Standing on the Parted Shores Text: Adapted from poem by Michael Walzer

Standing on the parted shores of history We still believe what we were taught before ever we stood at Sinai’s foot That wherever we go it’s eternally Egypt; That there’s a better place, a promised land, And the winding way to that promise passes through the wilderness; That there’s no way to get from here to there Except by joining hands and marching together. Singing…

One Voice Text: Ruth Moody This is the sound of one voice This is the sound of all of us One spirit, one voice Singing with love and the will to trust The sound of one who makes a choice Leave the rest behind it will turn to dust This is the sound of one voice This is the sound of all of us

This is the sound of voices two This is the sound of one voice The sound of me singing with you One people, one voice Helping each other to make it through A song for every one of us This is the sound of voices two This is the sound of one voice This is the sound of one voice This is the sound of voices three Singing together in harmony Surrendering to the mystery This is the sound of voices three

COMPOSER FEATURE Born on February 23, 1951, Debbie Friedman was one of the most influential and beloved Jewish musical figures of the past 40 years. She was an important singer, songwriter, and guitarist and recorded 21 albums of her original music. Originally influenced by American popular music of the 1960s and 70s—Peter, Paul & Mary, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, and Joni Mitchell—she, in turn, influenced younger singers and songwriters with her own dynamic style. Having struggled with an undiagnosed neurological condition for 20 years, Friedman died of complications from pneumonia on January 9, 2011 (at the age of 59). Citing her wide influence in music and her impact as faculty member in her final years, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion renamed their Cantorial School in her honor in 2011. It is now called the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music.
