They differ primarily in the tourism-motivated repre- sentation of the Dalmatian coastal towns and the representations on the Web that are shaped by the largely emigrated local communities from the Dalmatian hinterland. Keywords: identity, Internet, Dalmatia As Stuart Hall once observed, identity is not "what (we) get up in the morning and feel like being". Cities, Autonomy, and Decentralization in Japan Japan is known as a country in which a potent central power reigns over a compliant hierarchy and, for planning, this has meant strong centralized government control. Nevertheless, examples of autonomy have always existed in the politics, society, and economy of Japan and thrive today in various forms, particularly within urban areas. Following the growth and subsequent collapse of the bubble economy in the early 1990s, and in response to globalization, new trends toward local autonomy and political and economic decentralization are emerging that must be evaluated in the context of Japan’s larger political and socioeconomic setting as it becomes increasingly integrated into the global system. Cities, Autonomy, and Decentralization in Japan addresses these new initia- tives, providing a cogent compilation of case studies focusing on the past, present, and future of decentralization in Japan. These include small-scale developments in fields such as citizen participation machizukuri( ), urban form and architecture, disaster prevention, and conservation of monuments. The book offers the first in-depth analysis of this development outside Japan, approaching the subject from a unique urban studies/planning perspective as opposed to the more common political science method. Over 850 Mauthausen survivors have been recorded worldwide, more than 160 of them in Poland, and over 30 by The Nazi Concentration Camp Experience the author. The work offers an in-depth analysis of Polish survivors’ accounts, sensitive in a Biographical-Narrative Perspective to both, form and content of these stories, as well as their social and cultural framing. The analysis is accompanied by an interpretation of (Polish) camp experiences in a broader biographical and historical perspective. The book is an interpretive journey from camp experiences, through the survivors’ memories, to narratives recalling them − and backwards. The Author Piotr Filipkowski is a sociologist and oral historian, who works as a researcher at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is co-founder of the biggest Polish Oral History Archive at the History Meeting House in Warsaw.
