport and recognise football clubs and the benefit they deliver to their local community. The senior Cats last year made a stand against Domestic Violence, hosting Rosie Batty in front a full audience of consisting of a diverse range of members of the community. The club also showed its support for ANZAC Day in its annual match against Rupertswood Football Club, by supporting the Commando's Trust in providing financial support for our fallen soldier's families. The junior club since 2011 has teamed up with the Gisborne rookies in honour of former club member, Steve Simpson, who tragically passed away in 2010. The funds raised from the resultant ‘Play For Heart’ initiative, with money donated to the Macedon Ranges Health Service – dedicated to community welfare and aged care services to the Macedon Ranges community.

Sean Edward Gorman. ii ABSTRACT This thesis analyses and investigates the issue of racism in the football code of Australian Rules to understand how racism is manifested in Australian daily life. In doing this, it considers biological determinism, Indigenous social obligation and kinship structure, social justice and equity, government policy, the media, local history, everyday life, football culture, history and communities and the emergence of Indigenous players in the modern game. These social issues are explored through the genre of biography and the story of the Noongar footballers, Jim and Phillip Krakouer, who played for Claremont and North Melbourne in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. This thesis, in looking at Jim and Phillip Krakouers careers, engages with other Indigenous footballer’s contributions prior to the AFL introducing Racial and Religious Vilification Laws in 1995. This thesis offers a way of reading cultural texts and difference to understand some Indigenous and non-Indigenous relationships in an Australian context. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have often wondered where I would be if I had not made the change from work to study in 1992.
