KATHERINE HATTAM

“There are two parts to making a work; the private doing, thinking and producing and then someone seeing that work.”

Katherine Hattam's latest collection was produced in lockdown from her kitchen table and studio space in . Her paintings imagine the abundance of the outside world just out of reach and highlight the intermingling normalcy and absurdity of being stuck indoors. In her mixed media works Hattam repurposes her late mother’s collection of Penguin classics and modernist textbooks painting the landscape seen from her kitchen window overtop of book pages reinterpreting and reimagining the history contained within. These personal objects mingle with Australian fauna creating a space where the dialectics of self and shared, home and habitat, coalesce with history and the here and now.

Katherine Hattam has exhibited extensively throughout Australia, over a career spanning more than forty years. Her work is held in numerous major private and public collections including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Heide Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Artbank, Art Gallery of South Australia, Bendigo Art Gallery, Warnambool Art Gallery, Grafton City Art Gallery, National Bank of Australia, Ian Potter Museum of Art and Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art. NICOLE KELLY

“During this period of stillness and confinement, my response has been direct and representational – a search for stability.”

Nicole Kelly's collection of intimate interiors were created at home after quickly having to return from a residency program in France as Europe went into lockdown in March. Unable to access her studio Nicole set up a working area at home and found inspiration in the quiet spaces of her immediate surrounds. These small scale works offer fleeting glimpses of landscapes and figures through doorways, windows and mirrors contemplating the fractured space between our interior and exterior worlds.

Winner of the prestigious Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship (2009) and the Hurford Hardwood Portrait Prize (2018), Kelly is well recognised for her landscape, portraiture and still life painting. She has undertaken residencies in France (2019, 2018, 2017, 2010) and Spain (2016) and has completed major public commissions for the Sutherland and St George Hospitals in Sydney. Her work has been selected for inclusion in the Lester Prize for Portraiture at the Art Gallery of WA (2019, 2018, 2017, 2015), Portia Geach Memorial Award (2020, 2019, 2015, 2014), Salon des Refuses (2020, 2019) and Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW (2015). Kelly’s work is held in the collections of the Moran Art Foundation and Lismore Regional Gallery, among others. She is currently completing her Masters of Fine Art at the University of New South Wales where she is undertaking research in contemporary painting and poetic literature. Full CV here. NICOLA MOSS

“The garden has been a sanctuary – a place where I have felt grounded and calm. Amidst all the change, plants still give me hope.”

Nicola Moss' recent collaged works were created in her studio on the Gold Coast and highlight the importance of green spaces amid congested urban environments. Relying on an archive of papers coloured using paint, graphite, printmaking and various stains, Moss' materials travel with her as she explores the physical landscape. Impressions from tree bark frottage rubbings, for example, become collaged elements of her compositions. Framing nature as a source rather than a resource the artist highlights how intrinsic sustainable green spaces are to our well-being, both physical and mental.

Nicola Moss has exhibited throughout Australia, Japan, Sweden and the USA since beginning her professional practice in 2006. Moss was awarded the Moreton Bay Region Art Award (2012) and in 2019 was selected to participate in the artist in residence program at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venice. She has been a finalist in numerous awards including the John Leslie Art Prize (2020), Fisher’s Ghost Art Award (2019), the STILL: National Still Life Award (2019) and the Sunshine Coast Art Prize (2018, 2017, 2014). Her work is held in many important collections including that of the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Moreton Bay Region Art Collection and the Social Securities Appeals Tribunal, Brisbane. BELINDA FOX

“2020 has been a creative journey to find inspiration and solace in the places and spaces perhaps we took for granted in the past.”

Belinda Fox has forged an international career showing in Australia, USA, Europe, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea and Jakarta. She has received several notable awards including the Paul Guest Drawing Prize (2010), and Burnie Print Prize (2007) and been a finalist in the Swan Hill Print and Drawing Award (2018, 2006, 2004) and Fremantle Art Prize (2007, 2006, 2003). ROBYN SWEANEY

“Our way of life has been challenged in many ways over this past year… Home is definitely the place to be at the moment.”

Robyn Sweaney’s collection of painted homes were created in her studio space on the northern coast of New South Wales. Sweaney has long been inspired by the Australian home and the complex layering of history, ideology and identity contained within them. The houses featured in this collection were captured in drawings and studies which were exhibited at Arthouse Gallery in June 2020. Choosing to limit her travel this year Sweaney came to rely on this archive of places visited reinterpreting her studies and giving them new life as fully realised paintings.

Robyn Sweaney has exhibited regularly since 1992 and been involved in over ninety group exhibitions. She was the winner of the Wynne Trustees’ Watercolour Prize, AGNSW (2019) and has been the finalist of many major awards including the Wynne Prize (2019, 2017, 2011), Salon Des Refusés (2018, 2016, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008), Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Prize (JADA) (2018, 2014, 2010, 2008, 2004), Mosman Art Prize (2015, 2010, 2009), Paddington Art Prize (2015, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009), Moran Prize (2012, 2011), Portia Geach Memorial Award (2013), Fleurieu Art Prize (2013) and the Sulman Prize (2009). JOSHUA YELDHAM

“I trust in providence, the protective care of nature as a spiritual power.”

Joshua Yeldham’s latest body of work was created in his studio on the Hawkesbury River following enlightening trips to Lord Howe Island in New South Wales and the Rocky Mountains in Colorado in the months before travel limits came into place. These pieces consider the protective care of nature as a spiritual power and highlight the refuge natural spaces have offered us this year.

Joshua Yeldham has exhibited widely throughout Australia and internationally. Recently awarded the prestigious Nancy Fairfax Artist Residency, he created new works exhibited in association with his retrospective exhibition at Tweed Regional Gallery (2017). Yeldham has been a finalist in numerous prestigious awards including the Wynne Prize (2019, 2018, 2017, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2009), Archibald Prize (2013), Sulman Prize (2006, 1998) and Mosman Art Prize (2005, 2003) and in 2015 he participated in the London Art Fair, ART15. FABRIZIO BIVIANO

“Embedded with personal and cultural references, my paintings function as self-portraits in a particular moment in time.”

Fabrizio Biviano’s latest paintings were produced in lockdown from his home studio in east Melbourne. These self-referential still lifes feature collections of books, videos and tapes crested with floral arrangements plucked from front yards in his local neighbourhood. In balancing familial commitments, teaching year 12 visual art over zoom and a haphazard sleep schedule these works playfully remind us of the balancing act of keeping up with 2020 and that time spent listening to music, drinking coffee and trips to the flower markets are precious things not to take for granted.

Biviano completed a Master of Fine Art from Monash University in 2014. An art instructor by day, he maintains a tireless dedication to his practice. Biviano was a finalist in the inaugural Evelyn Chapman Art Award at S.H. Ervin Gallery (2018) and the Eutick Memorial Still Life Award (2018). He was also a finalist in the renowned Arthur Guy Memorial Prize for Painting (2015), the Paul Guest Prize for Drawing (2014) and the Belle Arti, Chapman and Bailey Art Award (2010). His work features in the collections of Artbank and the Latrobe University Museum of Art and many private collections in Australia, the USA and the UK. Full CV here.
