County Golf Club Breaking Points 13/09/2020 Captain’s Message

Members & Friends,

The first weekend of September was eventful for - Lady President Una’s Day on 4th September; Junior Captains’ Day on Sunday 5th September; the first “dual” tee competition played on Sunday and the local GAA team Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point winning their first Senior County Championship semi final.

Well done to Suzanne Currid on winning the Lady President’s Prize on a score of 36 points on the back 9.

Last Sunday-a first for our competitions- “dual” tees- the Harry Colt Cup was played off blue tees with an alternative competition off the green tees. A similar option will be available to members in this Sunday’s competition, The Connaught Bar Cup, sponsored by Jones Oil.

The last two Sunday competitions were for Golfer of the Year and Alan Gaynor currently leads the “field” 6 points ahead of Shane Underwood. Five more competitions remaining and all to play for.

The Club will undergo two new projects over the next few months- the replacement of the surface of the third green and the development of a new putting and chipping practice area at Bomore- which is explained more fully in the Links Update below.

At last! my Captain’s Day has finally arrived after a two month postponement. A packed entry sheet and reserves list. Thanks to Pat Mc Daniel and Gerry Fox for facilitating as many players as possible and posting the draw on BRS last Friday. As there is a reserve list, if unable to play please contact the shop. Good luck to all 192 players next Saturday 19th September.

Best of luck also to our Club members, Fergal O’ Flaherty, Kevin Dufficy , Cian, Ciaran, Eoin, Joseph, Mark, Sean and Tom and the Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point team who play in their first Senior County Championship final next Sunday 20th. The red and black flags will be flying high on the prom this week!

Regards, John Mc Hugh Captain CSGC A message from Lady President Una Howley

My Lady President's Day was last Saturday, 5th September.

The first thing to notice is the date, 5th September. Usually all the official celebration days are in mid summer. I'm sure you can guess why it was late this year, Covid. As the song goes " it's a long, long time from May to December , but the days grow short when you reach September". Yet we managed to fit in over 100 players - first two players off at 7.50.

An early start with hair, dress, blazer and shoes all in place for the first photographs of the day with Niamh Fitzpatrick and Emma Flanagan followed by our Lady Captain, Edel, Jean Barr and Joan Harte.

Weather is all important and I had the Child of Prague out from the night before. Well it worked quite well for most of the day, but a few of the late starters were unlucky. Mary Conefrey and partners said I had the Child of Prague facing the wrong way, for them.

Most of the day was a blurr as I was swamped with good will wishes and presents from the members. My biggest regret of the day was for not having all of them at a celebratory dinner that evening .

We had a very popular winner of my prize, Suzanne Currid. Congratulations Suzanne.

Great praise is due to the Lady Captain and her Committee for organising tea/cakes etc to be served throughout the day. It was great to see some of the elderly ladies joining us for a cuppa during the day.

A special thanks to our Manager, David, who couldn't be more helpful. Nobody realises how many members are involved to make the day run smoothly.

I have many happy memories of the day and they will stay with me for a long time.

There is one Major Day left this year - Captain John's Day on the 19th September.

I wish John and Sinead a successful and memorable day.

The decision has been taken to resurface the 3rd green as it has not matured well enough and is by far the weakest surface on either course. The underlying reason is that the turf used in 2014 was imported and it simply has not acclimatised well enough.

This work will commence in October and will have a similar timeline as the 15th green last winter. A temporary green, in the area where the original green was located, will be used for winter play. This area is now marked as GUR. Our course architect has been asked to consider any minor redesign ideas that may improve traffic flow and reduce the wear and tear areas.

This time we will use our own turf which will be taken from the pitching green (beside the caravan park) as this will cause least disruption. The pitching green will be reseeded immediately. Links Report 2. New practice putting and chipping greens will be built in Bomore in the area to the rear of the driving range bays. This area is untidy and unsightly and such a facility will add significantly to the Bomore complex. Work on this project will commence this month and will involve stripping the surface, importing suitable base material, installing irrigation etc. The surface will be seeded and should be available for play early next year.

The cost of the Bomore practice greens will be covered from funds bequeath to the club recently. It is considered appropriate to use these funds for such a project rather than being swallowed in day to day cashflow.

Disruption will be kept to a minimum during these two projects and you are asked to be patient with any inconvenience. I believe that the overall improvement of facilities will make it worthwhile.

The coastal erosion project is moving forward and there will be much more about this elsewhere in the immediate future.

Both courses continue to be very busy and this can lead to slow play occasionally. Please be conscious of your position on the course and do not allow gaps open up between your group and the group ahead. If there is space ahead and a smaller/faster group is waiting to play behind you, it is proper etiquette to allow the faster group to play through. This makes the game more enjoyable for everyone.

I'm not going to harp on about repairing pitch-marks and using divot bags this time, just to say thanks to members who pay attention to both.

Enjoy your golf.

Terry Brady Links Chairman Gaelic Footballers in Historic County Final It's an exciting time for our local GAA club with Drumcliffe/Rosses Point set to create a little piece of history next Sunday, September 20th, when the club's senior men's gaelic footballers contest their first-ever Sligo senior championship final at . The team has plenty of ‘golfing' connections with manager Fergal O'Flaherty and selector Kevin Dufficy both regular club competition players at Co Sligo Golf Club. Kevin was part of the backroom team for our successful junior foursomes team in 2018, where he helped with the mental side of the game. On the playing front, the GAA team also includes Tom Armstrong, a member of our Fred Daly and Junior Cup teams for several years. Ditto Joe Keyes who'll be watching next Sunday's final from Madrid, where he's just begun his University year abroad. Also on the DRP team is Eoin Gaughan, who's been part of the golf club's Senior Cup team. Two other current footballers, who've been bitten bit the 'golfing bug' more recently, are Seán Power, Cian McBride and Ciaran Lynam. They've rejoined Co Sligo golf club over the past 12 months. And, of course, – Mark Horkan (son of Tom) is one of the football team's midfield maestros this year.

Drumcliffe/Rosses Point's historic appearance in the final will also be a proud moment for other long-serving Co Sligo Golf Club members such as club historian Padraig Keane - a noted gaelic footballer himself in his day - and whose family have had a long association with the local GAA club.

Next Sunday's GAA final will be streamed live on sligogaa.ie from 4pm and is also being broadcast live on Ocean FM from for anybody who would like to watch/listen to it.

Co Sligo Golf Club wishes the gaelic footballers the very best of luck. Austin O'Callaghan (Jnr) Team News Junior Cup

Well done! Godsell & Blackwell Junior Matchplay Events The Godsell Cup is the Blue Riband matchplay event for the 18 Hole Boys each year and is always a hotly contested event, this year being no different. The leading qualifier was Conor Meade. Christopher Longworth won the final on the main course on Wednesday August 26th, the first 3 rounds being played on the Bomore course. He played against Marc Clifford in the first round and only won over the last few holes. In the second round he defeated Daniel Ford on the 18th hole after a v close match. In the semi final he met Lorcan Feeney and in an exciting match won on the first play off hole. In the final his opponent was Jack Flanagan and it was only in the last few holes of a v competitive match that he pulled away to win. He would like to thank all the competitors and, of course, the organisers of the competition." Godsell & Blackwell Junior Matchplay Events The Blackwell Cup is the matchplay event for the 9 Hole Boys from the Green Tees in Bomore. The leading qualifier was Finnán O’Mahoney. On the Saturday qualifying, last year’s winner, Colm O’Brien, had a poor day out and it was picture and no sound when he came home. He had visions of retaining his title like George Gillen, whom he beat in last year’s final, had almost achieved having won in 2018. But there was to be a reprieve: our Junior Convenor decided to go on holidays after the event and discovered he had made an error and had only selected 15 boys instead of 16 for the matchplay stage. Colm, Leo Rahilly and Dylan Nicholson had all finished on equal points so a play-off was held between the three on the following Saturday. It came down to the last putt on the 9th green to see Colm through by the skin of his teeth! There were some epic battles during the matchplay rounds with two matches pitting brother against brother in the Arnold and Cunningham households. The final between Colm O’Brien and Hugh Óg Arnold was a very close affair with Colm making a very quick start, getting to 3Up after 5 holes but Hugh battled for all he was worth and the match was decided on the 9th Green when Colm holed a 5 footer to win and retain the trophy. He’s very quick to remind us that the last (and only!) person to retain the Blackwell Cup was David Brady in 2005 and 2006: if his golfing career is half that of David’s, he’ll be doing very well!!!
