She was a long time supporter and patron of the Ballymote Heritage Group and one of the oldest residents in the town of Ballymote. Elizabeth (nee White) was born in 1918 in Kingsbrook near Riverstown and married Eugene Gilhawley in 1939. Eugene, a native of Skreen, had been appointed Principal of Knockalassa National School, Riverstown in 1936. They lived in the residence attached to the school and six of their seven children were born here. Eugene entered local politics in 1955, winning a county council seat in the Ballymote electoral area.     Issue 58 January 2020 Fr Paul Dempsey appointed Bishop of Achonry Diocese Pope Francis appointed Father Paul Dempsey, PP of Newbridge Parish in the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin, as Bishop of the Diocese of Achonry on 27 January. Speaking in the Cathedral of the Annunciation and Saint Nathy, following the announcement, Father Dermot Meehan, Administrator of Achonry Diocese said, “Today, Father Paul Dempsey comes into our assembly as Christ’s messenger, having accepted his appointment by Pope Francis as pastor of the people and priests of Achonry. We warmly welcome his appointment and, on behalf of the priests, religious and people of the diocese, I thank him for accepting it. It is a reason for rejoicing for us in Achonry that a priest of Father Paul’s calibre and extensive experience in pastoral ministry in his native diocese of Kildare and Leighlin comes to us as our new bishop. We assure him of our prayers as he prepares for his new role and we ask God to bless him with joy, contentment and peace in his ministry among us.” Speaking to the congregation of almost 800, gathered in the cathedral for the announcement, Father Dempsey said, “I’m sure you can understand how daunting it is to take on the role of bishop in a new diocese. I’m conscious of my own unworthiness and sinfulness as I take on this role. I ask you to be patient with me as I endeavour to get to know the priests, people, deacons and religious of the diocese in the coming weeks and months.” The Episcopal Ordination of the new Bishop of Achonry will take place on 19 April 2020, Divine Mercy Sunday.

    INTRODUCTION 1.1 Under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Acts, each Planning Authority is obliged to prepare a Development Plan for its functional area and review this Development Plan every five years. The Development Plan is the core document of the planning and development process. It presents Sligo County Council’s short to medium term view of the future development of the county and underpins the Council’s overall objectives of promoting and facilitating development, conserving the environment and achieving optimum use of resources. The Development Plan provides a framework for the physical development of the county and allows for sustainable, co-ordinated and orderly growth which respects the county’s natural, built and heritage resources. This County Development Plan reviews and updates the previous County Development Plan adopted by Sligo County Council in 1985. It takes account of the major developments that have occurred since 1985 in terms of population and economic trends, physical infrastructure, growth patterns and social deprivation. It recognises and sets out physical development objectives aimed at redressing the enduring problems of rural depopulation and disadvantage, dereliction, sporadic housing in scenic areas and service deficiencies. Every effort has been made to incorporate significant changes in legislation, Departmental guidelines, European Union directives and socio-economic factors impacting upon the development process; the intention is to present a concise, document which guides and informs the achievement of sustainable development1. Sligo County Council will have regard to the aims of Local Agenda 21 in the formulation and implementation of policies contained within the Development Plan2.
