New alternatives for Children (NaC) was founded on the belief that all

NAC ’s mission is children, including those who are chronically ill or physically challenged, to provide innovative, have the right to live in safe, loving and permanent family homes. NaC ’s high quality services in mission is to provide innovative, high quality services in support of birth, support of birth, foster, foster, and adoptive families who are caring for children with special and adoptive families who are caring for medical needs at home. Accomplishments N AC Children by Ethnicity ‰ NaC has prevented the placement of children in foster care for more than 98% of children in its Special Medical preventive Other Services program. ‰ 30 children who were in foster care at NaC were either safely reunified with their birth family or adopted by their foster parents in 2009. in 2009, a and innovative healthcare initiative was launched – the NaC Comprehensive healthcare Center. This Center integrates NaC ’s licensed article 28 medical and article 31 mental health clinics with its preventive Services and Foster Care programs. NaC is one of the few child welfare agencies in New York State to offer such a comprehensive and coordinated healthcare Center under one roof. it is also the only Center in the state to provide highly specialized interdisciplinary medical, mental health and preventive health services specifically for children with chronic medical conditions involved in the child welfare system. dr. Wendy geringer was hired to serve as the Comprehensive healthcare Center director.

The Bridges to health (B2h) program has notably expanded in 2009. NaC ’s B2h population has increased from 20 children served in 2008, the year the program began, to 108 children in 200 9. Ms. alleyne-davis is a NaC birth parent, who has personal experience with the child welfare system. her son, who has cerebral palsy, was in foster care until the family was reunified in 2008. Ms. alleyne-davis is an integral member of NaC ’s Foster Care Team and will help to broker a relationship between birth and foster parents in addition to advocating for and supporting birth parents in meeting their service plan goals, informing parents of their rights, and participating in parent to parent meetings and Family Team Conferences. This position was funded in part by the Fund for Social Change.

Highlights

The NaC Kids Olympics has quickly become a favorite event, not only for NaC children and families, but for NaC friends and supporters as well. The 4th annual NaC Kids Olympics was held on June 6, 2009 at Chelsea piers. More than 500 NaC children had the opportunity to compete in an array of special Olympic events from a dance-off to gymnastics, batting skills, wheelchair basketball, and of course, the relay race finale. We are very grateful to evian, for providing bottled water for all the Olympians, and to the many individuals who supported NaC ’s Kids Olympics, including News Corporation and the hgi Foundation for underwriting this event.

NaC celebrated the holidays with more than 1,000 individuals, including medically fragile children and their families, on december 19th at its annual holiday party held at the Jacob Javits Center. Some 150 community and corporate volunteers helped to make the festivities of the day possible. holiday gifts for all the children and families were donated by The Today Show, the Federation of protestant Welfare agencies, Bertelsmann, inc., the Walt disney Company, The estée lauder Companies, K.i.d.S ., Cravath, Swaine & Moore, the Knit Wits, the robin hood Foundation, and Skadden, arps, Meagher & Flom, llp & affiliates.

NaC held its 2nd annual Literacy For All book fair in November 2009. More than 300 NaC children of all ages attended the fair and received new books donated by Scholastic, inc. and the Walt disney Company. NaC ’s parent advisory Committee helped to organize the Literacy For All day, which included lunch donated by Mcdonald’s restaurant. puppetry for arts helped with entertainment as they worked with NaC children to make hand puppets. Families also received bags of groceries from NaC ’s Food Bank. NAC in the News

‰ The New York Times ran two articles in 2009 featuring NaC families as part of their Neediest Cases Fund Campaign. The articles focused on how the families’ financial struggles were alleviated by emergency funds distributed through the New York Times Neediest Cases Fund.

‰ CBS News featured a segment on the NaC Kids Olympics in June and the NaC holiday party in december .

Board Activities

NAC ’s 2009 annual gala Benefit was once again a success. despite the uncertain economic times, NaC had a spirited outpouring of support at its “ Thinking Outside the Box” benefit dinner on October 20, 2009 at the pierre hotel. NaC honored leo hindery, Jr. and was supported by dinner Co-Chairs, Steven Brill, robert dyson, Mark gallogly, Jeffrey leeds, and elliot Stein. New York State Senator Thomas duane and New York State assemblyman Micah Kellner were also honored with Outstanding Public Service Awards for their continued support and commitment to NaC and the children we serve. Thanks in large part to our Board, NaC raised close to $1,000,000 from this event.

Board president-elect and former Secretary Virginia aaron officially became NaC ’s presiding president on June 10, 2009. Ms. aaron was elected president following the retirement of long-time Board president, elizabeth pforzheimer, who remains on the Board as president emerita.

Six NAC youth started college and one young adult entered a graduate program at NYU in 2009. in total, NAC has helped over 100 children with disabilities and chronic illnesses make their college dreams come true. 2009 financial Information
