Arms Control Verification Regimes and Their State Parties
21st Century Trust Issues: Arms Control Verification Regimes and Their State Parties Jasmine Moheb University of California - San Diego Political Science Department Senior Honors Thesis 2020-21 1 Abstract In just under a century, arms control has both been conceived and become the forefront of international security with its high ambitions of regulating arms advancements that threaten the existing balance of power. Yet, human nature and the incentive mechanisms by which state actors make decisions has stayed relatively constant over time – allowing us to analyze these and apply them to a world that is in continuous flux. Making an effort to generalize patterns from a history of state behavior and apply them to the future is a critical function of political science research; one that I seek to contribute to in the field of arms control through this thesis. The relevance of arms control agreements in our modern global security network is an essential one, yet one that I believe is understudied. In a novel attempt to understand the intricacies of arms control agreements, I pursue the research question “Does the number of state parties in an agreement affect the total number of verification methods employed?” I find that the results are contradictory looking at just these two variables, but focusing on the inner workings of bilateral, regional, and international agreements, multilateral agreements tend to adopt more verification methods when they consist of a greater number of state parties. This is especially true in the case of certain verification methods over others. I also discover the role of third parties as well as the power of state players in regard to how they interact with the likelihood of adopting verification methods. -

THE ROCHDALE BAPTISTS 1773 - 1973 A SHORT HISTORY Written in 1973 to commemorate the Bi-centenary of the West Street Baptist Church Rochdale. (RE-PUBLISHED: ON THE OCCASION OF THE 225TH ANNIVERSARY IN 1998.) By: A. Whitehead. “On 18th September 1773 friends at Rochdale asked at an Ebenezer (Bacup) Church meeting exemption from supporting the ministry there any longer in consequence of the expense attaching to the infant cause at Rochdale. Their prayer was granted by the famous Rev. John Hirst and his people without demur.” Page 1 of 47 That part of the Christian Church known as the Baptists is less than 400 years old, although in earlier times sections were in existence whose fundamental principle was that of the immediate and direct accountancy of God of each individual; that between God and the individual there was no mediator save Jesus Christ. These were the Anabaptists who rejected the priestly notions of Christian ministry and all forms of State support. They maintained their preachers by free-will offerings; whose one qualification must be a divine call to such service. Anabaptism in England was never organised and lacked leadership, for this reason it cannot be regarded as the seed-bed of the English Baptists. John Smyth was the first English Baptist. He first took orders of the Church of England, then became a Puritan Separatist and finally a Baptist Separatist, eventually fleeing to Holland and becoming the pastor of a Church of English Separatist there. In 1609 he first baptised himself and then baptised Thomas Helwys, a gentleman of Basford in Nottingham, who financed the emigration of a Gainsborough Separatist Church to Amsterdam, and others. -

COLONIZATION, MEDIATION, AND INTERPRETATION IN THE SUN DANCE CONTACT ZONE DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Sandra Garner, B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Comparative Studies The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Lindsay Jones, Advisor Maurice Stevens Richard Shiels Copyright by Sandra Garner 2010 ABSTRACT This research project focuses on the Sun Dance, an Indigenous ritual particularly associated with Siouan people, as a site of cultural expression where multiple, often conflicting concerns, compete for hegemonic dominance. Since European contact the Sun Dance has been variously practiced, suppressed, reclaimed, revitalized, and transformed. It has also evoked strong sentiments both from those that sought to eradicate its practices as well as those who have sought its continuance. In spite of a period of intense colonial repression, during the last three decades the Siouan form of the Sun Dance has become one of the most widely practiced religious rituals from Indigenous North America and the number of Sun Dances held and the numbers of people participating has grown significantly. How has the Sun Dance ritual endured in spite of a lengthy history of repression? What is it about the Sun Dance that evokes such powerful sentiments? And, how do we account for the growth of the Sun Dance. I argue that the current growth and practice of the Sun Dance must be considered within the context of colonialism; a central focus of this dissertation. I identify the complex and messy ways that individuals mediate the inequitable power relations that shape colonialist interactions, as well as the way they interpret these social spaces. -

But on special occasions we would take lengthy road trips that ended with destinations in the Appalachian Mountains, the Gulf of Mexico, Yellowstone National Park, and Myrtle Beach. As an ―East River‖ South Dakotan, driving six hours west to visit the Black Hills was hardly as exciting as going to the beach. -

Heflin May 1997 EXAMPLES FOR THE WORLD: FOUR TRANSITIONAL SIOUX WRITERS A.ND THE SIOUX LITERARY RENAISSANCE Thesis Approved: Thesis Advisor Dean of the Graduate College 11 PREFACE Transitional era Sioux produced some of the most prolific and most influential writers among American Indians of the time. They, as an individual Indian nation, deserve a closer analysis in respect not only because of the sheer number and range ofworks--from autobiography to opera--they produced, but also because of the depth and quality of their writings. While American Indian writings should not be judged solely based on their adherence to EuroAmerican literary traditions, their contributions to those traditions should be acknowledged. Charles Alexander Eastman, Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, Luther Standing Bear, and Nicholas Black Elk all contributed to the tenor of Modernist American literature, perhaps more accurately labeled Transitional American literature for all writers from approximately 1890 to 1955. This study examines Eastman, Bonnin, Standing Bear, and Black Elk as Sioux writers who were affected by and who in tum affected Modem American literature and the writers, especially other American Indians, who followed. While examining them as Sioux writers, arguing in effect for acknowledgement of the Sioux Literary Renaissance, I examine the effect their cultures--both Sioux and EuroAmerican--and their individual choices had on their writings. -

Hausmann May 2019 Examining Committee Members: Andrew Isenberg, Advisory Chair, History Department, University of Kansas Seth Bruggeman, History Department Jessica Roney, History Department Bryant Simon, History Department Ari Kelman, External Member, University of California-Davis ABSTRACT In 1972, a flood tore through Rapid City, South Dakota, killing 238 people. Many whose lives and homes were destroyed lived in a predominately Native American neighborhood known as “Osh Kosh Camp.” This dissertation asks: why did those people lived in that neighborhood at that time? The answer lies at the intersection of the histories of race and environment in the American West. In the Black Hills region, white Americans racialized certain spaces under the conceptual framework of Indian Country as part of the process of American conquest on the northern plains beginning in the mid- nineteenth century. The American project of racializing Western spaces erased Indians from histories of Rapid City, a process most obviously apparent in the construction of Mount Rushmore as a tourist attraction. Despite this attempted erasure, Indians continued to live and work in the city and throughout the Black Hills. In Rapid City, rampant discrimination forced Native Americans in Rapid City to live in neighborhoods cut off from city services, including Osh Kosh Camp After the flood, activists retook the Indian Country concept as a tool of protest. This dissertation claims that environment and race must be understood together in the American West. -

MCLAIRD Hundreds of books have been published relating information about South Dakota's past, but many are poorly written and con- tain inaccurate information; some are technical; a large number are not readily available; and no one has time to read them all. The following reading list is designed for the person who wants to gain a general, yet solid, knowledge about South Dakota's past without becoming a full-time researcher. It might be useful for individuals who wonder which book would be a good one to read on a par- ticular topic or for those who want to build a modest collection of books on South Dakota subjects but do not know which items are preferable. In recent years, I have criticized bibliographies on South Dakota history because they lacked clear purpose and audience. Lengthy lists of books and articles have been compiled that included highly technical monographs, relatively unimportant works, and unreliable accounts with insufficient critical commentary separating them from more significant works. My own list is targeted for the general read- er; a bibliography for a research historian would include different selections. A librarian, concerned about what to recommend to patrons who asked for books about particular subjects, suggested that I tackle this project.
