Gamble's request that I would write this Foreword are (1) that I was a very unworthy successor of \Villiam Bedell, the greatest, most saintly and learned of the long line of Bishops of Kilmore; (2) that I have, I think, read all the lives of Bedell which have been published; and (3) that his example was the greatest inspiration in my work in the diocese for which he laboured so heroically, and where his influence abides. How remarkably the example he set of what a Bishop's life and work should be has been an inspiration to his successors may be illustrated by the reverence in which Alfred George Elliott, Bishop of Kilmore from 1897- 1913, held the memory of \Villiam Bedell. He paid his great predecessor a tribute which was deeper than hero worship. Symbolic of this reverence and admiration was his determination to be buried as Pear tu the grave of \Vi!liam Bedell as authority would permit. The life of Bishop Elliott is another tale worth telling by a competent historian. I am glad that Dr. Gamble's Life of \Villiam Bedell is to be published, and I trust that it will bring inspir ation to many readers. -

Christ Church Link November 2014 l New series Number 31 l 50p where sold Bounding around the foundry We find the foundry fascinating, and see our bells in progress On Thursday 9 October, a party of 25 of us from Christ Church enjoyed a tour of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. We saw how bells are cast (in moulds made of clay, sand, goat hair and horse dung!) and tuned (by having metal shaved out of them on a big turntable). Our new bells are arriving on Monday 8 December, and will be dedicated on Sunday 21 December by Bishop Peter Hancock, who will be presiding on that day instead of our patronal festival on 23 November as originally scheduled. Both this and the meeting with our World-Wide President Lynn Temby at Monkton Combe School on 22nd, are very important events in the MU Calendar, so we thank everyone for their attendance and interest. -

Intermarriage and Other Families This page shows the interconnection between the Townsend/Townshend family and some of the thirty-five families with whom there were several marriages between 1700 and 1900. It also gives a brief historical background about those families. Names shown in italics indicate that the family shown is connected with the Townsend/Townshend elsewhere. Baldwin The Baldwin family in Co Cork traces its origins to William Baldwin who was a ranger in the royal forests in Shropshire. He married Elinor, daughter of Sir Edward Herbert of Powys and went to Ireland in the late 16th century. His two sons settled in the Bandon area; the eldest brother, Walter, acquired land at Curravordy (Mount Pleasant) and Garrancoonig (Mossgrove) and the youngest, Thomas, purchased land at Lisnagat (Lissarda) adjacent to Curravordy. Walter’s son, also called Walter, was a Cromwellian soldier and it is through his son Herbert that the Baldwin family in Co Cork derives. He himself will be peace.” (Mi 5:3-4) On 24 September, in her home in Rostrevor, Mrs Josephine Nolan, the mother of Fr Mark-Eph- rem, passed away peacefully at the age of 88. Since the end of July, the state of her health had been slowly deteriorating. The first secular oblate of our Monastery (under the name of Sr Benedict), a wo- man of faith and prayer, she was loyal in her support and friendship for our community. On 27 September, we held her funeral in a crowded church, in the presence of our Bishop John McAreavey, Bishop Raymond Field, the Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin, the deans of the Anglican cathed- rals of Downpatrick and Armagh, and many friends of all denominations. Mrs Nolan is henceforth re- posing beside her husband Ian, in our Monastery’s cemetery. At a time when Dr Rowan Williams has recently resigned as Archbishop of Canterbury, we in- vite you to reflect on a sermon he delivered on 25 December 2004 in Canterbury cathedral. It used to be said that if you were travelling by ocean liner, the worst thing you could do was to visit the engine room; and I’m afraid it’s a point people make to discourage you from visiting the Vatican or Church House, or even Lambeth Palace.. -

Issue 58 January 2020 Fr Paul Dempsey appointed Bishop of Achonry Diocese Pope Francis appointed Father Paul Dempsey, PP of Newbridge Parish in the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin, as Bishop of the Diocese of Achonry on 27 January. Speaking in the Cathedral of the Annunciation and Saint Nathy, following the announcement, Father Dermot Meehan, Administrator of Achonry Diocese said, “Today, Father Paul Dempsey comes into our assembly as Christ’s messenger, having accepted his appointment by Pope Francis as pastor of the people and priests of Achonry. We warmly welcome his appointment and, on behalf of the priests, religious and people of the diocese, I thank him for accepting it. It is a reason for rejoicing for us in Achonry that a priest of Father Paul’s calibre and extensive experience in pastoral ministry in his native diocese of Kildare and Leighlin comes to us as our new bishop. We assure him of our prayers as he prepares for his new role and we ask God to bless him with joy, contentment and peace in his ministry among us.” Speaking to the congregation of almost 800, gathered in the cathedral for the announcement, Father Dempsey said, “I’m sure you can understand how daunting it is to take on the role of bishop in a new diocese. I’m conscious of my own unworthiness and sinfulness as I take on this role. I ask you to be patient with me as I endeavour to get to know the priests, people, deacons and religious of the diocese in the coming weeks and months.” The Episcopal Ordination of the new Bishop of Achonry will take place on 19 April 2020, Divine Mercy Sunday. -

The Wesleyan Enlightenment: Closing the gap between heart religion and reason in Eighteenth Century England by Timothy Wayne Holgerson B.M.E., Oral Roberts University, 1984 M.M.E., Wichita State University, 1986 M.A., Asbury Theological Seminary, 1999 M.A., Kansas State University, 2011 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2017 Abstract John Wesley (1703-1791) was an Anglican priest who became the leader of Wesleyan Methodism, a renewal movement within the Church of England that began in the late 1730s. Although Wesley was not isolated from his enlightened age, historians of the Enlightenment and theologians of John Wesley have only recently begun to consider Wesley in the historical context of the Enlightenment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between a man, John Wesley, and an intellectual movement, the Enlightenment. As a comparative history, this study will analyze the juxtaposition of two historiographies, Wesley studies and Enlightenment studies. Surprisingly, Wesley scholars did not study John Wesley as an important theologian until the mid-1960s. Moreover, because social historians in the 1970s began to explore the unique ways people experienced the Enlightenment in different local, regional and national contexts, the plausibility of an English Enlightenment emerged for the first time in the early 1980s. As a result, in the late 1980s, scholars began to integrate the study of John Wesley and the Enlightenment. In other words, historians and theologians began to consider Wesley as a serious thinker in the context of an English Enlightenment that was not hostile to Christianity. -

chapter 16 The Schottenklöster in the World: Identity, Independence and Integration* Diarmuid Ó Riain Introduction One of the central concerns of the original Enclaves of Learning, Religion, Ideology and Practice working group was to examine the multifaceted connec- tions between the “enclave” and the surrounding world and to illustrate how texts produced within these communities served to both record and reinter- pret this interaction as well as having the potential to change the underlying relationships.1 This approach essentially treats of the physical, legal or other factors underpinning the identification as an enclave of learning, religion, ideol- ogy and practice within the broader context of the institution’s social relations, thereby seeking to redress the potentially problematic semantic implications of the term “enclave”. The focus of my paper will be the so-called Schottenklöster or Irish Benedictine monasteries, which were established between the later 11th and early 13th centuries in modern-day southern Germany and Austria. That the monasteries of medieval Europe were deeply embedded in the wider social environment rather than detached islands goes, of course, almost with- out saying.2 This reality coexisted, however, with what Hallinger called the traditional gegenweltliche instincts of monasticism, and the rhetoric of with- drawal from the world would always remain prominent, particularly in the context of the emergence of new monastic movements.3 What makes the Schottenklöster an especially interesting case-study with regard to the interplay between idealized detachment and actual integration is the issue of ethnicity; the Irish identity of the monasteries was their sine qua non, and, accordingly, had a profound influence on the level of independence and integration they * The research for this article was funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF): F42 Visions of Community. -

DERR THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PHD DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERISTY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH SUPERVISOR OF RESEARCH: DR. THOMAS O’CONNOR NOVEMBER 2013 Abstract This study explores, reconstructs and evaluates the social, political, educational and economic worlds of the Irish Catholic episcopal corps appointed between 1657 and 1829 by creating a prosopographical profile of this episcopal cohort. The central aim of this study is to reconstruct the profile of this episcopate to serve as a context to evaluate the ‘achievements’ of the four episcopal generations that emerged: 1657-1684; 1685- 1766; 1767-1800 and 1801-1829. The first generation of Irish bishops were largely influenced by the complex political and religious situation of Ireland following the Cromwellian wars and Interregnum. This episcopal cohort sought greater engagement with the restored Stuart Court while at the same time solidified their links with continental agencies. With the accession of James II (1685), a new generation of bishops emerged characterised by their loyalty to the Stuart Court and, following his exile and the enactment of new penal legislation, their ability to endure political and economic marginalisation. Through the creation of a prosopographical database, this study has nuanced and reconstructed the historical profile of the Jacobite episcopal corps and has shown that the Irish episcopate under the penal regime was not only relatively well-organised but was well-engaged in reforming the Irish church, albeit with limited resources. By the mid-eighteenth century, the post-Jacobite generation (1767-1800) emerged and were characterised by their re-organisation of the Irish Church, most notably the establishment of a domestic seminary system and the setting up and manning of a national parochial system.
