MA.JAN.MAZZOTTA.pg.proof.corrs_Layout 1 08/12/2011 15:31 Page 12 A ‘gentiluomo da Ca’ Barbarigo’ by Titian in the National Gallery, London by ANTONIO MAZZOTTA ‘AT THE TIME he first began to paint like Giorgione, when he was no more than eighteen, [Titian] made the portrait of a gen- tleman of the Barbarigo family, a friend of his, which was held to be extremely fine, for the representation of the flesh-colour was true and realistic and the hairs were so well distinguished one from the other that they might have been counted, as might the stitches in a doublet of silvered satin which also appeared in that work. In short the picture was thought to show great diligence and to be very successful. Titian signed it in the shadow, but if he had not done so, it would have been taken for Giorgione’s work. Meanwhile, after Giorgione himself had executed the principal façade of the Fondaco de’ Tedeschi, Titian, through Barbarigo’s intervention, was commissioned to paint certain scenes for the same building, above the Merceria’.1 Vasari’s evocative and detailed description, which would seem to be the result of seeing the painting in the flesh, led Jean Paul Richter in 1895 to believe that it could be identified with Titian’s Portrait of a man then in the collection of the Earl of Darnley at Cobham Hall and now in the National Gallery, London (Fig.15).2 Up to that date it was famous as ‘Titian’s Ariosto’, a confusion that, as we shall see, had been born in the seventeenth century.

LA VERÓNICA DE ZURBARÁN Victor I. STOICHITA* Trad. • Ladies and Gentlemen, the Low Countries Developed Into a Major
Ladies and gentlemen, The Low Countries developed into a major junction for international goods from the twelfth century on, because of their central location. Its inhabitants drew on their knowledge and artistic creativity to generate revenue. Indeed, this was essential, because the soil of the polders contained no valuable ores or minerals. They made tapestries out of the wool they imported. Miniaturists passed on their knowledge and skills to the next generations. Panel painters began to use linseed oil instead of using egg-yolk as a binding medium, which created a substance that dried more slowly and offered the advantage of being easier to work. From then on, painters could render shades of light and dark more convincingly and found renewed pleasure in depicting the visible world – the reflection of a window in an eye, the tactility of fur, a fly on a flower. Portraits had never appeared so real. This technical revolution in painting was soon recognized throughout Europe. Paintings from the Low Countries stood for quality and were exported from on the beginning. Van Eyck, Van der Weyden, Van der Goes, Bouts, Memling and David had clients in Florence, Venice, Genoa, Barcelona, Valencia and Lisbon. Their work was copied on a massive scale. In addition to existing art intended for church and nobility, a new market developed for the middle classes. New genres emerged, such as landscapes, interiors and still lifes. Many artists dedicated themselves to producing scenes that were partial to everyday and anecdotal subject matter. These characteristics are typical for Flemish and Dutch art from the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries.

  • Art: the Theatre of Painting
The Sunday Times November 12, 2006 Art: The Theatre of Painting The first art book tells of staggering riches and even greater greed. So what’s new, asks Waldemar Januszczak With Christmas coming up, you are no doubt asking yourself which art books to buy for a loved one. There is no better present than an art book. We both know that. Art is the highest and most nourishing form of human expression, and a good art book seems a decent substitute for the real thing. Also, in my experience, they tend to be remaindered more brutally than other genres, and are therefore abundantly available at low prices. But I would like to recommend an alternative to the usual book-purchasing regime of flick through, pay and leave. First, survey the ocean of art literature before you with the suspicious eye of a sailor checking the horizon. Next, divide all the stuff you see into clumps: there are the super-huge ones that invariably cost about £100 and claim to be the final word on any given artist; the little pocket guides with blurred reproductions; the books published by the BBC to accompany the corporation’s annual art series; the ones translated from Russian or Bulgarian and printed on what seems to be blotting paper; the Taschen books with all the soft porn in them; and the library within a library devoted to Picasso. Personally, I find that tomes about minor Italian figures of the Renaissance embody the art book more triumphantly than any other of the groupings. Feeling the width of this output and recognising its categories won’t necessarily make you a better buyer.

  • DESPERATE HEROINES: GENDER and POWER in SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY ITALIAN ART by Kirby M. Richards Submitted in Partial Fulfillment O
DESPERATE HEROINES: GENDER AND POWER IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY ITALIAN ART by Kirby M. Richards Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Departmental Honors in the School of Art Texas Christian University Fort Worth, Texas May 2, 2014 ii DESPERATE HEROINES: GENDER AND POWER IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY ITALIAN ART Project Approved: Supervising Professor: Babette Bohn, Ph.D. School of Art Amy Freund, Ph.D. School of Art C.D. Dickerson III, Ph. D. Kimbell Art Museum iii ABSTRACT This thesis examined the work of the seventeenth-century Italian artist Guido Cagnacci with particular regard to his paintings of Cleopatra VII, the ancient Egyptian queen. He returned to the subject several times across his career, providing a useful critical lens for assessing the evolution of his artistic approach. Cagnacci often imitated the style of more popular artists, but at the end of his life he created two of the most strikingly original depictions of Cleopatra of the seventeenth century. This thesis proposed that the late shift in his approach to style and iconography was a reflection of his environment. After moving from Venice to Vienna, where he worked at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, Cagnacci was exposed to new artistic influences and a broader awareness of the political roles and authority of women. He combined Italian style with his new consciousness of Dutch and Flemish art to create two late depictions of the Egyptian queen that restore her dignity and reinterpret her suicide as an expression of power. I first considered Cleopatra as both a historical and legendary figure, exploring the verbal and visual manipulations of her narrative across the centuries.
