The first day, hike to the lakes, set up camp in a designated site and explore, fish or just enjoy the scenery. On the second day, get up early and begin climbing to finish the hike before the aftenoon thunderstorms. ACCESS: Procees south on Hwy 133 for 1.4 miles to Prince Creek Road and take a left. The trailhead is approximately 8 miles up the road and just before the Dinkle Lake at the Thomas Lake Trailhead. The first three miles to Thomas Lakes is easy. NARRATIVE: The easiest route is up the east ridge. From the upper lake, walk to the base of the steep slope to the southeast of the lake. Ascend this slope on the new hiking trail to the ridge, and continue across the high, sparsely timbered slope to the southern ridge. Follow this ridge up the mountain. You will come upon one stretch of fairy steep, loose rock but should have no problem if you use care. Soon you will be on the main ridge to the summit. Enjoy your view! You may want to cross one half mile saddle to West Sopris, which is the same elevation as East Sopris, and offers a superb view of the Crystal River Valley and Avalanche Creek. -

This report provides an assessment and compilation of recreation-related monitoring data sources across the National Wilderness Preservation System (NWPS). Telephone interviews with managers of all units of the NWPS and a literature search were conducted to locate studies that provide campsite impact data, trail impact data, and information about visitor characteristics. Of the 628 wildernesses that comprised the NWPS in January 2000, 51 percent had baseline campsite data, 9 percent had trail condition data and 24 percent had data on visitor characteristics. Wildernesses managed by the Forest Service and National Park Service were much more likely to have data than wildernesses managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Fish and Wildlife Service. Both unpublished data collected by the management agencies and data published in reports are included. Extensive appendices provide detailed information about available data for every study that we located. These have been organized by wilderness so that it is easy to locate all the information available for each wilderness in the NWPS. Itinerary Overview Colorado Winter Expedition for Veterans - 6 Days Your course begins at the Leadville Mountain Center where we start with a basic introduction to backcountry travel. Then you will journey with your fellow veterans into the high-country wilderness, where the real magic takes place. You do not need to have any previous backcountry, winter, or snowshoeing experience. We teach you everything you need to know to travel in the backcountry—how to pack appropriately, set up camp in the winter, how to navigate avalanche terrain and evaluate snow conditions. Winter in the Colorado Rockies is unlike anywhere else in the U.S. The high altitude means it is common to hike above tree line, with sweeping views of snow-clad mountains surrounding you. There’s a good reason many local adventurers say winter is their favorite season. Many veterans who choose this special environment for their Outward Bound expedition say that their experience gives them a new, valuable, and unexpected perspective. Travel in this winter environment can be as demanding as it is rewarding. It can take every waking moment to get from point A to point B and will draw upon many of the leadership and teamwork skills you’ve learned from your time in the service. From getting up early to pack your bags and cook breakfast, to snowshoeing with a loaded pack, to climbing peaks that rise well over 12,000 feet, traveling in the winter wilderness can be difficult. Instructors and past participants agree that arriving physically fit will enhance everyone’s experience and ability to do well on the course and ultimately allow you to take full advantage of the expedition. -

Currently, the assimilation of point-scale snow sensor data into these models is commonly performed without consideration of the spatial representativeness of the point data with respect to the model grid-scale SWE. To improve the understanding of the relationship between point-scale snow measurements and surrounding areas, we characterized the spatial distribution of snow depth and SWE within 1-, 4- and 16-km2 grids surrounding 15 snow stations (snowpack telemetry and California snow sensors) in California, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon during the 2008 and 2009 snow seasons. More than 30 000 field observations of snowpack properties were used with binary regression tree models to relate SWE at the sensor site to the surrounding area SWE to evaluate the sensor representativeness of larger-scale conditions. -

LIZARD HEAD WILDERNESS Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests San Juan National Forest The following acts are prohibited on National Forest System lands within the Lizard Head Wilderness on the Norwood Ranger District of the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests and on the Mancos - Dolores Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest 1. Entering or being in the restricted area with more than 15 people per group, with a maximum combination of people and stock not to exceed 25 per group. 36 CFR 261.58(f) 2. Building, maintaining or using a fire, campfire, or wood-burning stove fire: a) Within one hundred (100) feet of any lake, stream or National Forest System Trail. b) Above tree line. c) Within Navajo Basin of the restricted area (as depicted on Exhibit A; and at T.41N.,R.10W NMPM, portions of Sections 4,5,6; T.41N,R.11W NMPM, a portion of Section 1; and T42N R10W NMPM, portions of Section 31, 32, 33.). 36 CFR 261.52(a) 3.
