NOTICE FROM BISHOP JOHN McAREAVEY Across the Diocese of Dromore, people will be aware of a reduction in the number of priests available to serve in the parishes of the Diocese. In 2005 there were 41 priests serving in parishes; today there are 23 diocesan priests, supported by 3 Polish priests and 3 Permanent Deacons. It is now essential to review the allocation of the priests in the parishes of the Diocese. Beginning in September, a process of consultation will be carried out, involving clergy and parishioners. You will be kept informed about this process, as it evolves. +John McAreavey

Please come and join us in our Jesus Divine Mercy Devotions, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Benediction followed by the Blessing of St Faustina’s Relic today Sunday 14th August at 3pm in Mayobridge Church.

Saint Faustina was born Helen Kowalska on 25th August 1905 in the village of Glogowiec near Lodz, Poland, as the third of ten children. From her childhood she was distinguished by a love of prayer, diligence at work, obedience and sensitivity for the poor. At the age of twenty she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in which she spent thirteen years of her life as a quiet, humble and hard-working sister. Her life as a religious was marked with the stigma of suffering, but also with extraordinary mystical graces, especially that of frequently conversing with Our Lord about His Mercy. Worn out and weakened by tuberculosis and the sufferings she bore in sacrifice for sinners, Saint Faustina died in the odour of sanctity, (a sweet odour reputedly emitted by the bodies of saints at or near death), in Krakow on October 5th 1938, at the age of 33. Pope John Paul 11 declared her a Saint on 20th April 2000. She was canonised as the ‘first saint of the new millennium’.

YEAR OF MERCY PRAYER - Lord, you have taught us to be merciful like our Father in Heaven is merciful. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy may we follow the example of God our Father who asks us not to judge or condemn but to show love and be forgiving. Help us to be more forgiving and merciful to others. Send your Holy Spirit to bless us in a special way during this Jubilee Year of Mercy. May it be a year of grace for our families, our Parish and your Church throughout the world. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, Amen

Lough Derg 2016

Lough Derg, the sacred Sanctuary of St Patrick, is very much a living part of Irish Christian Heritage. A unique island, rich in prayer and faith, an island which has been calling pilgrims for over a thousand years, an island which St Patrick himself was called to. For many people Lough Derg provides an opportunity to step back from their lives, to take stock and examine the direction which their lives are taking. For many others it is a time to come closer to God through prayer and reflection. Lough Derg is an island of pilgrimage set in calm lake waters, offers no distraction, no artificialities or interruptions. Instead you are warmly welcomed and cared for: there are no strangers here. The island, made holy by the prayers of millions of pilgrims over the centuries, continues to provide a safe haven for rest, reflection and renewal to all who wish to ‘Come away to a quiet place and rest a while’, Mark 6:31

If you wish to find out more or if you wish to organise a group to come to the island for a One Day Retreat or a Group Tour we will be delighted to help you.

“The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World”

http://www.worldmeeting2018.ie/

The date and the official title of the 9th World Meeting of Families were announced on 24 May 2016. Pope Francis has decided that the World Meeting of Families will be held in Dublin on 22 to 26 August 2018, with the theme “The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World”. The announcement of the date and theme for the 9th World Meeting of Families (WMOF2018) was made at a press conference in the Vatican this morning, attended by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin, and the head of the Pontifical Council for the Family, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia. The Archdiocese of Dublin is the host diocese for this event which takes place once every three years in different parts of the world. Addressing today’s press conference Archbishop Martin said, “The 2018 World Meeting will be held in Dublin, but it is an event of the entire Church.” Archbishop Martin said it was significant that Pope Francis chose the family as the theme of the first Synod of Bishops of his Pontificate and that he launched a new methodology for the Synod which would involve consultation with families. “Hopefully the World Meeting will be an important milestone in the application of the fruits of the Synodal process and of Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia”, he said. The Dublin Meeting will be prepared for by a process of catechesis – based on Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love) which was published last month – and this will take place right across the Church in Ireland during 2017 and 2018. It is hoped that something of that catechetical process will be shared with other Churches around the world, especially in Europe. Archbishop Martin said the Dublin World Meeting of Families, more than earlier Meetings, should be a world event even in its preparation. “The World Meeting of Families in Dublin will hopefully be a festival of witness to the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ. The vocation of Christian couples, supported by the Sacrament of Marriage, is a call to witness to that love and to experience the joy of bringing the love of Jesus to those who are troubled and challenged,” said Archbishop Martin.

It is too early to know if Pope Francis will attend the World Meeting of Families in 2018. His programme is normally announced just a few months prior to any event. The Pope has expressed his desire to attend, and such a visit of the Pope would bring great joy to Irish Catholics and others. But the final decision will depend on many factors.

Given the age of Pope Francis, a possible visit of the Pope in 2018 would inevitably have a more restricted programme than that of the Papal Visit of Pope Saint John Paul II in 1979.
