Wellington Cemetery Update Feb 2005

This update was started in the fall of 2004 and after many delays was completed in Feb 2005. We used the original records and a walk through of the cemetery to complete the information.

Larimer Count Genealogical Society and the researchers on this project do not guarantee the complete accuracy of all information. As with most indexes the writing on the original records was difficult to read, some records just not available and some wooden markers were destroyed by a grass fire and many graves with no markers at all.

Small Cemeteries of Larimer County, Colorado Cemeteries and Memorials Located as of January 2005 Compiled by Duane V. And Susan B. Kniebes

The following list of cemeteries and memorials contains the results to date of a joint project of the US Geologic Survey and the Colorado Council of Genealogical Societies. The goal of the project is to pinpoint the location of all cemeteries and individual burials in Colorado. Each location is to be determined by GPS (Global Positioning System) to the nearest second of Latitude and longitude. This establishes a location to about a hundred feet. A name for the site is also important because the information generated by the project will be placed in the GNIS (Geographical Names Information System) data base of the USGS. Sites listed as cemeteries have more than one burial. Single graves are noted as “grave of”

Individuals volunteer to work on each county, with Pat Kemper coordinating the effort. This list is a report by my wife and myself, who volunteered to document Larimer County. The book containing our original data include photographs of the sites, maps showing locations, and historical information about many of the sites.

Most grave sites, except where noted, have some type of marking. The marking may be one or more inscribed headstone but often are only rocks at the head and foot of the grave or, in two cases, an old post or a couple of partial poles with nails showing there once was a wooden cross at the site.

Indian burials are often distinguished by a mound covered with rocks.

Most of the sites are on private property and are not to be visited without permission of the property owner. Owners are listed in one of the columns. We would be happy to help get permission for you if you wish to make a visit.
