Dogs allowed. The Schoolhouse in Annaghmore was built in the 1860s to educate local children. Nowadays its cosy vestibule leads through to a light filled sitting room where an open fire adds a welcoming glow to the double height living room. Nearby beaches at Strandhill (20 mins). Sligo town's bustling streets are peppered with small boutiques, cafes and bars, as well as a myriad of craft shops offering many handmade crafts including jewellery, pottery and knitwear. L'école d’Annaghmore fut construite dans les années 1860 pour l’éducation des enfants des environs. Aujourd'hui, son vestibule confortable mène à un salon très lumineux où un feu de cheminée ajoute une lueur chaleureuse à cette pièce à double hauteur. Il y a des plages à proximité à Strandhill (20 mn).

History:

Built in the 1860s, The Schoolhouse, Annaghmore is an attractive rural building picturesquely located by the Owenmore River and surrounded by mature woodland. The building retains many original decorative features including ornamental wooden bargeboards and lattice windows surmounted by wooden hood mouldings. The most striking feature is the projecting oriel window on the upper east gable.The L- shaped one and a half storey building originally comprised of a two-storey accommodation area (the schoolmaster's residence) and a double height schoolroom. Some 19th Century schoolhouse furnishings still survive including the schoolhouse fireplace, coat hooks and chalkboards.

Construite dans les années 1860, l'école d’Annaghmore est un intéressant et pittoresque monument rural situé près de la rivière Owenmore et entouré par un terrain boisé. Le bâtiment a conservé un bon nombre de ses caractéristiques d’origines, notamment ses décorations ornementales en bois sur les lambrequins et fenêtres à croisillons surmontées par des moulures en bois. La caractéristique la plus frappante est la fenêtre en encorbellement du pignon supérieur est. Le bâtiment en forme de L et a demi étage était à l'origine composé d'une zone d'habitation sur deux étages (résidence du maître d'école) et d’une salle de classe sur deux niveau également. Certains meubles de l’école datant du 19ème siècle survivent encore, y compris les portes manteaux et tableaux à la craie.

This charming rural schoolhouse on the Annaghmore Estate which has been owned by the O'Hara family for several centuries, features distinctively Tudor Revival decorative elements.

There is local folklore surrounding the last tenant of the schoolhouse. Hughie Savage was a bachelor who farmed on the other side of the Owenmore river and kept cattle in the mountains. He lived at Annaghmore without electricity or running water and did not have a bank account. He kept all his money in a tin box which legend says is still buried somewhere at Annaghmore since it has never been found!

Restoration

Constructed of a mixture of cut stone, rubble and blond brick rendered with lime plaster, the schoolhouse had not been used since the death of the last tenant in 1998 and was consequently in very poor condition when the Trust began the conservation of the property.The lead up to the restoration began when Annaghmore was first identified as 'at risk' building during a Cross Border Restoration Survey which the Trust undertook in 1998.
