II Dip in Philosophy 390 The College Chapel Choir Director of Sacred Music: -RKQ2¶.HHIIH3K'+'(/7&/ The College Chapel Choir assists at college liturgies on Sundays and feast days. Its repertoire includes Gregorian Chant and native Irish religious music, in addition to sacred polyphony from both eastern and western Christian traditions. The choir has a membership of around twenty clerical students, and practices twice weekly. Admission is by audition. All seminarians are involved to a significant degree in preparation, practice and reflection on music in the liturgy. The input given to the whole seminary community is outlined on the following pages. History of Music in Maynooth Music was established on a formal basis in the college with the appointment of the first Professor of Church Chant and Organ in 1888, in the person of the German scholar-priest, Heinrich Bewerunge of the diocese of Paderborn. Fr Bewerunge was a prominent Cecelian ± a movement that aimed to restore Gregorian Chant following its neglect in the 19th Century. He was also an internationally regarded scholar who established in Maynooth a rich tradition of plainchant and polyphony, some key elements of which continue to be woven LQWRWKHVHPLQDU\¶VDQQXDOOLWXUJLFDOF\FOH Bewerunge's influence was a formidable one, not only in the College, but also in the general musical life of the country. He established the seminary choir to very exacting standards of performance, and equipped the College Library with the most scholarly music editions of the day. In addition, he wrote voluminously on all the musico-philosophic subjects of the time. The maintenance and development of a rich tradition of liturgical music is accorded great importance in Maynooth. Feasts and Seasons, a collection of appropriate vernacular music for the liturgical year, and available in book and CD, is widely used throughout the country by parish congregations and choirs. It represents a sampling of new liturgical material continually being developed in the National Seminary to sustain and enrich liturgical worship. 391 Music in the Liturgy Director of Sacred Music: -RKQ2¶.HHIIH3K'+'(/7&/ Seminary Community 24 hours This course initiates the students into an appreciation of the richness of musical expression of WKH&KXUFK¶VULWHVSULQFLSDOO\WKH(XFKDULVWDQG/LWXUJ\RIWKH Hours. This is done through the various sung texts associated with the roles of presider, assembly, choir, cantor, etc. It does so in the context of the graduated unfolding of the college year and provides a necessary weekly forum for preparation and reflection on music in the liturgy. The rites themselves, the range of presiders and the liturgy group structure ensures a rich and varied liturgical experience in the course of a year. Throughout the course their principal role as participating members of the assembly and its importance to the community is emphasised. As the year progresses and they grow in confidence, and as the community need arises, students will be trained to make more specific contributions as choir-members, cantors, psalmists or instrumentalists.     Issue 58 January 2020 Fr Paul Dempsey appointed Bishop of Achonry Diocese Pope Francis appointed Father Paul Dempsey, PP of Newbridge Parish in the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin, as Bishop of the Diocese of Achonry on 27 January. Speaking in the Cathedral of the Annunciation and Saint Nathy, following the announcement, Father Dermot Meehan, Administrator of Achonry Diocese said, “Today, Father Paul Dempsey comes into our assembly as Christ’s messenger, having accepted his appointment by Pope Francis as pastor of the people and priests of Achonry. We warmly welcome his appointment and, on behalf of the priests, religious and people of the diocese, I thank him for accepting it. It is a reason for rejoicing for us in Achonry that a priest of Father Paul’s calibre and extensive experience in pastoral ministry in his native diocese of Kildare and Leighlin comes to us as our new bishop. We assure him of our prayers as he prepares for his new role and we ask God to bless him with joy, contentment and peace in his ministry among us.” Speaking to the congregation of almost 800, gathered in the cathedral for the announcement, Father Dempsey said, “I’m sure you can understand how daunting it is to take on the role of bishop in a new diocese. I’m conscious of my own unworthiness and sinfulness as I take on this role. I ask you to be patient with me as I endeavour to get to know the priests, people, deacons and religious of the diocese in the coming weeks and months.” The Episcopal Ordination of the new Bishop of Achonry will take place on 19 April 2020, Divine Mercy Sunday.

This invitation is not only for the priests or religious or even bishops here – it is for each and every one of us.” These were the words of Bishop Michael Duignan in his first address as Bishop of Clonfert to those gathered for his Episcopal Ordination in Saint Brendan’s Cathedral in Loughrea, Co Galway on Sunday 13 October. He continued, “Clonfert is a diocese with a rich spiritual tradition dating back to Saint Brendan the Navigator and that great era of the early Irish saints. I would like to thank the people, priests and religious of the Diocese of Clonfert for the warm welcome I have received since the announcement of my appointment some months ago. In March 2016 The National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland (NBSCCCI) produced ”Safeguarding Children Policy and Standards for the Catholic Church in Ireland” which contains a policy statement and a framework of seven child safeguarding standards and indicators which support its implementation and applies to all church personnel. On behalf of our respective dioceses, as part of the Catholic Church in Ireland, we have committed to safeguarding children by agreeing to follow this policy of the NBSCCCI and will abide by and uphold the seven standards and applicable indicators in our entire ministry and contact with children. The policy and standards of the NBSCCCI provide the framework for practice, through a one-Church approach to child safeguarding, ensuring that the same principles, procedures and practices for safeguarding children and for responding to allegations or suspicions of child abuse operate at every level and in every place throughout the Catholic Church in Ireland.

    Issue 57 November 2019 Archbishop Eamon Martin launches Ireland’s most popular Advent Calendar Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh has launched the 2019 online Advent Calendar, which will go live on www.catholicbishops.ie on the first Sunday of Advent, 1 December next. Now in its sixth year, the popular online Advent Calendar offers resources for the parish, school and home which can be accessed behind a virtual door each day during the season of Advent. The content is aimed at assisting people to pray and to reflect on how best we can keep Christ at the centre of our Christmas preparations during this special liturgical season. The unique interactive Advent Calendar has family prayers and suggestions for #LivingAdvent - acts of kindness or charity that all of us are encouraged to undertake during the month of December. The calendar also shares tips on how families can care for creation, our common home, by having a more sustainable Christmas. Welcoming the calendar Archbishop Eamon said, “I invite everyone during this Season of Advent to enjoy our online calendar. It is there for people not just to reflect on the content personally but to share on social media.
