During the week beginning Sunday, 30th July 2017 and concluding the following Sunday, 6th August, the Parish of Kilmoe Union and the little village of Crookhaven, Co. • The Implications of Church Policy for Catholic
The transfer of pupils from primary to post-primary schools: the implications of Church policy for Catholic education in Newry and the surrounding area Introduction I visit the post-primary schools of the diocese each spring. Over the past ten years I have developed a great respect for the quality of teaching, learning and pastoral care in these schools, as well as for the work that is done to develop the faith of pupils. As chair of CCMS I have also been involved in the debate on the Review of Public Administration, particularly the setting up of the Education and Skills Authority (ESA) and on the transfer of pupils from primary to post-primary school. The Northern Ireland Commission on Catholic Education (NICCE)1 published its policy on transfer from primary to post-primary school on 30th March 2009.2 The first point in the NICCE policy is that ‘the current system of academic selection at age eleven is no longer an appropriate way for children to transfer to Post-Primary school’: Therefore it is our view as Trustees that all schools in the Catholic sector should move to an alternative form of transfer as soon as possible and by no later than 2012, in time for the full implementation of the Entitlement Framework in 2013 (n. 1). The decision to move away from academic selection as the basis for transfer of pupils from primary to post-primary schools constitutes a major challenge to all involved in Catholic education.3 As Bishop of Dromore I 1 The Northern Ireland Commission for Catholic Education (NICCE) was set up in 2005 to co-ordinate the work of all Catholic School Trustees in NI.

  • Pope Francis Accepts Resignation of Bishop John Mcareavey
Pope Francis accepts resignation of Bishop John McAreavey 1 1 Bishop John McAreavey March 26 2018 Email Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop John McAreavey as Bishop of Dromore amid concerns around his handling of a clerical child abuse scandal. Dr McAreavey announced his decision to step down earlier this month, amid mounting pressure around his handling of paedophile priest Fr Malachy Finnegan. At the time of his resignation Bishop McAreavey wrote to parishioners saying the decision to resign had been made "with a heavy heart". Bishop John McAreavey sends resignation letter to Pope Francis Bishop Philip Boyce, the bishop emeritus of Raphoe, has been appointed as the Apostolic Administrator of Dromore - a position that puts him temporarily in charge of the diocese. Allegations against Fr Finnegan came to light following a BBC Spotlight programme broadcast in February, which also looked at the response of the church. Bishop McAreavey had known about allegations of child abuse against the disgraced cleric as far back as the mid- 1990s, and conducted Fr Finnegan's funeral in 2002. Responding to his resignation Archbishop Eamon Martin, the head of the Catholic church in Ireland, said: "During this Holy Week my prayers are with the people, religious and clergy of Dromore and in particular with those who have been abused, and with all who are suffering because of abuse. "I wish to acknowledge Bishop McAreavey’s nineteen years of service as a bishop. As president of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference, I thank him for his generous contribution in a wide variety of roles as a member of the Bishops’ Conference during that time.

  • Dear Parishioners, Brother Priests and Deacons, Religious and Friends
Dear Parishioners, brother Priests and Deacons, Religious and Friends, Covid-19: A Year On This week we mark the first anniversary of the appearance of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ireland. As we consider how this has touched our parish communities, particularly given the tragic loss of so many lives, we wish to share some thoughts with you, the people of the six Dioceses of the Tuam Province. Further to Climb Many of us will be familiar with the experience of arriving at what we thought was the top of a mountain only to discover that there is still further to climb. Sometimes the last bit can be the hardest of all. We understand the experience of disappointment and frustration that many people feel, at the news of an indefinite extension of lockdown. We are delighted, however, that children have the opportunity to return to school and we wish them and their teachers every blessing. Until we are all “OK” All of us appreciate the efforts and the sacrifices of those in our community who provide essential services. For many people, however, the continued high level of restriction poses practical and emotional challenges. We want to say very clearly that, in the Christian vision of things, every person is essential and no person is more important or necessary than any other. When we pray the Stations of the Cross, we celebrate people like Veronica, who wiped the face of Jesus and Simon of Cyrene who shared with Him the burden of the cross. None of us can say “I’m ok” until we are all “ok”.
